Background/Aims: Propranolol can prevent variceal bleeding by ameliorating portal hypertension. We conducted this study to determine the effect of propranolol on portal hypertension and the optimal required dose in Korean cirrhotic patients. Methods: This study prospectively evaluated 50 patients with cirrhosis who exhibited variceal bleeding. The hepatic venous pressure gradient (HVPG), portal venous flow, heart rate (HR), and blood pressure were assessed both at baseline and at 3 months after the treatment. The initial dose of propranolol (20 mg) was subsequently adjusted until the target HR was reached. Patients in whom HVPG reduced by >20% or to less than 12 mmHg were defined as responders. Results: Propranolol significantly (p<0.01) reduced the HVPG (-21±26%, mean±standard deviation), portal venous flow (-25±21%), HR (-20±13%), and blood pressure (-3±13%). Twenty-nine patients were responders, and the optimal required dose was 154.4 mg. The main complication was dizziness (24%), but this was not serious enough to require medication withdrawal. Conclusions: Propranolol is safe and effective at reducing portal pressure in Korean cirrhotic patients. An effective improvement in portal hypertension requires the dose to be increased until the target HR is reached. (Gut and Liver 2007;1:159-164)

<P>We propose two discrete fiber Raman amplifier schemes using Raman ring fiber oscillator, a two-stage scheme, and a forward pumping scheme, to reduce double Rayleigh backscattering noise at high gains over 20 dB. Both schemes have low noise characteristics compared to a previous scheme. Bit-error-rate measurements at 10 Gb/s show power penalty free operation for the two-stage scheme at a gain of 25 dB.</P>

The main goal of Ubiquitous computing is that providing innovated service to user and new computing methodology is required to achieve this goal. The CUS (Center for Ubiquitous System Research Lab) has developed new computing paradigm which is called Community Computing (CC). In this paper, we describe CC briefly and explain how this new paradigm applies to home environment.
주변환경을 고려한 대규모 교통유발시설 주차면산정 모형개발에 관한 연구

최근 우리나라는 급격한 산업발달로 인해 국가 경제의 발전과 국민 소득 증가로 인해 도시의 팽창과 집중현상 및 자동차의 증가로 인해 교통문제가 발생하고 있는 실정이다. 그중 자동차의 주차수요에 맞는 주차장 공급을 과소 또는 과대 공급하게 되어 교통문제 및 토지이용의 비효율화로 인해 자원을 낭비하고 있다. 이로 연구의 목적은 다양한 시설별 용도의 다양성과 복합적인 기능으로 인한 탄력적인 주차면산정 모형을 구축하는데 있다. 이를 위해 이연구는 국내 판매시설 25개소의 여러 주변환경 변수를 활용하여 통계 프로그램인 SPSS 23.0을 이용하였다. 또한 주차면산정 모형은 다중회귀분석을 이용하여 구축하였다. 주요 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째 주차면산정 예측모형은 누적주차대수와 비교하였을 때 주차면이 많이 제공되어 대규모 교통유발시설 이용객의 현실성 및 이용객 편의성을 고려할 수 있다고 평가되었다. 둘째, 누적주차대수를 기준으로 평균원단위로 산정된 주차면과 예측모형으로 산정된 주차면을 비교한 결과 모형식에 비해 5.62%의 오차가 적은 것으로 산정되어 주차면예측모형이 효율적이라 판단되었다. 마지막으로 주차면산정 예측모형의 독립변수에는 자동차등록대수, 인구밀도, 경쟁업체수, 공시지가, 버스노선수가 채택되었다.

<P>We have designed and synthesized a new polymer, which could be used in the organic thin film transistor (OTFT). Poly[2,6-bis(3′-dodecythiophene-2′-yl)anthracene] (PDTAn), which is composed with anthracene moiety and dodecyl alkyl thiophene, was synthesized by oxidative polymerization using iron (III) chloride. The mole ratio of FeCl<SUB>3</SUB> and monomer (4.2:1), keeping low temperature during the initiation reaction, amount of solvent, and dropping order were very important for oxidative polymerization without crosslinking. The molecular weight of the polymer (M<SUB>w</SUB>) was measured to be 40,000 with 2.85 of polydispersity index by GPC. The physical and optical properties of the polymer were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), cyclic voltammetry (CV), and optical absorption and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. Acute rejection (AR) after kidney transplantation resulting from alloimmune responses has a negative effect on graft survival. IL17, the hallmark cytokine of the newly defined Th17 cell subset, might have a role for the inflammatory response during allograft rejection. IL17RA mainly reacts with IL17A and elicit signal transduction. Many reports showed that single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of these cytokines can affect the occurrence of AR. Therefore, we have evaluated 332 renal allograft recipients to investigate the relationship between IL17A and IL17RA polymorphisms and AR in Korean population. All 332 renal transplant recipients were divided into 198 men with mean age (± standard deviation) 39.5 (± 11.7) years and 134 women, mean age 41.0 (± 10.9) years. The mean follow up duration after kidney transplantation was 74.4 months and the overall number of AR group was 58. We selected 6 SNPs of IL17A (rs3819024, rs2275913) and IL17RA (rs879575, rs879577, rs2229151, rs4819554) gene and genotyped them to evaluate the association of SNPs and AR. Genotyping data demonstrated no significant association between SNPs and AR by logistic regression analysis after adjustment for age, gender, immunosuppressive therapies (antimetabolite, and basiliximab) except rs879577 for IL17RA. Codominant model of rs879577 (p= 0.004, odds ratio 0.11, 95% confidence intervals 0.02-0.86) was significant. To demonstrate pair-wise linkage disequlibrium (LD), no LD block was created using the Gabriel method. In conclusion, these results suggest that the IL17RA gene polymorphism may be related to the development of AR in kidney transplant recipients.

목 적: 정자의 동결 과정에서 생길 수 있는 급격한 온도 차에 의한 동결 충격이나 동결 상해등에 의한 세포막의 손상, 세포의 기능 장애 등은 정자의 수정능에 영향을 미칠 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 인간 정자를 동결 보존하는 과정에서 콜레스테롤 전처리가 정자의 운동성 및 기능보존에 미치는 영향을 알아보고자 하였다. 연구방법: 본원을 내원한 14명 남성의 정자를 대상으로 콜레스테롤을 첨가하지 않은 대조군 (control)과 여러 농도의 콜레스테롤을 동결보존액에 첨가한 실험군에서 정자의 동결-융해 후 상태를 다음 3가지 방법으로 비교, 분석하였다. 1) 정자 분석, 2) calcium ionophore로 유도된 첨체 반응 검사, 3) 정자 염색질 구조 분석 (sperm chromatin structure assay). 결 과: 첫째로 인간 정자의 운동성은 $0.5{\mu}g$ 농도의 콜레스테롤을 첨가한 동결보존액에서 동결-해동하였을 경우, 콜레스테롤을 첨가하지 않은 군에 비해 유의적 차이를 보이며 증가하는 것을 확인하였다 ($33.46{\pm}1.48%$ vs. $30.10{\pm}1.07%$, p<0.05). 다음으로 동된 정자의 첨체 반응 검사에서도 콜레스테롤을 첨가한 동결보존액에서의 첨체 반응이 일어나는 정자의 비율이 첨가하지 않은 군에 비해 유의하게 높게 관찰되었다 ($53.60{\pm}1.60%$ vs. $47.40{\pm}1.86%$, p<0.05). 마지막으로 정자 염색질 구조 분석에서는 콜레스테롤을 첨가한 군이 첨가하지 않은 군에 비해 정자의 DNA손상이 적게 나타남을 확인하였다. 결 론: 본 실험은 동결보존액을 통한 정자 원형질막 내 콜레스테롤 함유량의 증가가 동결-융해 후 정자의 운동성과 수정능(capacitation status)을 증가시키고 DNA 손상을 방지하는 역할을 한다는 결과를 보여주었다. 이러한 결과를 통해 동결보존액 내 콜레스테롤의 첨가는 인간 정자의 동결보존 동안 발생할 수 있는 동결 상해를 줄여줄 수 있는 유용한 방법으로 사료된다. Objective: During cryopreservation process, cold shock and cryo-injury affect the fertilizing capacity of the sperm by damaging cell membranes with loss of functional integrity. A longstanding concept for preventing the cryo-damage is to stabilize the plasma membrane by incorporating cholesterol. This study was to determine the effects of cholesterol in freezing media on the motility and functional integrity of human sperm after cryopreservation. Methods: Control group (non-cholesterol treated) and different concentrations of cholesterol-treated sperm (14 healthy males) were frozen and thawed. After freezing and thawing of sperm, the quality of sperm was evaluated by sperm analysis, acrosome reaction test and sperm chromatin structure assay. Results: When human sperm were incubated in sperm freezing medium (SFM) containing $0.5{\mu}g$ cholesterol and then freezing/thawing, the motility of sperm have significantly improved compared to those untreated cholesterol ($33.46{\pm}1.48%$ vs. $30.10{\pm}1.07%$, p<0.05). The rate of calcium ionophore-induced acrosome reactions in post-thawed sperm was significantly higher than that ($53.60{\pm}1.60%$ vs. $47.40{\pm}1.86%$, p<0.05) in SFM containing cholesterol. Sperm chromatin structure assay revealed that DNA damage to the sperm in the cholesterol-treated group was lower than that of non-treated group. Conclusion: These results suggest that increased cholesterol content of sperm plasma membrane by supplementation of cholesterol in SFM improves sperm motility, capacitation status, and DNA integrity. Therefore, addition of cholesterol into SFM could be a useful for protecting human sperm from cold shock and cryo-injury during cryopreservation.

Recently, increasing evidence suggests that neuroinflammation may be a critical factor in the development of Parkinson’s disease (PD) in addition to the ratio of acetylcholine/dopamine because dopaminergic neurons are particularly vulnerable to inflammatory attack. In this study, we investigated whether botulinum neurotoxin A (BoNT-A) was effective for the treatment of PD through its anti-neuroinflammatory effects and the modulation of acetylcholine and dopamine release. We found that BoNT-A ameliorated MPTP and 6-OHDA-induced PD progression, reduced acetylcholine release, levels of IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-α as well as GFAP expression, but enhanced dopamine release and tyrosine hydroxylase expression. These results indicated that BoNT-A had beneficial effects on MPTP or 6-OHDA-induced PD-like behavior impairments via its anti-neuroinflammation properties, recovering dopamine, and reducing acetylcholine release.
