The hyperthermia treatment has been operated to the patients that have cancer cell in their inside and has been improved for selectivity of killing the cancer cells gradually. The radio-frequency(RF) hyperthermia has been considered as an alternative medical treatment of tumor necrosis by application of heating to enhance the efficacy of the existing cancer treatments. Because the hyperthermia treatment treats cancer by heat, it is important that the operator check states of patients like temperature distributions. Unless thermocouples are inserted to the patients, it is hard to know the states. In this study, SAR (Specific Absorption Rate) inside a body was obtained by electrical simulation assuming the RF treatment. The corresponding body temperature distribution was simulated and visualized by solving heat conduction equation with plugging the SAR for the RF hyperthermia treatment. Then, the simulation on optimizing position of electrode was conducted.

A Fatigue Life Analysis of Wheels on Guideway Vehicle using Multibody Dynamics

A guideway vehicle is used in automobile, semiconductor and LCD manufacturing industries to transport products efficiently. Since the operating speed of the guideway vehicle should be increased for maximum productivity, the weight of the vehicle has to be reduced, and this weight reduction may cause a failure of a part in the system. Therefore, the estimation of the fatigue life of the parts becomes an important problem. In this study, the fatigue life of the wheels in the guideway vehicle is estimated using an S-N curve. To obtain the fatigue life of a part, the S-N curve, the dynamic stress time history applied to the part, and the material property of the part are required. The S-N curve of the driving wheel is obtained from the fatigue experiment on wheels. To obtain the material properties of the driving wheel, which is composed of aluminum with urethane coating, the result of a compression hardware test and static analysis of the wheel’s FE model are used. The dynamic stress time history influencing the driving wheel can be obtained from linear superposition of the dynamic load time history and the static stress. The dynamic load time history is estimated by multibody dynamic analysis, and the static stress is obtained by finite element analysis.
B형 간염 바이러스 만성 감염자에 있어서의 혈청 Interleukin-18의측정 및 유용성

Background : The aim of our study was to investigate the diagnostic value of interleukin-18 (IL-18) and other cytokines in chronic liver disease patients with hepatitis B virus (HBV), including chronic hepatitis B infection (CHB), liver cirhhosis (LC) with HBV, and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with HBV. Methods : Serum levels of IL-18, interferon-gamma (INF-gamma), IL-4 and tumor necrosis factoralpha (TNF-alpha) were evaluated using ELISA in 87 patients with liver diseases with HBV (asymptomatic carriers, 9; CHB, 19; LC, 40; and HCC, 19), 13 patients with non-hepatic diseases (NHD), and 9 normal controls. Results : Serum IL-18 levels of CHB, LC with HBV and HCC with HBV patients were higher than those of healthy controls and asymptomatic carriers (P<0.05). Serum IFN-gamma and IL-4 levels were not significantly increased in all groups, but TNF-alpha levels were increased in LC and HCC patients (P<0.05). Conclusions : Determination of IL-18 may be useful in assessing the severity and predicting the prognosis of liver dieases with HBV. (Korean J Lab Med 2004; 24: 139-45) 배경 : 저자들은 B형 간염 바이러스가 양성인 만성 간질환, 즉 만성 B형 간염, 간경화, 간세포암 환자군에서 IL-18 및 여러 cytokine의 혈청 농도 값을 알아내고 그 진단적 유용성을 알아보 고자 하였다. 방법 : 효소면역법(enzyme linked immunosorbent assay: ELISA)을 이용하여 87명의 HBV 양성 간질환 환자들(무증상 보유자 9, 만성 B형 간염 19, 간경화 40, 간세포암 환자 19), 13명의 비-간장성 질병 환자들 및 9명의 건강 대조군을 대상으로 혈청 IL-18, interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma), IL-4, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha)의 농도를 분석하였다. 결과 : 혈청 IL-18 농도는 만성 B형 간염, HBV 양성 간경화, HBV 양성 간암 환자 군에서 건강 대조군 및 무증상 보유자 군보다 상승되었다(P<0.05). 혈청 IFN-gamma 및 IL-4는 각 군에서 유의한 증가를 보이지 않았고, TNF-alpha는 간경화 및 간암 군에서 HBV 무증상 보유자 군보다 유의하게 증가되었다(P<0.05). 결론 : 혈청 IL-18의 측정은 HBV 양성 간질환의 중등도 평가 및 예후 예측에 있어 유용할 수도 있다.

Despite efforts to control the spread of malaria, the disease persists in certain parts of the world. Moreover, there has been a resurgence of the disease recently. Another protozoan disease, babesiosis is a disease of animals; Humans are infected only incidentally, and when they are infected, they develop a nonspecific febrile illness. Babesia organism enters red blood cells and resembles malaria parasites, thus posing a problem in the differential diagnosis. We encountered an imported case of mixed infection of malaria and babesia. The patient was a 20-year old Korean male who had been in Saong-dume near Gabon for 3 months. We treated him with chloroquine with the diagnosis of Plasmodium malariae infection, but fever recurred after 2 weeks of the treatment. The second peripheral blood smear findings revealed specific ring forms of Babesia spp, so we changed to quinine and clindamycin. The treatment was successful and the patient was well after 4 months of follow-up period.
