Cell Cycle Regulation and Induction of Apoptosis by β-carotene in U937 and HL-60 Leukemia Cells
Upadhyaya, K.R.,Radha, K.S.,Madhyastha, H.K. Korean Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biol 2007 Journal of biochemistry and molecular biology Vol.40 No.6
In this communication, we report the efficacy of $\beta$-carotene towards differentiation and apoptosis of leukemia cells. Dose ($20{\mu}M$) and time dependence (12 h) tests of $\beta$-carotene showed a higher magnitude of decrease (significance p < 0.05) in cell numbers and cell viability in HL-60 cells than U937 cells but not normal cell like Peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC). Microscopical observation of $\beta$-carotene treated cells showed a distinct pattern of morphological abnormalities with inclusion of apoptotic bodies in both leukemia cell lines. When cells were treated with $20{\mu}M$ of $\beta$-carotene, total genomic DNA showed a fragmentation pattern and this pattern was clear in HL-60 than U937 cells. Both the cell lines, on treatment with $\beta$-carotene, showed a clear shift in $G_1$ phase of the cell cycle. In addition the study also revealed anti-oxidant properties of $\beta$-carotene since there was reduction in relative fluorescent when treated than the control at lower concentration. Collectively this study shows the dual phenomenon of apoptosis and differentiation of leukemia cells on treatment with $\beta$-carotene.

A simple efficient and neat synthesis of α-hydroxy phosphonates has been accomplished from aromatic/heterocyclic aldehydes and diethyl phosphite using KHSO_4 as a catalyst under solvent-free conditions at ambient temperature. These compounds are characterized by spectral and analytical data and tested for their anti-oxidant activity.
A Generalized Markovian Based Framework for Dynamic Spectrum Access in Cognitive Radios
( K. Muthumeenakshi ),( S. Radha ) 한국인터넷정보학회 2014 KSII Transactions on Internet and Information Syst Vol.8 No.5
Radio spectrum is a precious resource and characterized by fixed allocation policy. However, a large portion of the allocated radio spectrum is underutilized. Conversely, the rapid development of ubiquitous wireless technologies increases the demand for radio spectrum. Cognitive Radio (CR) methodologies have been introduced as a promising approach in detecting the white spaces, allowing the unlicensed users to use the licensed spectrum thus realizing Dynamic Spectrum Access (DSA) in an effective manner. This paper proposes a generalized framework for DSA between the licensed (primary) and unlicensed (secondary) users based on Continuous Time Markov Chain (CTMC) model. We present a spectrum access scheme in the presence of sensing errors based on CTMC which aims to attain optimum spectrum access probabilities for the secondary users. The primary user occupancy is identified by spectrum sensing algorithms and the sensing errors are captured in the form of false alarm and mis-detection. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed spectrum access scheme in terms of the throughput attained by the secondary users, throughput optimization using optimum access probabilities, probability of interference with increasing number of secondary users. The efficacy of the algorithm is analyzed for both imperfect spectrum sensing and perfect spectrum sensing.

The hydrodynamic characteristic performance of an internal draft tube inverse fluidized bed biofilm reactorwas studied for the aerobic biodegradation of phenol (1,200 mg/l) using Pseudomonas fluorescens for various ratiosof settled bed volume to reactor working volume (Vb/Vr) under batchwise condition with respect to liquid phase. Theoperating parameters, such as superficial gas velocity, phase hold ups, aspect ratio and bed height, were analyzed fordifferent ratios of (Vb/Vr). The effect of biodegradation on synthetic phenolic effluent was determined from the reductionin chemical oxygen demand and phenol removal efficiency. The optimum value of (Vb/Vr)m was 0.20 for the optimalsuperficial gas velocity, Ugm=0.220 m/s with the COD reduction efficiency of 98.5% in 48 hours. The biomass andbiofilm characteristics of P. fluorescens were determined for optimal hydrodynamic operating parameters by evaluatingits biofilm dry density and thickness, bioparticle density, suspended and attached biomass concentration.
Hazardous propagation of noise in a surface mine industry: An Occupational Health study
( Dayal Dev S ),( Vignesh K. S ),( Radha Krishnan R ) 한국감성과학회 2023 한국감성과학회 국제학술대회(ICES) Vol.2023 No.-
Noise risk assessment is an essential component of occupational hazard management in workplace safety, whether it is underground or open pit mining, workers are exposed to loud noise during work such as heavy machine drilling, blasting, trucks are some loud noise emitters. Globally, occupational noise is responsible for approximately 16% of the disabling hearing loss in adults, equivalent to over 4 million Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs), in India prevalence rate of Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) is 12.8% among mine employees in various environments. Main parameter was to measure the exposure level of noise using dosimeter in various operating conditions. Findings of our study states the noise exposed around various working environments 86.6 dB(A) near rock breaker and 92.9 dB(A) near Xcentric ripper which is higher than the Recommended Exposure Limit (REL) recommended by National Institute of Occupational Study and Health (NIOSH) and Directorate General of Mines Safety (DGMS). Employees exposed to noise more than PEL for a prolonged period of time have higher risk of Tinnitus, NIHL and other hearing ailments. Usage of hearing protectors for employees should be made compulsory and breaks between working hours need to be improvised by the employers according to the standards prescribed.

The grape is one of the most valued conventional fruits, worldwide. Although most of the parts of the grapevine are useful, primarily, the grape is considered as a source of unique natural products not only for the development of valuable medicines against a number of diseases, but also for manufacturing various industrial products. Over the last few decades, apart from the chemistry of grape compounds, considerable progress has been made towards exploring the biological activities of various grape-derived constituents. Today, it is well established that in addition to serving as food, the grape is a major source of several phytochemicals. The main biologically active and well-characterized constituent from the grape is resveratrol, which is known for various medicinal properties in human diseases. This review discusses the roles of various grape-derived phytochemicals in relation to various diseases.
