A Longitudinal Study on the Prevalence of Major Adult Chronic Disease in Korean Employees between 2001 and 2010

The Korean GDP per capita doubled during the last 10 years. As the GDP increases, Korean health behaviors such as, eating, drinking, smoking, and exercise habits changed as well. Compared to the remarkably advanced diagnostic technologies and therapeutics during the last decade, the leading causes of death in Korea scarcely changed. Among the leading causes of death, cerebrovascular disease, heart disease, diabetes, liver disease and hypertension are closely related to health behaviors. Using the database of medical check-up between 2001 and 2010, the authors performed a longitudinal study for the prevalence rates and the trends of major chronic adult diseases among the 2,721 workers along with their health behavior. Among the diagnostic test items, fasting blood sugar, cholesterol and BMI levels showed steady increase and these three test items all showed linear trends (p<0.001). The average blood sugar and cholesterol levels were near worrying levels. Moreover, the average BMI of males was foundto be at the overweight level, intimating the possibility reaching thee Obese Class I level soon if there are no aggressive counter measures. Fasting blood sugar and cholesterol levels were higher in a drinking group as compared to a non-drinking group, and the BMI levels were also higher in the drinking group and the smoking group as compared to the non-drinking and the non-smoking group (p<0.001). Finally, the authors believe that the fasting blood sugar, cholesterol and BMI levels should be designated as target monitoring test items in the medical check-up for Korean employees.

Age-Associated Changes in the Vascular Renin-Angiotensin System in Mice

<P><I>Background</I>. This study evaluated whether the change in the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) is associated with arterial aging in mice.<I> Methods</I>. Histologic changes and expressions of transforming growth factor-<I>β</I> (TGF-<I>β</I>), collagen IV,<I> fibronectin</I>, angiotensin II (Ang II), angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), angiotensin II type 1 receptor (AT1R), angiotensin II type 2 receptor (AT2R), prorenin receptor (PRR), Mas receptor (MasR), endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS), NADPH oxidase 2 and oxidase 4 (Nox2 and Nox4), 8-hydroxy-2′-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG),<I> 3-nitrotyrosine</I>, and superoxide dismutase 1 and dismutase 2 (SOD1 and SOD2) were measured in the thoracic aortas from 2-month-old, 12-month-old, and 24-month-old C57/BL6 mice.<I> Results</I>. Twenty-four-month-old mice showed significantly increased aortic media thickness and expressions of TGF-<I>β</I>, collagen IV, and fibronectin, compared to 2-month-old and 12-month-old mice. The expressions of PRR, ACE, and Ang II, and AT1R-positive area significantly increased, whereas expressions of ACE2 and MasR and AT2R-positive area decreased with age. The expressions of phosphorylated serine<SUP>1177</SUP>-eNOS, SOD1, and SOD2 decreased, and the 8-OHdG-positive area and the 3-nitrotyrosine-positive area increased with age. The expression of Nox2 significantly increased with age, but that of Nox4 did not change.<I> Conclusions</I>. The enhanced PRR-ACE-Ang II-AT1R axis and reduced ACE2-MasR axis were associated with arterial aging in mice. </P>

Characterization of changes in global gene expression in the brain of neuron-specific enolase/human Tau23 transgenic mice in response to overexpression of Tau protein.

<P>Tau is a neuronal phosphoprotein responsible for the formation of the neurofibrillary tangles in Alzheimer's disease. To characterize the changes in global gene expression in the brain of transgenic mice that overexpress human Tau23 protein in response to the increase of Tau23 phosphorylation, total RNA extracted from the hippocampus of 12-month-old transgenic and wild-type mice was converted to cDNA, labeled with biotin and hybridized to oligonucleotide microarrays. The microarray results were confirmed by real-time RT-PCR and Western blotting method. It was determined that 43 genes were up-regulated and 8 genes were down-regulated by Tau23 in transgenic mice compared to controls, based on the arbitrary difference in the 2-fold change. Among the up-regulated transcripts, those encoding for transporter and oxidoreductase were dramatically over-represented, followed by those related to regulatory molecule, cytoskeletal protein, signaling molecule, and extracellular matrix protein. Genes encoding for transcription factor, regulatory molecule, miscellaneous function, and chaperone were significantly reduced in the down-regulated group. The major genes in the up-regulated categories included Ecrg4, Folr1, Defb11, Aqp1 and Soctdc1. The major genes in the down-regulated categories were Ncor1, Gpm6a, and Hspd1. These results indicate that the microarray analysis identifies several gene functional groups and individual genes that respond to a sustained increase in Tau23 phosphorylation levels in the brain of transgenic mice. In addition, the results suggest the microarray test is a useful tool for increased understanding of the role of Tau23 protein in regulating neurodegenerative disorders.</P>

S-상 심실중격의 임상적 고찰

Background: The sigmoid septum described an anatomical variation in the contour of the left ventricular outlet. It is related to degenerative change with aging. We observed clinical significance of sigmoid septum in Korean. Methods: Echocardiographic examination was performed in 434 patients. Sigmoid septum is defined as discrete bulging of the proximal interventricular septum with that thickness is greater than 1.3cm or the thickness is grater 1.5 times than adjacent mid interventricular septum in apical 3 chamber view. Result: The incidence of patient with sigmoid septum(septum patient) is 24.8% (male 8.4%, female 16.3%) . The incidence increases with age and is more common in women. The patients with sigmoid septum were compared with targeted groups, there was no significant difference in blood pressure between them, but in height and weight, the former were lower. (p<001, p<03). In the patients with sigmoid septum, weight and the surface area of a body have an opposite correlation with increase of age (p<03, r=-0.34) (p<04, r=-0.31) , but no decrease of height was found according to age increase (p=0.47, r=-0.11) The main reason patients with sigmoid septum ask echocardiolography and its clinical symptoms were abnormal results of previous electrocardiography and/or usual chest pain. Compared with control group, interventricular septal thickness is larger in septum patients (p<001). The thickness of interventricular septum located in subaortic left ventricular outflow tract is 1.6±0.3cm. There is another web like structure that continued from interventricualr septum to anterior free wall of left ventricle and the width is 1.6±0.4cm. A sign of insignificant obstruction due to left ventricular outflow was observed from three sigmoid septum patients. Conculusion: Septum patient is largely found in older age group and the body weight and body surface area are lower than control group. The body weight and body surface area are opposite correlation with age. So sigmoid septum is considered as structural change by weight reduction with aging. It is assumed that septum patients are related with asymptomatic ischemia because they have more abnormal ECG finding such as T wave inversion on precordial leads or standard leads, nonspecific ST-T change, LBBB etc. Sigmoid septum is not only proximal interventricular septal bludging but also another web like structure continuing to anterior wall of left ventricle.

현대 산업사회에서는 대중소비문화가 커다란 계층을 형성하고 있으며,사회구조가 다원화됨에 따라 소비자들의 의식구조 또한 개성을 중심으로 자기만족을 지향하는 사고로 전환되고 있다. 오늘날 우리는 일상의 삶에서 키치와 끊임없이 관계를 맺고 있으며,키치로부터 자유로울 수 없다. 특히,현대에는 저급한 내용의 키치가 고급 대중문화 매체인 광고와 만나면서 다양한 소비자들의 욕구를 창조하게 되었고, 광고의 영향력 또한 그 속에 포함된 키치적 특성에 의해 소비자의 생활패턴을 지배하기에 이르렀다. 최근 광고의 표현에서는 설명보다는 기호와 이미지를 중시하고 언뜻 보아서는 무슨 내용인지 감이 안 잡히는 광고가 유행하고 있는데,이러한 광고들이 감각적이고 가벼운 것을 좋아하며,무거운 것을 거부하는 신세대들의 취향을 절묘하게 만족시키고 있는 것이다. 광고가 문화를 반영함에 따라 소비자들은 더욱 개성과 다양성을 추구하며,기호가 더욱 세분화되고 무언가 다른 것을 원하는 문화의 비주류현상으로 인하여 오늘날에는 이러한 키치광고가 주를 이루는 현실에 이르렀다. In recent decade, consumer behavior based on the various social structures is being transferred to the new era with self-satisfaction and strengthened individuality of consumers, so that public consumption is an unavoidable factor in modern industrial society. In this respect, it is apparent to say that we would not merely be able to explain our ordinary life without 'kitsch', In particular, kitsch is often able to be combined with advertising media, the upper cultural vehicle, in the latest years that can create various types of consumer demands and desires. In the meantime, the advertising in accordance with kitsch elements is heavilyinfluential to the life pattern and behaviors of consumers. In consideration of latest trends of advertising, symbol and image are distinctively popular which seems to be somewhat ambiguous to the consumers rather than just explanation. It is due to thefact that this trend of advertising might be able to meet the requirement of consumers consisted of young generation who prefer light and sensible advertising expression to serious and traditional advertising. As culture is reflected in the advertising, consumers conduct further the pursuit of individuality and diversity in conjunction with diversityof symbol in depth and the demand of uniqueness.For these above-mentioned reasons, kitsch can be regarded as a main concept of advertising g trend at present.

3차원 비디오 자동 동작분석 시스템 개발

The purpose of this study was to develope both hardware and software of automatic 3-dimensional video motion analysis system. In this image capture system, the vedeo image was stored as a file in CD-Rom directly, the refore it was possible to analyze motion without VCR. Reflective markers were used to digitize automaticaly. C-language and MS-Visual Basic 5.0 ] anguage were utiliged in this software to analyze motion. The conclusions were as follows; 1. The vedeo information at sixty frames per second could be captured accurately as a image with a resolution photography of 640×480-24 bit. 2. It was possible to digitize both manually and automatically utilizing reflective marks attached the body. 3. The automatic 3-dimensional video motion analysis system, which was developed in this study not only increased accuracy but also reduced digitizing time so much.
