Fungus such as Candida albicans is a normal flora that is frequently found in the oral cavity, gastrointestinal tract, genitourinary tract, vaginal mucosa in a normal person. However, candida can cause opportunistic infection in an immune compromised host. Candidiasis has broad spectrum of disease from mucocutaneous infection to invasive or disseminated infection. But, it is rarely reported that candida is associaed with gastrointestinal tract disease in a healthy adult. The case of gastric ulcer associated with candida particularly in a health adult is reported with relevant literature.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to analyze Influence of stress on oral health and quality of life. Methods: The participants were 172 students from 4 universities located in DaeJeon, South Korea. A questionnaire was administered, assessing the impacts of the general characteristics of the participants , temporomandibular joint (TMJ) symptoms, xerostomia, and halitosis on stress. And oral impacts on daily performance were also investigated. Data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences 18.0. Results: The level of stress was higher in female, and the causes of stress was reported scholastic achievement, relations with professors, get a job. The students who were higher stress were more conscious of TMJ symptoms, xerostomia and halitosis(p<0.05). Stress was significantly positively correlated with TMJ symptoms (r=0.376, p <0.001), dry mouth (r=0.360, p <0.001), and bad breath (r=0.343, p <0.001). Oral Impacts on Daily Performance (OIDP) scores were significantly positively correlated with dry mouth, bad breath, TMJ symptoms, and stress. Regression analysis showed that 54.5% of the independent variables were related to OIDP scores. Stress and TMJ symptoms exerted a significant effect on OIDP scores. Conclusions: Stress among university students affects oral health and quality of life. Stress coping mechanisms and oral health care education programs should be developed and applied at universities.
Vol.39 No.2
The number of HIV infected women continues to rise sharply these days and 58% of these women were childbearing age. The increase in the number of AIDS cases among childbearing women has led to an increase in the maternal - infant transmission of human acquired immunodeficiency virus. The aim of our study is to assess the available evidence for preventing mother-to-infant transmission of HIV infection by experience from University Teaching Hospital. Four pregnant women with HIV infection delivered in Pusan National University Hospital from 1999 to 2005 years. Three women visitied at 3rd trimester, only one woman delivered by planned perinatal care. They received antiretroviral therapy during pregnancy, labor, after delivery, and infant received antiretroviral therapy by consideration of their situation. They were compliant with treatment and had a sustained virologic response below the detectable level. Just 2% of infants were trasmitted by human acquired immunodeficiency virus, if HIV infected women had an appropriate prophylaxis. Therefore HIV infected women must be identified early for prevention of maternal-infant transmission, they must receive effective antiretrovirus therapy.

Here we report the first fatality caused by H1N1 influenza virus infection with acute respiratory distress syndrome in Korea. A 55-year-old man presented at our emergency department with dyspnea, fever, diffuse myalgia and malaise. Bilateral lung air-space consolidation was detected on his initial chest radiograph combined with severe hypoxemia. He was supported by mechanical ventilation and treated with antibiotics. A nasopharyngeal aspirate was positive for influenza A rapid antigen and oseltamivir was started on day 3 of admission. The nasal swab sample was positive for influenza H1N1 virus by real-time reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction. Despite aggressive treatment, he had refractory hypoxemia and uncontrolled septic shock. On day 5 of admission he went into cardiac arrest and expired.
