Review of Safety Activity Process for Safety Enhancement of Railway Signaling System
Hwang, Jong-Gyu The Korean Society of Safety 2011 International Journal of Safety Vol.10 No.2
As safety-related regulations for signaling systems are standardized to IEC 61508 and 62425, and others at the international level, safety activities and its verification are required. And also there is need to develop technologies for safety improvement to secure safety signaling systems in terms of technologies for safety activities on each life-cycle. In this paper it is reviewed the safety activity processes and technologies each steps of proposed processes respectively for railway signaling systems.
A Study on the Better Operation of Occupational Safety and Health Management Systems
Choi, Jae-Wook,Yoon, Seok-J.,Lee, Gwan-Hyung,Yang, H.S. The Korean Society of Safety 2005 International Journal of Safety Vol.4 No.1
This study was conducted to identity the characteristics of occupational health and safety management systems around the world, to survey the implementation of OHSMS in Korean companies, to find problems and corrective measures, and to understand the opinions of top management about OHSMS. Questionnaires on the operation of occupational health and safety management systems in Korean manufacturing companies were carried out. Occupational health and safety management systems around the world, including OHSAS 18001, BS8800, KOSHA 18001, VPP, J-OHSMS, were reviewed. In order to implement an occupational health and safety management system successfully, it was found that the management should consider occupational health and safety as important, provide employees with necessary training, and have a strong commitment to occupational health and safety.
A Safety Analysis of a Steam Generator Module Pipe Break for the SMART-P
Kim Hee Kyung,Chung Young-Jong,Yang Soo-Hyung,Kim Hee-Cheol,Zee Sung-Quun The Korean Society of Safety 2004 International Journal of Safety Vol.3 No.1
SMART-P is a promising advanced small and medium category nuclear power reactor. It is an integral type reactor with a sensible mixture of new innovative design features and proven technologies aimed at achieving a highly enhanced safety and improved economics. The enhancement of the safety and reliability is realized by incorporating inherent safety improving features and reliable passive safety systems. The improvement in the economics is achieved through a system simplification, and component modularization. Preliminary safety analyses on selected limiting accidents confirm that the inherent safety improving design characteristics and the safety system of SMART-P ensure the reactor's safety. SMART-P is an advanced integral pressurized water reactor. The purpose of this study is for the safety analysis of the steam generator module pipe break for the SMART-P. The integrity of the fuel rod is the major criteria of this analysis. As a result of this analysis, the safety of the RCS and the secondary system is guaranteed against the module pipe break of a steam generator of the SMART-P.
Kang, Young-Ra,Kim, Tae-Gu,Lee, Keun-Won The Korean Society of Safety 2006 International Journal of Safety Vol.5 No.1
In laboratories, researchers frequently work using new methods with new tools and materials. So the workers in laboratories are exposed to risk from dangerous articles all the time. In the case of university laboratories, testing is done by the individual at night. Because of that, the risks in university laboratories are higher than in other places. In addition, students and managers in universities generally have little concern for laboratory safety. So students are sometimes injured or killed in laboratory accidents. In this study, 1,000 university students answered questions about university laboratory safety. Their answers have been analyzed to determine the state of actual conditions and to formulate countermeasures. The results indicate that we need to change the safety awareness of the universities and the students. Adequate safety training and safe practice must be implemented by each university to decrease accidents. Development of systematic safety training program suited to the specific conditions of the individual laboratory and formulation of specific counter plans should accidents occur are required.
Safety Assessment in Operation of Human-centered Robots - An Information-theoretic Approach
Choi, Gi-Heung The Korean Society of Safety 2006 International Journal of Safety Vol.5 No.2
Operations of human-centered robot, in general, facilitates the creation of new process that may potentially harm the human operators. Design of safety-guaranteed operation of human-centered robots is, therefore, important since it determines the ultimate outcomes of operations involving safety of human operators. This study discusses the application of information-theoretic measures to safety assessment of human-centered robotic operations. Some examples are given.

Design of manufacturing process, in general, facilitates the creation of new process that may potentially harm the workers. Design of safety-guaranteed manufacturing process is, therefore, very important since it determines the ultimate outcomes of manufacturing activities involving safety of workers. This study discusses application of information-theoretic measure (entropy) to safety assessment of manufacturing processes. The idea is based on the general principles of design and their applications. Some examples are given.

Performances of the Directional Control Solenoid Valve for a Combined Power Plant
Kim, Chul-Jin,Yun, Yu-Seong,Kim, Do-Tae,Lee, Il-Young The Korean Society of Safety 2012 International Journal of Safety Vol.11 No.2
Recently, the combined power plants are refocused rapidly as a replaceable energy system of the nuclear power plant. The large turbine is revolved highly at 1800~3600 rpm. Thus, the turbine speed should be monitored with mechanical and electrical method for a safety. The electrical cutoff valve which blocks the flow channel with the electrical signal is with a built in. The aim of this study is to develop a manufacturing technology through by the localization of a solenoid actuated directional control valve. Especially the results show performances of the solenoid valve by the experiments and modeling and the reliability estimation. Applied load port pressure was changed rapidly on the form of a quadratic curve over time. And in the cases of square waveform when 0~100 V and 20~120 V input voltage, it was driven on a stable state until 13.4 Hz and 16.6 Hz, respectively. We think that this study will give useful data for the electricity safety system of the combined power plant gas turbine.

This paper describes the work and results of the preliminary Probabilistic Safety Assessment (PSA) for a research reactor in the design phase. This preliminary PSA was undertaken to assess the level of safety for the design of a research reactor and to evaluate whether it is probabilistically safe to operate and reliable to use. The scope of the PSA described here is a Level 1 PSA which addresses the risks associated with core damage. After reviewing the documents and its conceptual design, eight typical initiating events are selected regarding internal events during the normal operation of the reactor. Simple fault tree models for the PSA are developed instead of the detailed model at this conceptual design stage. A total of 32 core damage accident sequences for an internal event analysis were identified and quantified using the AIMS-PSA. LOCA-I has a dominant contribution to the total CDF by a single initiating event. The CDF from the internal events of a research reactor is estimated to be 7.38E-07/year. The CDF for the representative initiating events is less than 1.0E-6/year even though conservative assumptions are used in reliability data. The conceptual design of the research reactor is designed to be sufficiently safe from the viewpoint of safety.
Choi, Gi-Heung The Korean Society of Safety 2007 International Journal of Safety Vol.6 No.1
Operation of human-centered robot, in general, facilitates the creation of new process that may potentially harm the human operators. Design of safety-guaranteed operation of human-centered robots is, therefore, important since it determines the ultimate outcomes of operations involving safety of human operators. This study discusses the application of geometric tolerance and head injury criteria to safety assessment of human-centered robotic operations. Examples show that extending "Work Area" has more significant effect on the uncertainty in safety than extending the system range in the presence of velocity control.
