We investigated toluene exposure level, urinary hippuric acid concentration, subjective symptoms and genotype of ALDH2 DNA in 134 exposed workers and 53 nonexposed workers for evaluating the effect of ALDH2 polymorphism on toluene metabolism and urinary hippuric acid concentration as biological exposure indices(BEI) of toluene. The results were as follows; 1. The percentage of inactive genotype of ALDH2 in exposed workers was lower than that of exposed(P=0.081). 2. The percentages of exposed workers with inactive genotype did not have any significant difference by the increase of toluene exposure level or work duration. 3. The frequency of drinking, monthly and maximum amount of alcohol intake in workers with normal genotype were significantly higher, than those with inactive genotype. 4. The urinary hippuric acid concentration of nonexposed workers with inactive genotype was significantly lower than that with normal genotype. Under 100 ppm of toluene, similar but statistically insignificant trends were found, while above that concentration of toluene, reverse but statistically insignificant trends were found. 5. The number of acute and chronic subjective symptoms were increased positively with the concentration of toluene in workers with normal genotype, but no such trends were found in workers with inactive genotype. 6. The result of simple linear regression between toluene and urinary hippuric acid concentration showed a very significant positive linear relation-ship. The mean hippuric acid concentration of nonoccupational exposure was 0.289±0.227(0.062-0.516)g/l. Toluene exposure level unable to discriminate with nonoccupational exposure estimated from regression equation, it range from 7.29 to 9.87 ppm. Considering above all things, it was useful to estimate the exposure level of toluene by means of analysing urinary hippuric acid concentration in both genotype workers, but the biological exposure indices(BEI) of both genotypes were different from each other. The BEI of the total exposed workers was 2.76g/l, which was lower than current criteria 3.0g/l (2.5 g/g Cr), and it also suggest that the BEI for the exposed workers in our country be lowered to the appropriate level after further study.

Bile duct hamartomas are rare benign malformations of the biliary tract. It is usually discovered as occasional findings at autopsy. It may be confused with metastatic lesions of the liver or may rarely be found in association with cholangiocarcinoma. We report a case of 64-year-old woman who showed multiple small low attenuated lesions in both lobes of the liver on CT scan. Clinically, it was hard to differentiate them from metastatic lesions in the liver. Multiple bile duct hamartomas were histologically confirmed with liver needle biopsy. We report this case with a review of literature. (Korean J Gastroenterol 2001;38:385-388)

정권 교체기나 경축일 기념으로 수백만명의 교통사범을 3-4년 주기로 특별사면, 감형, 등을 단행해온 정부에 대해 사회 일각에서는 사면을 정치적으로 이용하여 교통사범의 규범력을 약화시키고 법적 형평성과 안정성을 해치고 있다는 비판마저 제기한다. 게다가 ‘교통법규는 지키는 사람만 손해’라는 식의 인식이 확산되면서 또다른 감면조치를 기대하는 등 법질서의 존엄성 훼손과 더불어 범칙금이나 과태료 등을 내지 않고 미루는 도덕적 해이 현상 등이 건전한 교통문화 확립을 저해하므로 사면조치의 개선이 필요하다. 교통문화의 향상을 위해서는 국민의 자발적인 자질향상 노력이 바람직하지만, 교통문화의 수준향상에 걸림돌이 되고 있는 교통사범에 대해 강경책과 회유책을 수반한 현실적인 계도정책 등이 절실하다. 교통문화의 규범화 정책의 확립을 위해서는 교통사범에 대한 처벌 및 감면정책 관련 법제도의 정비가 우선적으로 이루어져야 할 것이다.

The structures of reinforced concrete has been extensively increased with rapid development of industrial society. Futhermore, these reinforced concretes are easy to expose to severe corrosive environments such as sea water, contaminated water, acid rain and seashore etc.. Thus, corrosion problem of inner steel bar embedded in concrete is very important in terms of safety and economical point of view. In this study, multiple mortar test specimen(W/C:0.4) with six types having different cover thickness each other was prepared and was immerged in seawater solution for five years to evaluate the effect of cover thickness and immersion years to corrosion property of embedded steel bar. And the polarization characteristics of these embedded steel bars was investigated using electrochemical methods such as measuring corrosion potential, cathodic polarization curve, and cyclic voltammogram. At the beginning of immersion, the corrosion potentials exhibited increasingly nobler values with increasing cover thickness. However, after immersed for 5 years, the thicker cover of thickness, the corrosion potentials shifted in the negative direction, and the relationship between corrosion potential and cover thickness was not in good agreement with each other. Therefore, it is considered that the thinner cover of thickness, corrosive products deposited on the surface of the embedded steel bar plays the role as a resistance polarization which is resulted in decreasing the corrosion rate as well as shifting the corrosion potential in the positive direction. As a result, it seemed that the evaluation which corrosion possibility of the reinforced steel would be estimated by only measuring the corrosion potential may not be a completely desirable method. Therefore, it is suggested that we should take into account various parameters, including cover thickness, passed aged years as well as corrosion potential for more accurate assessment of corrosion possibility of reinforced steel which is exposed to partially or fully in marine environment for long years.

<P>We propose a theoretical model of the wavelength-locked Fabry-Pe/spl acute/rot laser diode (F-P LD) to the externally injected narrow-band amplified spontaneous emission. The model explains the dynamics of the wavelength-locked F-P LD. The simulation results with the proposed model show good agreement with the experimental results.</P>

Many surface protection methods have been developed to apply to constructional steels which have been used under severe corrosive environments. One of these methods, hot dip galvanizing is being widely used to the numerous constructional steels such as a guard rail of high way, various types of structural steel for manufacturing ship and for some other industrial fields etc.. Recently, the cost of zinc is getting higher and higher, thus, it is considered that improvement of hot dip galvanizing process to reduce the cost of production should be developed possibly. In this study, additives such as acid cleaning solution, NH₄OH, Al(OH)₃ and H₂O₂ were added to flux solution, and omission of water washing treatment after acid cleaning was investigated with some types of flux solutions added with some additives mentioned above. The decrement of pH by adding the acid cleaning solution could be controlled due to neutralization reaction with addition of NH₄OH. The flux solution added with both NH₄OH and Al(OH)₃ exhibited nearly the same color and pH value as those of orignal flux solution with no added, and the sample dipped to the flux solution which was added with additives mentioned above indicated a relatively good corrosion resistance compared to other samples. However, the flux solution added with NH₄OH, Al(OH)₃ and H₂O₂ exhibited a different color, sediment and a bad corrosion resistance. Consequently, it is considered that omission of water washing treatment may be able to perform by adding optimum additives to the original flux solution.
