        Domestic Violence in Urban Filipino Families

        The magnitude and characteristics of domestic violence in an urban community in the Philippines are described in this paper, using an ecological framework that tried to link individual, family and community factors. In particular, this study has sought to determine the prevalence of domestic violence and establish significant associations among identified risk factors and violence perpetrated by spouses in urban Filipino families. A random community survey was conducted among ever-partnered women aged 15-49 years and residing in selected barangays in Paco, Manila. The WorldSAFE (World Studies of Abuse in Family Environment) standardized instrument and field methods, translated and pre-tested in Tagalog, were used to collect the data. Information was gathered via interviews conducted by trained enumerators. The results indicate that 47.2 percent of thewomen respondents had experienced psychological and physical violence at the hands of their intimate partners during their lifetimes.Twenty-nine percent experienced domestic violence perpetrated by their current partners in the past year. Of the latter, about 31 percent suffered physical maltreatment and 68 percent experienced psycho- logical abuse. The leading types of physical maltreatment were repeated slapping, kicking and beating, even during pregnancy. Major psychological abuse included insulting, belittling and use of threats. Recommendations have been made to strengthen current programs to assist women victims of domestic violence. Future research should focus on the evaluation of these interventions.

      • Regime Transition and the Chinese Politics of Technology: From Mass Science to the Controlled Internet

        The article employs the concepts of the politics of technology and regime transition foranalysing the connection between political power and the application of technology incontemporary Chinese history. Examining the Maoist policy of ‘mass science’ and thecontemporary Chinese Communist Party (CCP) policies on information and communicationtechnologies, and Internet control, shows how regime-determined policy goals, namelysocial transformation and political security, have been reflected in the politics of technologyduring the Maoist and the post-Maoist eras. Through this examination, the article showshow controlling technologies has always been closely connected to the political order in Chinaand how this diagramof power has changed through time. The transition froma totalitarianto a post-totalitarian political order has shifted the Chinese politics of technology from thehard core of the political order to its protective belt. Accordingly, the criteria set for allowedforms of technology have been reduced from theMaoist plural must-nots to the single mustnot:technology must not be allowed to jeopardize the position of the CCP as the exclusiveholder of the ultimate political power in China. Still, maintaining a post-totalitarianautocratic system requires engaging in a distinct type of politics of technology.

        Making Visible Young Children`s Identities through an Ethnographic Perspective

        Three telling cases by each of the authors are presented to demonstrate how an ethnographic perspective makes visible young children`s; (1) multiple identities and the many roles they enact in their lives and (2) co-construction of their knowledge from the resources available to them. Telling Case One: "The Storytelling Project" examines African American children`s written and oral narratives in preschool and kindergarten classrooms located in a low socio-economic urban community in the southeast region of the United States. Telling Case Two: “Narrative practices of Deaf & Hearing Students” explores how intertextuality influences the narrative practices of young deaf children in two kindergarten classrooms. And, Telling Case Three: "Large Group Meeting time" examines children`s and teacher`s interactions and various meaning making within and across their everyday large group meetings and classroom experiences. Findings from these three telling cases have implications for how curriculum affords or constrains children`s identities and the resources they use to construct their learning.

        To mix or not to mix: unifying the creative process in composing for instruments and electronics

        다양한 전자적 요소와 결합된 기기와 악기로 이루어지는 음악 및 사운드 아트 공연을 디자인하고 구성하는데에는 여러 광범위한 기술과 지식이 요구된다. 이러한 혼합된 음악Mixed music 작품을 창작할 수 있도록 젊은 실행자들을 안내하는 교육적 접근 방식은 기존의 교육 방식에서는 거의 고려되지 않았던 부분들까지 포괄하여 작곡가가 많은 연습과 다양한 기술을 익히면서 필수적인 실력과 경험을 갖추기 위해 고군분투해야 하는 과제에 맞서있다. 혼합 음악의 범위, 혼합 음악의 연구, 혼합 음악을 가르치기 위한 교육학적 접근법, 혼합 음악 창작과 관련된 스킬과 역할에 대하여 논의한다. 혼합 음악을 가르치거나 배우고, 창작하는 데 연관된 문제점들을 개괄적으로 살펴보고 고찰해 보는 것을 목표로 한다. The design and composition of music and sound art performance that involves instruments in combination with a variety of electronic components demands a diverse and extensive skill and knowledge set. Pedagogical approaches that guide young practitioners in the creation of “mixed music” composition confront the challenge of striving to equip the composer with the necessary skills and experience drawn from many diverse practices and technologies, some of which are rarely considered in conventional pedagogical contexts. Categories of mixed music, mixed music studies, pedagogical approaches to the teaching of mixed music, and the skills and roles involved in mixed music production are discussed. The objective is to provide a global overview and consideration of the issues involved in teaching, learning and creating mixed music.

      • Development of the Australian Maritime College PC Based Machinery Space Simulator

        The development of a PC based machinery space simulator for training and research is described. Development goals targeted the usefulness of the system for both training and R&D work. These included a distributed client/server architecture for 1-1 or 1-many client simulation operation, complete separation of visual elements from the controlling routines and the ability to work on the mathematical model (fully compileable source) independent of the controller and visual systems. A graphical interface has been developed and the mathematical model has been updated. NOx emissions and the effect of NOx control measures are simulated. Variable fuel combustion quality can be simulated. The use of the PC based simulator for training of sea going engineers and its relevance to STCW-95 is discussed. The use of the PC based simulator for undergraduate and graduate project work is also discussed.

        풍부한 양질의 다문화 문학 경험은유아들이 자신과 타인에 대해 더 깊이 이해하게 한 다. 유아들은 다문화 문학에서 다양한 삶과 세계, 다양한 사람들에 대한 경험을 통해 인간 의 유사점과 차이점에 관한 자신들의 호기심을 충족시킨다. 다문화 문학과 문학 관련 활동 이 발달에 적합한 방법으로 교육과정 안에 녹아졌을 때 유아들은 다양한 사람들의 유사점 과 차이점을 안다. 또한 유아들은 유사점과 차이점의 가치를 안다. 유아를 위한 다문화 문학은 학급에서 상당히 중요한 역할을 한다. 피부색, 종교, 문화, 장애, 나이 등에 관한(Harris, 1997) 다문화 문학은 유아들의 문화 간 이해 발달에 중요한 역할을 한다. 인종, 가족 구조, 가치 있는 것, 종교, 사회경제적 위치 등이 점점 더 복잡한 사 회가 되기 때문에(Anderson, 2006) 이런 문화적․언어적 다양성은 모든 사람이 알아야 한다. 양질의 다문화 문학은 유아들에게 다른 문화 뿐 아니라 자신의 문화에 대한 이해와 존 중감도 증진시킨다. Hazel Rochman(1993)은 자신의 책 Against Borders에서 다문화 문학 의 전반적인 목적을 설명한다.

        From Eire to Iërè : Mythology and Science Fiction Metaphors in W.B. Yeats and Anthony Joseph

        아일랜드의 모더니스트 시인 W.B. 예이츠와 트리니다드 출신의 영국흑인 시인 안소니 조세프와의 비교는 예외적일 수 있다. 예이츠는 핵심적 하이 모더니스트 시인들 중 하나이며, 조세프는 당대 “영국 흑인” 문학의 아방가르드적 변두리의 혼합장르 작가로 인식되고 있다. 그러나, 이 두 사람은, 특정 기법의 사용, 주제, 신화와 과학적 은유와 결부된 목표 등을 비교하면, 의외의 공통점이 나타난다. 이런 공통점은 모더니스트와 포스트모더니스트의 서정시의 가능성을 확장시켜 전통적 장르의 구분을 뛰어넘게 한다. It may seem unexpected to compare the Modern Irish poet W.B. Yeats with the postmodern Trinidadian Black British poet Anthony Joseph. Yeats is widely regarded as one of the central canonical figures of “high modernism,” while Joseph is associated with mixed genre writing on the avant-garde margins of contemporary “black British” literature. However, when these figures are examined comparatively for their uses of some of the features, themes, and purposes often connected to the myths and metaphors of science fiction, unexpected correspondences emerge. These similarities also expand our views of the capacity of the modern and postmodern lyric poetry to transcend conventional genre boundaries.
