      • Change and Continuity in the Political Attitudes of Canadian University Students, 1986-2011

        While Political Science is taught at nearly every university in Canada, little is known about the political attitudes of the Canadian students actually taking courses in the discipline. Beyond anecdotal evidence based largely on personal impressions, there has been no other indicator to gauge our students’ political dispositions and preferences, especially over an extended period of time. We shed some light on this issue by presenting the findings of a survey of first-year students taking an introductory course in Political Science at [name withheld for blind review]. Spanning over 25 years from 1986 to 2011, the survey and its findings provide a useful window into the evolving pattern of political attitudes among our first-year students, which include, among others: ideological inclinations, both self-identified and more objectively measured; party preferences; views on Quebec separatism; support for Canada’s international activism; attitudes toward the US; and assessment of international economic openness.

        Fat Phobia in Matsuura Rieko’s “Himantai kyo fusho”

        This essay examines discursive representations of the fat female body in Matsuura Rieko’s short story “Himantai kyo fusho” or “Fat Phobia.” Following an interdisciplinary consideration of fatness based in gender theory, this essay contextualizes Matsuura’s story in a cross-cultural discussion of gender and body size in Japan and the West. One goal of the essay is to add dimension to scholarly interest in gender, the body, and body discrimination by elucidating the ways in which Matsuura’s text reproduces prejudicial stereotypes about women of size. The essay ultimately argues that “Himantai kyo fusho,” published in 1980, anticipates, and attempts to combat, the contemporary stigmatization of the fat female body in Japan. Because the thin protagonist must overcome her own prejudices regarding fat women, the text provides a timely reminder of the importance of acceptance. At the same time, it underscores the necessity of allies to advocate on behalf of marginalized and discriminated identities.

        Time Dependent Particle Emission From Fission Products

        Decay heating following nuclear fission is an important factor in the design of nuclear facilities; impacting a variety of aspects ranging from cooling requirements to shielding design. Calculations of decay heat, often assumed to be a simple product of activity and average decay product energy, are complicated by the so called ``pandemonium effect.'' Elucidated in the 1970?셲 this complication arises from beta-decays feeding high-energy nuclear levels; redistributing the available energy between betas and gammas. Increased interest in improving the theoretical predictions of decay probabilities has been, in part, motivated by the recent experimental effort utilizing the Total Absorption Gamma-ray Spectrometer (TAGS) to determine individual beta-decay transition probabilities to individual nuclear levels. Accurate predictions of decay heating require a detailed understanding of these transition probabilities, accurate representation of particle decays as well as reliable predictions of temporal inventories from fissioning systems. We will discuss a recent LANL effort to provide a time dependent study of particle emission from fission products through a combination of Quasiparticle Random Phase Approximation (QRPA) predictions of beta-decay probabilities, statistical Hauser-Feshbach techniques to obtain particle and gamma-ray emissions in statistical Hauser-Feshbach and the nuclear inventory code, CINDER.

        The Benefits of Sales Force Automation Explored: An Empirical Examination of SFA Usage on Relationship Quality and Performance

        Sales force automation (SFA) technologies are increasingly used to support customer relationship management (CRM) strategies. However, the popular press reports mixed results among companies incorporating SFA technologies and the previous studies have less interested in relationship quality between sales person and customer as an outcome of SFA. Actually the improved quality of the salesperson-customer relationship may be the most important outcome of SFA usage. This outcome is especially meaningful in today's marketplace given the increasing focus placed on customer retention and other customer related performance such as customer lifetime value. Therefore, this study seeks to further examine the impact of SFA usage within two different firms using SFA technologies to examine the impact of SFA usage on both customer relationship quality and sales performance. Additionally, the moderating roles of perceived managerial support and salesperson experience on the outcomes of SFA usage are examined. The results shows that direct effect of SFA usage on performance was not significant but highlight the mediating role of customer relationship quality in the SFA usage - sales performance relationship. Also, this research examines a number of moderating effects of both management supports for SFA and salesperson's sales work experience. The results indicate that management support has a significant direct influence on relationship quality and salesperson performance, but not a significant moderating effect on the relationship between SFA usage and the outcomes (relationship quality and performance). Thus moderating effects were not supported but find significant main effects. First of all, finding of this study suggest that a formula for successful SFA implementation must be one that highlights a SFA usage → relationship quality → sales performance sequence. This means when sales person use SFA they must build relationship with customer first then will return some long term performance. Second, the implications of not considering the introduction of big technology initiatives in terms of fit within the company's culture, strategy, structure, and environment may in many cases be quite noteworthy. Therefore, the launching of a new technology in the firm, such as SFA, may have a nonlinear impact upon overall firm performance, depending on the presence of other complimentary resources and capabilities. Finally the authors offer a number of implications for research and practice, and suggest directions for future SFA research that may further improve our understanding of this increasingly relevant topic.

        Effects of Agave Nectar Versus Sucrose on Weight Gain, Adiposity, Blood Glucose, Insulin, and Lipid Responses in Mice

        Agave nectar is a fructose-rich liquid sweetener derived from a plant, and is often promoted as a low glycemic alternative to refined sugar. However, little scientific research has been conducted in animals or humans to determine its metabolic and/or health effects. The aim of this study was to explore the influence of agave nectar versus sucrose on weight gain, adiposity, fasting plasma blood glucose, insulin, and lipid levels. Eighteen (n = 18) male ICR mice (33.8 – 1.6 g) were divided into two groups (n = 6 for agave nectar and n = 12 for sucrose) and provided free access to one of two diets of equal energy densities differing only in a portion of the carbohydrate provided. Diets contained 20% carbohydrate (by weight of total diet) from either raw agave nectar or sucrose. Epididymal fat pads were excised, and blood was collected after 34 days. Weight gain (4.3 – 2.2 vs. 8.4 – 3.4 g), fat pad weights (0.95 – 0.54 vs. 1.75 – 0.66 g), plasma glucose (77.8 – 12.2 vs. 111.0 – 27.9 mg/dL), and insulin (0.61 – 0.29 vs. 1.46 – 0.81 ng/mL) were significantly lower (P £ .05) for agave nectar-fed mice compared to sucrose-fed mice respectively. No statistically significant differences in total cholesterol or triglycerides were detected. These results suggest that in comparison to sucrose, agave nectar may have a positive influence on weight gain and glucose control. However, more research with a larger sample of animals and/or with human subjects is warranted.

        Leukotriene-related Gene Polymorphisms in Patients with Aspirin-intolerant Urticaria and Aspirin-intolerant Asthma:Differing Contributions of ALOX5 Polymorphism in Korean Population

        The pathogenesis of aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid, ASA)-intolerant urticaria (AIU) is still poorly understood but it has recently been suggested that it is associated with the overproduction of leukotriene (LT). This is supported by evidence that cyclooxy-genase 2 inhibitor is given safely to patients with AIU. The present study was designed to investigate the role of genetic polymorphism of LT related genes in the pathogen-esis of AIU via a case-control study. We screened single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in genes encoding enzymes involved in leukotriene synthesis in the Korean population with AIU (n=101), ASA-intolerant asthma (AIA, n=95) and normal healthy controls (n=123). Genotype was determined by primer extension reactions using the SNapShot ddNTP primer extension kit. Among 8 SNPs of four LT related genes, the polymorphism of ALOX5 at positions of -1708 G>A showed significant difference in genotype frequency between AIU and AIA (p=0.01). Furthermore, there were significant differences observed in the frequencies of two ALOX5 haplotypes between the AIU group and AIA group (p<0.05). However, there were no differences in allele, genotype, or haplotype frequencies of ALOX5 between the AIU group and the nor-mal control group. These results suggested that ALOX5 has a differing contribution in two major clinical pathogenesis related to ASA-sensitivity.

        Experiments on locally dented conical shells under axial compression

        Steel conical shells have long been used in various parts of different structures. Sensitivity to the initial geometrical imperfection has been one of the most significant issues on the stability of these structures, which has made them highly vulnerable to the buckling. Most attention has been devoted to structures under normal fabrication related imperfections. Notwithstanding, the challenges of large local imperfections- herein as dent-shaped imperfections - have not been a focus yet for these structures. This study aims to provide experimental data on the effect of such imperfections on the buckling capacity of these shells under axial compression. The results show changes in the buckling mode and the capacity for such damaged thin specimens as is outlined in this paper, with an average overall capacity reduction of 11%.

        Using Locally Pre-stressed Reinforcing Bars to Restore the Capacity of Severely Damaged Steel Beams

        This paper investigates the behaviour of damaged steel beams repaired using locally pre-stressed reinforcing steel bars. Regular reinforcing bars are welded to the beam’s web at both ends and then pretensioned using a manual screw jack to increasethe effectiveness of the repair. Six beams with different bar diameters and levels of pre-stress were repaired and tested underthree-points bending. Results showed that the level of pre-stress controlled the beams’ stiffness, while restoration of theirultimate load-carrying capacity was governed by the bar size. Significantly higher repaired capacities were achieved by thismethod than by other published methods used for the strengthening of steel beams.

        박막형 ZnGa₂O₄:Mn 산화물 형광체의 음극선루미느센스와 구조적 특성에 관한 연구

        본 연구에서는 박막형 ZnGa₂O₄:Mn 산화물 형광체의 음극선루미느센스 특성과 구조적 성질에 대하여 field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), photoluminescence (PL), 그리고 cathodoluminescence (CL) 방법을 이용하여 조사하였다. ZnGa₂O₄:Mn 형광체 타겟으로부터 Mn²? 이온의 ⁴T₁ → ?A₁ 전이에 의한 506㎚ 파장에서의 PL emission 스펙트럼이 관찰되었다. 색좌표는 x = 0.09, y = 0.67 이었다. ZnGa₂O₄:Mn 박막의 여기 스펙트럼은 Mn²? 이온 흡수에 의한 294 ㎚의 피크 파장을 나타내었다. 낮은 압력에서 증착한 ZnGa₂O₄:Mn 형광체 박막은 고밀도의 치밀한 단면구조를 보였고, 높은 세기의 음극선루미느센스가 505 ㎚ 피크 파장에서 나타났다. 표면 거칠기가 음극선루미느센스의 세기에 미치는 영향은 관찰되지 않았다. In this study we have investigated cathodoluminescence (CL) and structural properties of thin film ZnGa₂O₄:Mn oxide phosphor by using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), photoluminescence (PL), and cathodoluminescence. PL emission peaked at 506 ㎚ was observed from the ZnGa₂O₄:Mn phosphor target and it was attributed to the ⁴T₁ - ?A₁ transition in Mn²? ion. The color coordinates of the emission were x = 0.09 and y = 0.67. The ZnGa₂O₄:Mn films showed the excitation spectrum peaked at 294 ㎚ by Mn²? ion absorption. It was found that the higher intensity of CL emission at 505 ㎚ appears to result from the denser and closely-packed structure in ZnGa₂O₄:Mn phosphor films deposited at lower pressures. The CL intensity did not show any systematic dependence on film surface roughness.
