Feather waste, generated in large quantities as a byproduct of commercial poultry processing, is almost pure keratin, which is not easily degradable by common proteolytic enzymes. Several feather-degrading bacterial isolates were isolated from feather waste and soil. These isolates were able to degrade chicken feather, when grown on basal medium containing 1.0% native feather as a source of energy, carbon, and nitrogen. The isolates were characterized according to morphological characteristics and biochemical tests, and Vitek and API kit system. belonging to the Acinetobacter calcoaceticus complex, Bacillus thuringiensis, Bacillus circulans, Bacillus cereus. It was observed that aerobic growth by the isolate on single whole chicken feather, resulted in complete degradation of the keratin protein after 5-6 days of incubation at 37℃. The production of protein by the organism was decreased with cultivation time, with the maximum activity coinciding with the start of the stationary phase. The kerationolytic activity increased with cultivation time.
Relationship between R&D Efforts and Firm Value in the Pharmaceutical Industry

Besides spending on research and development (R&D), performance in terms of new drug application (NDA) and patent approval has been a key surrogate marker of R&D efforts of pharmaceutical firms. The results show that Korean firms are more responsive to patent approval, whereas non-Korean firms are more responsive to NDA approval. Although many recently approved patents of Korean firms are related to innovative discovery of novel drug candidates, the commercial value of NDA approvals accomplished by non-Korean firms is remarkably high. The annual quantitative accomplishment of NDA approval is small, considering the long development process. However, its commercial value is big and the drug receives worldwide acceptance. This is the reason why investors react positively to NDA approval news of non-Korean firms. The findings in this study imply that it would be advantageous for both Korean and non-Korean firms to persist with their R&D efforts, in accordance with their respective strategy. This would help in maintaining and upgrading their firm value as well as in developing new drivers of potential growth for corporate sustainability management, besides managing the financial capacity through firm-specific execution.
Reticulocytosis in screen-printing workers exposed to 2-butoxyethanol and 2-ethoxyethanol

Background: Studies on the hematologic toxicity of ethylene glycol ethers in humans are limited. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine the association between exposure to solvents (containing 2-butoxyethanol and 2-ethoxyethanol) and hematological effects. Methods: Thirty-four screen-printing workers who were exposed to 2-butoxyethanol and 2-ethoxyethanol and 37 nonexposed clerical workers were selected using data from the health care facilities that provided regular health screening services. Student’s t-tests and Pearson’s chi-square tests were used to compare differences in hematological parameters between the exposed and the control groups. A multivariate analysis was performed using the multiple logistic regression models to adjust for other variables. Results: The chi-square test showed the reticulocyte percentages and corrected reticulocyte counts to be significantly higher in the exposed group. The t-tests showed a significant increase in white blood cell counts, reticulocyte percentages, and corrected reticulocyte count (i.e., reticulocyte index) in the exposed group, with p-values of 0.002, 0.004, and 0.002, respectively. Multivariate analysis showed the odds ratio for the corrected reticulocyte counts to be 16.30 for the exposed group, when compared with that of the control group. Conclusions: Exposure to 2-butoxyethanol and 2-ethoxyethanol was significantly associated with reticulocytosis, necessitating the implementation of preventive measures for workers prone to occupational exposure to ethylene glycol ethers.
Electrospun Porous Polylactic Acid Fibers Containing CdS for Degradation of Methylene Blue

The immobilization of photocatalyst in polymer fibers has been found to improve photodegradation of dye andrecyclability of material. In this study, porous polylactic acid (PLA) fibers were utilized as photocatalyst support usingelectrospinning technique to synthesis the fibers. The cadmium sulfide (CdS) was embedded in fibers at the amount of1 wt%, 3 wt%, and 5 wt% as photocatalyst agent with absorption in visible light range. The electrospun fibers experiencedincreasing in diameter for 2.6 times (from 175 nm to 450 nm), due to incorporation of CdS. The synthesized CdS has bandgap of 2.35 eV, and its presence in composite fibers can be detected by using energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) and X-raydiffraction (XRD) analyses. The photodegradation was performed under low-powered halogen lamp, with 90 % removal ofmethylene blue (MB) after 10 hours of irradiation using CdS(3 wt%)/PLA fibers. This result shows higher performance incomparison with PLA and CdS which could only remove 57 % and 65 % of MB, respectively. The recyclability of compositewas tested with satisfying performance; with around 60 % of MB removal was maintained after five times of recycleexperiments.

This paper describes a lane following control of vision based mobile robot that follows guidline. Summation of binarization conversion and image data of vertical axis was used in image processing. As an extraction of specific parameters of lane image, the raw image was converted to the binary data, and the binary data was summerized to the specific data vertically. The specific parameters were made to the inputs of neural network. Summation of image data was used for input of the net, and optimized value of turn angles of learned mobile robot was output. By using neural network algorithm, possibility of mobile robot moving to the target point and following the guidlines quickly and effectively was proved.
ACL Reconstruction Using Hamstring Tendon Graft and Rigidfix

The authors describe a technique for reconstructing the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) using a hamstrings tendon graft for the management of anterior instability of the knee joint. The autogenous hamstring was used for the graft, which was fixed on the femoral side using Rigidfix and on the tibial side using an absorbable interference screw and a ligament staple. Twenty-five knees of 25 patients showed a good outcome after a short term follow-up evaluation. Femoral fixation with Rigidfix and tibial fixation and an absorbable interference screw ligament staple combined with an aggressive rehabilitation regimen can help stabilize the knee after an ACL reconstruction with a hamstring tendon.
