N/A There is no acceptable evidence, either in this presentation of in the literature, that the patterns of occurance of multiple primary maligant neoplasms of different organs of tissues are governed by anything more than conincidence. The freqency of occurance of specific types of second primary cancers is probably largely determined by the age of the patient at the time of diagnosis of initial cancer and the expected longevity after treatment of the initial lesion. The absolute number of reported cases of multiple primary malignant tumors has increased in recent years and the freqency of occurance of this phenomenon has increased. There is no factual basis for assuming that the existence of any one malignant neoplasm influence or that it implies any susceptibility of any other organ or organ system to future cancer. But it becomes apparent that existence of one malignant neoplasm implies increased susceptibility to the development of a second lesion but also a malignant lesion in one organ may imply increased susceptibility of another organ to malignant neoplasm, particularly another organ in the same or an associated system. This report deals with the clincal analysis of 42 cases of multiple primary malignant tumors from tumor registry of Severance hospital and yonsei cancer center during 7 years from Jan 1979 to Dec. 1985 and review of the literatures, The following results were abtained. 1) The incidence of multiple primary malignant tumor was 0.26% of tumor registry (42/25, 863) and the mean age of 26 male patients at first cancer was 58.8 years old and 54.9 years old in 16 female patients. 2) The mean time interval between first and second cancer was 34.1 months in 12 metachronous tumors. 3) In male patients, the stomach cancer was the most common first cancer followed by lung cancer. In female patients, the cancer of uterine cervix was the most common first cancer. 4) The ratio between synchronous and metachronous multiple primary was 2.5:1 (30:12).
The 14-3-3 Gene Function of Cryptococcus neoformans Is Required for its Growth and Virulence

Cryptococcus neoformans is a life-threatening pathogenic yeast that causes devastating meningoencephalitis. The mechanism of cryptococcal brain invasion is largely unknown, and recent studies suggest that its extracellular microvesicles may be involved in the invasion process. The 14-3-3 protein is abundant in the extracellular microvesicles of C. neoformans, and the 14-3-3-GFP fusion has been used as the microvesicle’s marker. However, the physiological role of 14-3-3 has not been explored. In this report, we have found that C. neoformans contains a single 14-3-3 gene that apparently is an essential gene. To explore the functions of 14-3-3, we substituted the promoter region of the 14-3-3 with the copper-controllable promoter CTR4. The CTR4 regulatory strain showed an enlarged cell size, drastic changes in morphology, and a decrease in the thickness of the capsule under copper-enriched conditions. Furthermore, the mutant cells produced a lower amount of total proteins in their extracellular microvesicles and reduced adhesion to human brain microvascular endothelial cells in vitro. Proteomic analyses of the protein components under 14-3-3-overexpressed and -suppressed conditions revealed that the 14-3-3 function(s) might be associated with the microvesicle biogenesis. Our results support that 14-3-3 has diverse pertinent roles in both physiology and pathogenesis in C. neoformans. Its gene functions are closely relevant to the pathogenesis of this fungus.

Introduction of double cropping of winter cereals-summer corn is important for increasing grain self-sufficiency in South Korea. Adaptability for cropping seasons, and silage and grain yields of double cropping corn planted in early- and late-June to winter barley were compared with single cropping corn planted normally in late April for 2008 and 2009 in central part of Korea. Physiological maturity of corn planted in June was delayed to late September or mid October while that of single cropping corn planted in April was delayed to late August. There was not much difference in total GDD among planting times. Stover DM of corn was 30% less than that of single cropping corn, but reduction of ear DM or grain yields by later planting due to double cropping was 4% less. Yields of double-cropped corn, particularly in ear DM or grain yield increased as planting density increased to 7.78 × 104 plants ha-1. It is thought that the double cropping of winter barley-corn for silage production could be accepted easily because of better weather condition for corn harvest, higher annual total silage yield and enough time for seedbed preparation for barley. Double cropping with barley silage for corn grain could be practiced without reduction of corn grain. But cropping season of barley grain - corn grain was short because of overlapping between corn maturity and annual barley seeding in mid-October.
