Graphical Approaches for Planning ExperimentsHigh Resolution Linear Graphs for ThreeLevel Designs
Lee, Sang-Heon Military Operations Research Society of Korea 2003 한국국방경영분석학회지 Vol.29 No.2
The lack of consideration for statistical properties in Taguchi's threelevel linear graphs is rectified. We propose a new set of linear graphs for the threelevel orthogonal arrays according to the maximum resolution criterion. In the presence of twofactor interactions however, the serious bias of all the estimated effects as well as the estimated variance shows that these designs should not be employed. The various alternative designs are discussed.

The first ever demonstration of a cable‐type lithium ion battery architecture with outstanding omni‐directional flexibility is described by Je Young Kim, Heon‐Cheol Shin, and co‐workers on page 5192. The Front Cover image illustrates the unique battery architecture comprising a skeleton frame surrounding an empty space, that is, a hollow‐spiral anode with a multi‐helical structure. This design enables the battery to reliably power an LED screen or an MP3 player even under severe mechanical twisting and bending.

The technological effects of Makgeolli lees fiber (0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, and 4.0%) on chicken salt-soluble breast meat proteins in a model system on proximate composition, physicochemical properties, and textural properties were investigated. Makgeolli lees fiber was obtained from Makgeolli brew processing, and the by-products showed good dietary fiber. The moisture and ash contents, water holding capacity, redness, yellowness, hardness, and apparent viscosity of chicken salt-soluble meat protein heat-induced gel systems with Makgeolli lees fiber were all higher than the control without Makgeolli lees fiber. However, protein solubility and electrophoretic patterns did not differ among the control and treatments with Makgeolli lees fiber samples. The chicken salt-soluble protein heat-induced gel systems incorporating Makgeolli lees fiber had improved water holding capacity, textural properties, and viscosity due to Makgeolli lees fiber addition. These results suggest that the addition of 4.0% Makgeolli lees fiber to gel is helpful to improve the physical properties of heat-induced gels.

Multicriteria Optimization of Spindle Units
Sang Heon Lim,Choon Man Lee,Igor Aexeevich Zverev 한국정밀공학회 2006 International Journal of Precision Engineering and Vol.7 No.4
The quality of precision spindle units (S/Us) running on rolling bearings depends strongly on their structural parameters, such as the configuration and geometry of the S/U elements and bearing preloads. When S/Us are designed, their parameters should be optimized to improve the performance characteristics. However, it is practically impossible to state perfectly a general criterion function for S/U quality. Therefore, we propose to use a multicriteria optimization based on the parameter space investigation (PSI) method. We demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method using the optimization results of high-speed S/Us.
Effect of Metal Oxide on the Superconductivity of YBCO

Electromagnetic properties of doped and undoped YBaCuO superconductors were evaluated to investigate the effect of pinning center on the magnetization and magnetic shielding. The variation with doping was maximum for 3% doping and decrease with further doping. The magnetic shielding was evaluated by measuring the induced voltage in secondary coil and the voltage initially set to 0.5V, decreased to 0.17V and 0.28V respectively for the undoped and 3% doped sample. The much less change in the induced voltage for the 3% doped sample is attributed to the increased flux shielding by shielding vortex current. The was converted to fine particles which were trapped in YBaCuO superconductor during the reaction sintering. The trapped fine particles, may be acted as a flux pinning center.

The aim of this work was to determine the method and predict the optimum conditions for egg quality stored for 7 days when combination treatments of irradiation and chitosan coating were applied using response surface methodology (RSM). A central composite design was chosen for the RSM in this study and the factors were irradiation dose (0~2 kGy) and concentration of chitosan coating material (0~2%). Performance of the irradiation and chitosan coating were evaluated by analyzing the egg quality and functional property factors. The predicted maximum level of Haugh units and foaming ability calculated by a developed model were 74.19 at 0 kGy of irradiation with coating by 0.96% chitosan solution and 50.83 mm at 2.0 kGy with 1.01%, respectively. The predicted minimum value of foam stability and 2-thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) value were 2.97 mm at 0.39 kGy with 0.21% and 0.54 mg malonaldehyde/kg egg yolk at 0 kGy with 0.90% of chitosan solution, respectively. Results clearly showed that gamma irradiation negatively affected the Haugh unit and TBARS but positively affected the foaming capacity. The estimated value from the developed model by RSM was verified by no statistical difference with observed value. Therefore, RSM can be a good tool for optimization and prediction of egg quality when 2 or more treatments are combined. However, one should decide the target quality first to achieve a successful implementation of this technology.
Electromagnetic Properties of Bi System Superconductor for Neutron Irradiation

Effects of doping on the electromagnetic properties in the BiSrCaCuO superconductors. The electromagnetic properties of doped and undoped BiSrCaCuO superconductor were evaluated to investigate the contribution of the pinning centers to the magnetic effect. It was confirmed experimentally that a large amount of magnetic flux was trapped in the doped sample than that in the undoped one, indicating that the pinning centers of magnetic flux are related closely to the occurrence of the magnetic effect. It is considered that the area where normal conduction takes place increases by adding and the magnetic flux penetrating through the sample increases. The results suggested that Ag acts to increase pinning centers of magnetic flux, contributing to the occurrence of the electromagnetic properties.
