Towards Liberalizing Laws on Homosexuality and Social Discourse : A Comparative Analysis of Newspapers in Taiwan and South Korea

How laws on homosexuality impact its social acceptance remains a pertinent question. Although there is a global trend towards liberalizing laws related to homosexuality, punitive measures still persist in many countries. This study analyzes the social discourse of Taiwan and Korea, two societies with different levels of institutional protection of homosexuality. Changes in themes depicted in newspaper articles revealed changes in the two societies’ social discourse before and after the judicial decision to legislate same-sex marriage during Tsai Ing-wen’s first term (2016-2020) in Taiwan and the attempt to legislate an anti-discrimination law during the Moon Jae-in’s presidency in Korea (2017-2022). Since this institutional intervention, both societies’ newspaper coverage on inclusive themes relating to homosexuality within civil society and political leaders have increased. However, negative and hostile themes have not changed significantly, but to varying degrees. Furthermore, this study confirms each society’s unique national context. In particular, foreign legal precedent and China were discussed in Taiwan, confirming that related discourse is somewhat linked to its legalization of same-sex marriage. On the other hand, most of the Korean discourse was aimed to confirm politicians' stances on homosexuality, which was also closely related to the military's anti-homosexuality criminal law and opposition from conservative Christian organizations. This study revealed social changes through an exploratory research of social discourse related to homosexuality during transitional periods. The result emphasizes the pivotal role of the political elites in promoting social acceptance of homosexuality, and empirically reveals the need for a combined legislation and judicial decision when dealing with legislation pertaining to homosexuality, as demonstrated in Taiwan’s case.

Unspeakable to Speakable Truth:Transitional Justice Process of April 3 Events

How does an institutionalized permanent truth commission influence the social discourse? The unspeakable truth of the April 3 Events had long been buried under South Korea’s authoritarian regimes, but the state’s democratization brought momentum for a new socio-political environment. This paper provides empirical findings of the truth commission’s contribution to promoting an open discussion of the April 3 Events in society by capturing the overall discourse transformation of the events through content analysis of newspapers, dated between 1997 and 2020 at the national and local level. It argues that the long-term transitional justice process, mainly led by the Truth Commission, was effective in promoting the open discussion of diverse aspects of the April 3 Events, a previously unspeakable topic to the speakable. However, the social discourses eventually developed into distinctive patterns at each level: the local level demonstrated a narrow approach and institutionalized aspect of transitional justice, taking up 88 percent of the entire newspaper coverage, while the national level displayed a broader approach.

할리우드의 제국주의적 응시 : 영화 <미나리>를 중심으로

본 논문은 미국이 비영어권 영화를 할리우드 주류로 수용하는 문화제국주의적 방식의 측면에서 영화 <미나리>(2020)를 고찰한다. 2021년, 제93회 아카데미 시상식은 지난해 영화 <기생충>에 주요 4개 부문의 상을 모두 수여한 이례적행보를 이어가며, 할머니 순자 역으로 분한 한국의 배우 윤여정에게 여우조연상을 안겼다. 이는 표면적으로 할리우드식 전형성의 탈피, 포스트 트럼프 시대의문화적 다양성 추구, 탈국경성과 영화산업의 세계화로 해석될 여지가 분명히 있다. 그러나 필자는 그 이면에 할리우드로 대표되는 미국 문화산업이 <기생충> (2019), <미나리> 등 비영어권 영화에 아카데미 수상이라는 영예를 부여하며스스로를 ‘Generous Judge’ 즉 관대한 심사자의 위치, 타문화를 미국의 기준으로 평가하고 예술적 지위를 부여하며 문화제국으로서의 입지를 더욱 공고히 하고자 하는 열망이 포착된다고 주장할 것이다. 또 하나 주목할 점은 미나리에 대한 미국 관객과 영화계의 관심과 호감이 유독 할머니 순자를 향해 있다는 점이다. 순자는 같은 해 아카데미 작품상, 감독상, 여우주연상을 수상한 미국 로컬 시네마 <노매드랜드>(2020)의 펀이 그려내는 백인 여성 캐릭터의 대척점에 서서<더 파더>(2020)에서 비춰지는 잃어버린 백인 남성의 주도권을 되찾으려는 욕망의 기표로서 작동한다. 본 논문은 할리우드가 문화 심사자의 위치에 서서 미국의 문화제국으로서의 입지를 확보하는데 기반이 되는 비영어권 영화 속 아시아 여성을 향한 제국주의적 응시와 남성적 응시의 공모를 분석하고 이를 통해백인 사회가 잃어버린 남성성을 아시아 여성의 타자화를 통해 되찾으려는 시도를 짚어본다.

Cinematic Fable and Ethical Issues: Centered on Inglourious Basterds

This article explores how self-reflexivity works as a means to deal with ethical issues involved with representing traumatic history, focusing on <Inglourious Basterds>. So far, there have been different cinematic discourses ― documentary, realism, modernism ― in reproducing historical trauma, each of which has faced ethical issues. Following the ethical problems with which documentary, realism and modernism films are respectively faced in reproducing historical trauma, self-reflexivity is suggested as an ethical attempt for mainstream films to overcome certain obstacles which existing discourses possess. Based on self-reflexivity, in order to surmount the ethical flaws which these discourses possess, a sub-genre is presented, which is coined ‘Cinematic fable’, addressing a new possibility in cinema dealing with historical trauma. It is made to be possible for cinema to establish a complete fictionality in cinematic fable, which makes the audience capable of completely distinguishing films from historical events. Within it, filmmakers can set up poetic justice, avoiding existing moral determination. Therefore, it can be said that the status of not only filmmakers but also spectators who can make their own moral judgment is acknowledged. Concentrating on <Inglourious Basterds>, how self-reflexivity can work to keep balance between ethics of representation and freedom of filmic expression will be explored. Specifically, in terms of cinematic form, it combines realism and modernism, thereby, complementing each other’s ethical flaws in this film.

고등학교 청소년의 건강증진행위 경험: 근거이론 적용

본 연구는 우리나라 고등학생의 건강증진행위 실천 경험을 이해하고 그 의미를 밝히는 것이다. 연구대상자는 자신의 경험을 충분히 표현할 수 있는 고등학생 12명을 편의표집 하였다. Strauss와 Corbin(1998)의 근거이론방법을 적용한 질적 연구이며, 참여자 진술로부터 312개의 의미 있는 문장을 도출하여 22개의 주제로 구분하여 13개로 범주화하였다. 연구결과, 중심현상은 '건강증진이 배제된 라이프스타일'이었으며, 이를 조율해 나가는 중재조건은 '부모님의 생활습관 지도', '건강행위를 함께 할 수 있는 친구', '운동시설 접근의 제약'이었으며 이를 대처하도록 고안된 작용/상호작용전략은 '건강증진 실천과 유지를 위한 의지 다지기', '멋진 몸매를 가진 친구를 모방하기', '부모님의 건강행동 배우기'로 나타났다. 이상의 결과들은 청소년의 건강증진행위 과정에 대한 본질을 이해하는데 도움이 될 것이며, 이를 통해 고등학생의 건강증진행위 실천을 위한 건강증진 프로그램 개발의 기초자료가 되길 기대한다. The purpose of this study was to understand and define the health-promotion behavior of adolescents in Korea. This study collected data from twelve high school students using group and individual in-depth interviews. Data were analyzed qualitative study with grounded theory method by Strauss and Corbin(1998). As for the study result, the core phenomenon was the Lifestyle without health promotion and the mediation conditions for controlling were Parents' Care for Health, Friends with Health Behavior, and lack of exercise environment, and the action/interection strategy to correspond to this situation was Strengthening the will to practice health promotion, Imitate a friend with a nice body, Learning parental health behavior. This study will serve as basic data in developing health promotion programs for the practice health promoting behaviors of high school students.

미용 전공 학생과 교수 사이의 라포(rapport)형성이 교육만족도, 학습성과, 재수강 의도에 미치는 영향

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of rapport formation between beauty major students and professors on educational satisfaction, Learning Outcomes, Retake Intent and to provide basic data for better positive relationship formation in the field of beauty education. In order to achieve this research purpose, a questionnaire was constructed for beauty majors residing in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province, and 50 preliminary surveys were conducted from April 15, 2022 to April 25, 2022. Afterwards, the unclear parts of the question and the vocabulary of the questions were corrected and supplemented, and 350 copies of the main survey were conducted from May 1, 2022 to May 25, 2022. As a result, 321 copies were collected, and 311 copies were used as final analysis data, excluding 10 copies with insincere responses. The collected survey data were analyzed through SPSS 21.0. The research results of this study are as follows. First, as for the demographic characteristics of the survey target, it was found that the majority of women in their twenties were hair majors. Second, Rapport factors, educational satisfaction factors, Learning Outcomes factors, Retake Intent factors appeared in a single dimension. Third, it was found that the higher the propensity for the rapport factor, the higher the educational satisfaction factor, Learning Outcomes factor, Retake Intent factor. The conclusion of this study is that the formation of rapport between beauty major students and professors has an positive effect on educational satisfaction, Learning Outcomes, Retake Intent. These results can serve as basic research data for preparing an educational program that can improve the formation of rapport in the relationship between beauty major students and professors. In addition, in the education conducted in the beauty industry field beyond the school beauty education field, the importance of forming a positive relationship through the formation of rapport between educators and trainees is recognized, and thus, It is believed that it can serve as a basis for present a realistic direction that can improve job satisfaction and work efficiency.
