Vol.18 No.2

Today's popular ventilation systems include the combined jet fans and electrostatic precipitation systems or the combined jet fans and vertical shaft system. Tunnels with these two ventilation systems applied have been designed and opened, more and more interest has been put in maintenance of a tunnel after opening. Therefore. it is to become more important to come up with the optimal operation mode and the method for the evaluation of ventilation system. In this study, to evaluate a tunnel ventilation and its economy, a dynamic simulation program was developed which can simulate the unsteady-state tunnel air velocity and concentration of pollutants according to the traffic flow variations and operation condition of a ventilation system. We clarified the effectiveness usage on tunnel ventilation by using it and also we could found the most economical ventilation operation mode by application in real exit tunnel. We obtained that combination of fan system and electrostatic precipitation system was more economical than jet fan priority operation mode.

Effects of Stress on Mouse β-Defensin-3 Expression in the Upper Digestive Mucosa

        Rie Kawashima,Keiichi Tsukinoki,Tomoko Shimizu,Masahiro To,Juri Saruta,Yoshinori Jinbu,Mikio Kusama 2014 Yonsei medical journal Vol.55 No.2

Purpose: Gastrointestinal integrity and immune surveillance are affected by stress. Stress also adversely affects mucosal barrier function. β-defensins constitute an integralcomponent of the innate immune system as antimicrobial peptides, serving as the first line of defense against microbial pathogens at the epithelial surfaces of the upper digestive mucosa. The primary objective of this study was to determine the effects of stress on the expression profile of mouse β-defensin-3 in the upper digestivemucosa of mice with diabetes. Materials and Methods: We established a mouse model of restraint stress by using NSY/Hos mice with type 2 diabetes mellitus. We used real-time polymerase chain reaction, in situ hybridization, and immunohistochemistryto investigate the effects of stress and glucocorticoid administrationon mouse β-defensin-3 expression in the upper digestive mucosa of the gingiva, esophagus, and stomach. Results: Mouse β-defensin-3 mRNA expression was higher in the esophagus than in the gingiva or stomach (p<0.05). In the esophagus, mouse β-defensin-3 mRNA expression was lower in stressed mice than in non-stressed mice (p<0.05). Furthermore, immunoreactivity to mouse β-defensin-3 proteinwas lower in the esophagus of stressed mice than non-stressed mice, consistent with the results of mRNA expression analysis. Systemic glucocorticoid administrationalso downregulated esophageal mouse β-defensin-3 mRNA expression. Conclusion:Our novel findings show that stress decreases mouse β-defensin-3 expressionin the esophagus of mice with diabetes, possibly due to increased endogenous glucocorticoid production. It appears to be highly likely that stress management may normalize mucosal antimicrobial defenses in patients with diabetes.

        Race Wars in CELL

2016 Asian Journal of African Studies Vol.39 No.-

In the 19th century, a prominent American writer Mark Twain said, “God made Mauritius first and then modelled Heaven on the island.” Mauritius was mainly a green island with volcanic mountains and dodos. It took a long time for human beings to settle there. It was more difficult to live there permanently than to pay a short visit as a visiting ship’s crew. It is very surprising that Mauritius is one of the most densely populated and mixed cultural countries in the world. Even though it has no indigenous people, it has a 400-year-history of settlers. The first settlers were the Dutch in the 17th century. The reality is that the complex ethnic composition of the Mauritian population has been a cause of classification and recognition of individual communities. Mauritius is a multicultural nation. Though there is no explicit racial discrimination, ethnic discrimination exists in indirect forms. For the 46 years of its independence, every successive government of Mauritius has kept struggling for Mauritian-ness, and tried to create and strengthen a sense of national belonging. There is powerful state discourse on this, for example, in the 12 March Independence Day Celebrations. Civil society is also engaged in this endeavour to create a sense of Mauritian-ness. In this paper, through Mutiny, a novel written by South African born Mauritian writer Lindsey Collen, we will see the reality of Mauritius far from its glossy representation as in Tourist brochures.

      • Comparison of Two Different Smoke Extraction Schemes of Transversely Ventilated Tunnel Fire

        Rie, Dong-Ho,Kim, Hyung-Taek,Yoo, Ji-Oh,Shin, Hyun-Jun,Yoon, Sung-Wook The Korean Society of Safety 2005 International Journal of Safety Vol.4 No.2

In case of tunnel fire, one of the most effective facilities to save lives is the smoke control system. In this study, two different smoke extraction schemes of transversely ventilated tunnel were compared. One is the smoke extraction using the fixed exhaust ports on the false ceiling to achieve the uniform and distributed smoke extraction (uniform exhaust). The other is that using the remote controlled smoke extraction where only vents close to the fire is opened whereas the others are closed to enhance the limitation of the smoke spread (localized exhaust). A number of numerical simulations were performed to find out the optimal smoke extraction rate at each smoke extraction scheme to allow the tunnel users to escape to the safe area without endangering their lives by smoke.

      • Exploring Japanese University EFL Teacher Motivation

Vol.18 No.1

Current studies show that it is becoming clear that language teachers give significant importance to learners`` motivation level, interest levels, and attitudes toward their learning. Motivated teachers can have a powerful influence on students` career directions, and positively impact learners` motivations and interests. However, not many studies have been conducted on teachers` motivation. This teachers` motivation research focuses on teachers` career history, job satisfaction levels, and what university English teachers value in their teaching jobs. In this study, the researcher is attempting to explore factors which enhance and affect university English teachers` motivation in detail. It investigates teacher motivation through quantitative research utilizing questionnaires with six Likert scale questions to explore what teachers experience on a daily basis and throughout their teaching career, both inside and outside of their classrooms. It was found that Japanese university EFL teachers tend to seek intrinsic needs and wants such as autonomy, self-growth, and seeing students` growth through daily interaction in English classes. The results suggest that inner psychological aspects of motivation can be a powerful source of motivation. At the same time, they seek job security most among many extrinsic factors. It implies that working conditions, especially hiring conditions regarding the contract, such as whether they are hired as part time or full time, tenured or contract, dynamically affect teachers` motivation when seeing their career as a lifelong career in their profession.

Investigation of EFL Teachers" Career and Motivation at Universities in Japan

Vol.17 No.2

Motivation is one of the most popular topics on language teaching and learning. Many studies on language learning focus on students`` motivation; however, teachers`` motivation is easily overlooked in the area of the applied linguistics field. In this paper, the researcher presents a study to investigate how satisfied English teachers at private universities in Japan are with their work as English instructors. In this study, the researcher created questionnaires and conducted a survey of thirty English teachers at private universities in Japan. This study shows the perception and the degree of satisfaction in their jobs. The study vividly shows what the most significant obstacles are as well as approaches to solve the problems. The researcher asked participants what significant aspect of teaching is included in their personal teaching philosophy. The major question the researcher was looking for was the following: what the reward was, what obstacles existed, and what possible solutions were for the problematic aspects in the field. Overall, this study clearly provides the reader a clearer idea of what motivates teachers and how closely it is related to their productivity in their daily teaching.
