Background: miRNAs are relatively recently discovered cancer biomarkers which have important implications for cancer early diagnosis, treatment and estimation of prognosis. Here we focussed on expression of mir-196a-5p in gastric cancer tissues and cell lines so as to analyse its significance for clinicopathologic characteristics and generate enriched KEGG pathways clustered by target genes for exploring its potential roles as a biomarker in gastric cancer. Materials and Methods: The expression of mir-196a-5p in poorly, moderate and well differentiated gastric cancer cell lines compared with GES-1 was detected by RT-qPCR, and the expression of mir-196a-5p in gastric cancer tissues comparing with adjacent non cancer tissues of 58 cases were also assessed by RT-qPCR. Subsequently, an analysis of clinical significance of mir-196a-5p in gastric cancer and enriched KEGG pathways was executed based on the miRWalk prediction database combined with bioinformatics tools DAVID 6.7 and Mirfocus 3.0. Results: RT-qPCR showed that mir-196a-5p was up-regulated in 6 poorly and moderate differentiated gastric cancer cell lines SGC-7901, MKN-45, MKN-28, MGC-803, BGC-823, HGC-27 compared with GES-1, but down-regulated in the highly differentiated gastric cancer cell line AGS. Clinical data indicated mir-196a-5p to beup-regulated in gastric cancer tissues (47/58). Overexpression of mir-196a-5p was associated with more extensive degree of lymph node metastasis and clinical stage (P < 0.05; x2 test). Enriched KEGG pathway analyses of predicted and validated targets in miRWalk combined with DAVID 6.7 and Mirfocus 3.0 showed that the targeted genes regulated by mir-196a-5p were involved in malignancy associated biology. Conclusions: Overexpression of mir-196a-5p is associated with lymph node metastasis and clinical stage, and enriched KEGG pathway analyses showed that targeted genes regulated by mir-196a-5p may contribute to tumorgenesis, suggesting roles as an oncogenic miRNA biomarker in gastric cancer.

B-32 is one of a panel of monoclonal anti-idiotypic antibodies to growth hormone (GH) that we developed. To characterize and identify its potential role as a novel growth hormone receptor (GHR) agonist, we determined that B-32 behaved as a typical Ab2β based on a series of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay assays. The results of fluorescence-activated cell sorting, indirect immunofluorescence and competitive receptor binding assays demonstrated that B-32 specifically binds to the GHR expressed on target cells. Next, we examined the resulting signal transduction pathways triggered by this antibody in primary porcine hepatocytes. We found that B-32 can activate the GHR and Janus kinase (2)/signal transducers and activators of transcription (JAK2/STAT5) signalling pathways. The phosphorylation kinetics of JAK2/STAT5 induced by either GH or B-32 were analysed in dose-response and time course experiments. In addition, B32 could also stimulate porcine hepatocytes to secrete insulin-like growth factors-1. Our work indicates that a monoclonal anti-idiotypic antibody to GH (B-32) can serve as a GHR agonist or GH mimic and has application potential in domestic animal (pig) production.

Purpose: Chemotherapy-induced anemia (CIA) is one of the most important causes of anemia in cancer patients. This study was conducted to describe the prevalence and characteristics of CIA in solid cancer patients in the Chinese population, and to explore the relationship of white blood cell (WBC) or platelet decrease with CIA. Methods: Data on age, gender, tumor diagnosis, anti-cancer treatment and blood cell analyses were available from 220 untreated non-anemic cancer patients who received at least 2 cycles of chemotherapy, and the data were analyzed to assess their relationship with CIA or its severity. Results: 139 patients (63.2%) presented anemia, most being Grade 1 or 2. Esophageal and lung cancers were associated with a high prevalence. G3/4 leucopenia and decrease of platelets were identified as independent risk factors for the occurrence of CIA. Moreover, G3/4 leucopenia, decrease of platelet and G3/4 thrombocytopenia were found to be also associated with the severity of CIA. Cisplatin-containing regimens were a main potential factor in causing CIA, although significant association was only found on univariate analysis. Conclusion: Anemia or decrease in hematoglobin are common in Chinese cancer patients receiving chemotherapy. Cisplatin-containing regimens might be an important factor influencing the occurrence of CIA. Our analysis firstly described some risk factors, such as decrease of platelets or WBCs, severity of leucopenia or thrombocytopenia, associated with the occurrence and severity of CIA.

500MPa steel bar is a new type of high-strength reinforcing bar applied in China. To investigate the feasibility of using this type of reinforcement in specially shaped column structure, six +-shaped column specimens varying in axial compression ratio and stirrup spacing were tested under cyclic loading. Behaviors in failure mode, shear crack width, bearing capacity, displacement ductility and energy dissipating capacity are studied to evaluate the seismic resistance performance of the columns. Test results show that 500 MPa steel bars can be effectively used as longitudinal reinforcement and provide more significant confinement to core concrete as transverse reinforcement. It is demonstrated by the observed results that expected oversize flexure-shear crack width can be prevented through an appropriate design procedure following the current building codes in China. Reducing stirrup spacing provides better performance in member ductility, crack behavior, cumulative damage and energy dissipation capacity, but has little influence on the bearing capacity; high axial load can offer advantages in bearing capacity, energy dissipating capacity and shear crack behavior, but reduce the member ductility. To predict the behavior of test specimens under cyclic loading, analytical model are implemented in program OpenSees using flexural fiber beam-column element with the consideration of the shear effect. Analytical results have an acceptable agreement with the test results.

In this study, an ultrasound visualization system has been set up for in-situ monitoring of the resin flow impregnating through opaque carbon fiber reinforcements during the vacuum-assisted resin transfer molding. The flow front advancement through the carbon fabrics covered by a bagging film can be identified and visualized by the high frequency B (brightness) mode ultrasound imaging technique. The resin advancement in the opaque carbon fabrics has turned out to form a non-uniform plug flow along the pressure gradient direction and the potential void formation can be observed from the mesoscopic resin flow behavior: the inter-tow regions have been preferentially filled by the resin fluid and the fiber tow region behaves as a sink that probably remain as a void defect. The local unsaturated transient velocity of the resin flow has been also evaluated, which is particularly important in understanding saturation behaviors in dual-scale fabrics and is hardly measurable by other means. In spite of the hardware limitations on the resolution, the proposed ultrasound visualization system can provide a less expensive and portable visualization tool to understand the microstructure of opaque reinforcements and monitor the resin flow behavior during the vacuum-assisted resin transfer molding process in the industrial composite manufacturing environment.

Photoinitiated living radical polymerization has attracted wide attention in recent years. Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is a kind of semi-conducting metal oxide which is widely used in water treatment, photovoltaics and organic synthesis. However, there is few application in living radical polymerization. In this study, photoinduced electron transfer-reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (PET-RAFT) polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) using TiO2 as photoredox catalyst is successfully carried out. It offers good control over molecular weights and polydispersities (PDI). The end group fidelity of PMMA is successfully demonstrated by chain extension for the preparation of poly(methyl methacrylate)-b-poly(dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (PMMA-b-PDMAEMA) copolymer. Moreover, the polymerization can be controlled by switching “ON” and “OFF” the light.
Analyzing Errors Made by Eighth-Grade Students in Solving Geometrical Problems
( Huang Xing Feng ),( Cheng Long Hai ) 한국수학교육학회 2011 수학교육연구 Vol.15 No.4
In mathematical problem solving, students may make various errors. In order to draw useful lessons from the errors, and then correct them, we surveyed 24 eighth-grade students` performances in geometrical problem solving according to Casey`s hierarchy of errors. It was found that: 1. Students`` effect can lead to errors at the stage of "comprehension", "strategy selection", and "skills manipulation"; and 2. Students`` geometric schemas also influenced their strategy selection".

Dong, Hang,Tang, Jie,Li, Long-Hao,Ge, Jun,Chen, Xin,Ding, Jing,Men, Hai-Tao,Luo, Wu-Xia,Du, Yang,Li, Cong,Zhao, Feng,Chen, Ye,Cheng, Ke,Liu, Ji-Yan Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2013 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.14 No.2
Purpose: The liver is the organ to which colorectal carcinomas (CRCs) most commonly metastasize, and surgical resection has been established as the most effective and potentially curative treatment for CRC with liver metastasis (LM). Therefore, surveillance of LM is vital for improvement of prognosis of CRC patients. In this study, we aimed to explore the potential value of carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA 19-9), carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), and marker enzymes in indicating LM with CRC. Methods: Three groups of eligible patients with metastatic cancers were retrospectively included: CRC patients with LM (CRC-LM) or without LM (CRC-NLM), and non-CRC patients with LM (NCRC-LM). All metastatic lesions were identified by CT or MRI. Data on characteristics of the patients, the primary site, the locations of metastasis, CA 19-9, CEA, and biochemical parameters were collected for analysis. Results: A total of 493 patients were retrospectively included. More alcohol consumption was found in CRC-LM than CRC-NLM. Some biochemical enzymes were found to be significantly higher in groups with LM than without (CRC-LM or NCRC-LM v.s CRC-NLM). Both CEA and CA 19-9 were much higher in CRC-LM than CRC-NLM or NCRC-LM. For CRC patients, CA 19-9, ${\gamma}$-glutamyl transpeptidase, CEA and alcohol consumption were identified as independent factors associated with LM. Conclusion: Our analysis suggested the CA 19-9 might be a potential valuable indicator for LM of CRC in the clinic.
