특수교육분야 현상학적 질적연구의 동향 분석을 통한 방향 탐색

[Purpose] Phenomenological research can be applied to various fields of study in special education in terms of philosophy or methodology, and qualitative research using phenomenological research methods is also increasing in fact. In order to explore direction of phenomenological research, I would like to examine the research trends applying philosophical background and phenomenological methodology in the field of special education and suggest future direction. [Method] From 2005 to 2019, a total of 53 papers published in domestic journals were selected using phenomenological research methods. It was examined how the research topics, research purposes, philosophical and methodological background, data collection and analysis, and the application status of the phenomenological method were. [Results] First, when looking at the results of applying phenomenology to philosophical theory, most of the studies have explored the meaning of special education phenomena through participants’experiences or suggested directions for support. Only four studies applying phenomenology to philosophical theory. In the methodological aspect, many studies have not been clear about the background of phenomenological research. Interviews were mainly used for data collection, and data analysis showed a tendency to apply the methods suggested by domestic and foreign scholars. It has been found that studies that provide concrete methods for the phenomenological research method ‘phenomenological reduction' are very insufficient. [Conclusion] The direction of phenomenological qualitative research in the field of special education is as follows. First, the research subject and purpose should be expanded based on the philosophical orientation of phenomenology. Second, a proper understanding of phenomenological reduction is necessary. Third, the hermeneutic circulation method should be applied to the data collection and analysis process. Fourth, various types of phenomenological research should be applied. [목적] 현상학적 연구는 철학이나 방법론적 측면에서 특수교육분야에 다양한 연구 형태로 적용할 수 있으며 실제 현상학적 연구방법을 적용한 질적연구 또한 증가되고 있다. 이러한 현상학적 질적연구의 방향을 탐색하기 위해 특수교육분야에서 현상학의 철학적 배경 및 방법론을 적용한 연구 동향을 살펴보고 향후 방향을 제시해 보고자 한다. [방법] 2005년부터 2019년까지 현상학적 연구방법을 사용해 국내학술지에 발표된 질적연구 총 53편을 선정하여 연구주제, 연구목적, 철학적 배경, 방법론적 배경, 자료수집, 자료분석, 현상학적 연구방법 적용 현황을 살펴보았다. [결과] 먼저 현상학의 이론을 적용한 결과를 살펴보면, 참여자의 경험을 통해 특수교육 현상의 의미를 탐색하거나 지원방향을 제시한 연구가 대부분으로 현상학의 철학적 이론을 적용한 연구는 4편에 불과했다. 방법론적인 측면에서는 현상학적 질적연구를 실시한 배경이 명확하지 않은 연구가 많았다. 자료수집은 주로 면담을 이용하고 있었으며, 자료분석은 국내⋅외 학자들이 제시한 방법을 그대로 적용하는 경향이 두드러졌다. 현상학적 연구방법인 ‘현상학적 환원’에 대한 구체적인 방법을 제시한 연구는 매우 부족한 것으로 드러났다. [결론] 특수교육분야 현상학적 질적연구의 방향을 제시하면 첫째, 현상학의 철학적 지향을 바탕으로 연구주제와 목적을 확장해야 한다. 둘째, 현상학적 환원에 대한 바른 이해가 필요하다. 셋째, 자료수집 및 분석과정에서 해석학적 순환 방법을 적용해야 한다. 넷째, 다양한 현상학적 질적연구 유형을 적용해야 한다.

현상학적 질적연구 심사자를 위한 "현상학과 질적연구"

The level of phenomenological qualitative research has been steadily improving. Nonetheless, recent papers on phenomenological qualitative research still have some problems in terms of research procedures and methods. In order to overcome these problems, phenomenological qualitative researchers must have a strong consciousness of methodology when they carry out phenomenological qualitative researches. In addition, reviewers need to encourage researchers to revise manuscripts and upload it by pointing out problems related to research method in details. This study focuses on research procedures and methods with aims to investigate the identity of phenomenological qualitative research, identify problems related to research procedures and methods, and propose the mission of phenomenological qualitative reviewers. Reviewers should encourage researchers to revise manuscripts into a more complete phenomenological qualitative thesis by rectifying problematic research processes and methods. They should have an open-minded and creative attitude based on a thorough understanding of basic concepts of phenomenological qualitative research to contribute to the development of phenomenological qualitative research.

van Manen의 해석학적 현상학의 방법론적 탐구

Many researchers in South Korea showed strong interest in phenomenological qualitative research. In particular, Van Manen’s Hermeneutic Phenomenological Methodology has been applied as a traditional methodology of phenomenological qualitative research, to explore various themes. However, methodological research on the Hermeneutic Phenomenological Methodology is not sufficient. Therefore, this research is set to conceptualize the traits of Van Manen’s Hermeneutic Phenomenological Methodology. The research identified 4 key traits of Hermeneutic Phenomenological Methodology: first, an emphasis on anecdote unveiling its meaning; second, a revelation of the essential meaning structure of the experiences as an objective of research; third, an emphasis on interpretation and hermeneutics circle during the process of analysis; fourth, the actualization of phenomenological reduction as a trait of methodological process. This research focusing on the traits of Van Manen’s Hermeneutic Phenomenological Methodology is expected to help researchers who adapt his methodology to implement researches, apply more adequate and traditional hermeneutic phenomenology. van Manen의 해석학적 현상학은 현상학적 질적 연구의 한 전통으로 여타의 현상학적 질적 연구들과 마찬가지로 많은 연구자들이 이를 통해 다양한 주제들을 탐구하고 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고 그의 해석학적 현상학에 대한 국내 학자들의 방법론적 논의가 부족한 실정이다. 따라서 이 연구는 van Manen의 저작에 대한 분석을 통해 그의 해석학적 현상학의 특징을 탐구해 보고자 하였다. 연구의 결과, 그의 해석학적 현상학은 다음의 네 가지 특징을 가지고 있었다. 그것은 첫째, 의미를 드러내는 일화의 강조. 둘째, 탐구의 목적으로서 체험의 본질적 의미구조 밝히기. 셋째, 분석에 있어서 해석과 해석학적 순환 강조. 넷째, 방법적 과정의 특징으로서 환원의 구체화 등이었다. 이러한 그의 해석학적 현상학의 특징에 대한 탐구는 그의 방법론을 적용하고자 하는 연구자들로 하여금 더욱 해석학적 현상학의 특징이 잘 드러나는 해석학적 현상학적 접근을 시도하는데 시사점을 제공할 수 있을 것이다.

관광학 연구를 위한 현상학적 접근들: 이론적 토대부터 연구 도구까지

현상학이 광범위하게 사용되면서 이 용어가 무엇을 지칭하는지에 대해서 이견이 많다. 우선 현상학은 질적 접근에서 연구 수행의 바탕이 되는 포괄적 연구관을 가리킨다. 그러나 보다 광의적으로 철학의 한 사조 혹은 철학적 담론 속에서정교하게 다듬어지고 있는 개념이기도 하며, 미시적으로는 특정 연구 방법을 의미하기도 한다. 이 연구의 목적은 이러한다양한 현상학적 접근들을 관광학 연구자들에게 다가가기 쉽도록 소개하고, 종국에는 관광 경험과 관련된 질적 연구에서폭넓은 적용 범주를 지닌 현상학에 대한 매력도를 높이는 것에 있다. 분문에서는 질적 연구의 세계관에 대한 논의를 시작으로 널리 알려진 철학적 현상학의 두 흐름(Husserl, Heidegger)을 간략하게 논한 후 자료의 수집 및 분석을 위한 두가지 연구 방법(Giorgi, van Manen)을 소개하였다. 마지막으로 다양한 차원에서 일관성이 확보될 수 있음을 사례를통해서 확인하기 위해 최근 관광학에서 Giorgi의 현상학적 접근을 활용한 사례와 van Manen의 현상학적 연구 방법을활용하여 관광 경험을 고찰한 사례를 살펴보았다. 전자의 경우 현상학은 연구 도구로 한정되지만 후자에서는 연구자의세계관을 형성하는 토대가 되었음을 예시하였다. 이후 현상학이 관광학의 학문적 탐색의 지평을 확장하는 데 기여하기위해서는 일관성을 갖춘 현상학의 적용이 중요하다는 것을 논의하였다. 현상학은 철학적 토대, 연구관, 분석 방법 등각 차원이 복합적으로 얽혀있기에 이러한 다양한 차원에서의 현상학적 지향점을 맞추는 시도는 관광학에서 깊이 있는질적 연구 수행을 돕는다. Phenomenology is employed extensively, giving rise to a multitude of divergent interpretations. Phenomenology serves as the foundational perspective underpinning all qualitative approaches, a kind of philosophy, and a specific research method. This study aims to present phenomenology in an accessible manner to tourism researchers, and in turn, to enhance its appeal for research concerning tourism experiences. The article initiates by situating phenomenology within the broader context of qualitative research paradigms. Afterwards, two widely known streams of philosophical phenomenology, Husserlian and Heideggerian, were introduced, followed by an exploration of two research methodologies by Giorgi and van Manen who applied philosophical phenomenology for data collection and analysis within the realm of social sciences. The versatility of phenomenology becomes evident through its diverse applications. Finally, to exemplify the achievement of coherence across the main parts of a research paper, we delved into two recent tourism studies that each employed either Giorgi's or van Manen's methodological approach. In the first study, phenomenology mainly served as a analytical tool, while in the second, it constituted the fundamental framework shaping the researcher's perspective. Improving cohesion in research papers empowers researchers to engage in profound qualitative inquiries. The discourse also emphasizes how doing a phenomenological research in practice could significantly contribute to the scholarly advancement in the field of tourism.

사회과학 연구방법론으로서 현상학적 질적 연구의 개념 탐색

As a social science research method that will be influenced by phenomenology, phenomenological qualitative research has established itself as one of the major qualitative research traditions that explores human experience. Nevertheless, confusion still exists around phenomenological qualitative research. Therefore, this study tried to explore the confusion related to the concept of phenomenological qualitative research and its alternatives in terms of tasks and prospects. As a result, this study presented a discussion on issues such as the name of phenomenological qualitative research, the subject and approach of the study, the meaning structure as a result, and writing as a description of the result. The results of this study may provide implications for qualitative researchers in carrying out phenomenological qualitative research in accordance with a more methodological concept.

현상학적 질적연구의 몇 가지 측면에 대한 해명

This paper is a reply to the questions that Seung-Ho Lee has raised in his review article on Phenomenology and Qualitative Research (by Nam-In Lee, Paju: Hangilsa, 2014). The aim of this paper is to clarify some important issues of the phenomenological qualitative research by responding to the questions raised by him. In chapter 1, I will summarize the questions raised by him in his review article. His questions are as follows: What is the unitary component common to various kinds of phenomenology? What is the unitary component common to all kinds of lived-experience as the object of the phenomenological research on the lived-experience? What is the unitary component common to all kinds of phenomenological research on the lived experience or all kinds of phenomenological qualitative research? What is the relation between intentionality and the phenomenological research on the lived experience? What is the relation between causality and the phenomenological qualitative research? What is the role of mathematics for the quantitative research. Thereafter I will attempt to reply to his questions. In chapter 2, I will show that the unitary component common to all kinds of phenomenology consists in striving to become a rigorous science. In chapter 3, I will show that phenomenological research on the lived-experience is a sub-field of the phenomenological qualitative research that is again a sub-field of phenomenology. In chapter 4, I will indicate that the unitary component common to all kinds of the lived-experience is defined as all qualitative. In chapter 5, I will show that the unitary component common to all kinds of phenomenological research on the lived experience consists in the fact that they all strive to clarify the intentionality. In chapter 6, I will show that the qualitative causality, not the natural causality, is the object of phenomenological qualitative research. In chapter 7, I will clarify how mathematics understood as a qualitative science could serve as the means of the qualitative research.

현상학과 질적연구방법

지난 50-60년 동안 많은 연구자들은 인문사회과학 분야에서 수학적인 정량적 분석의 방법이 지니는 한계 및 문제점을 지적하면서 다양한 유형의 질적연구방법을 개발해 왔다. 그런데 이러한 다양한 유형의 질적연구방법 중의 하나는 바로 현상학적 질적연구방법이다. 현상학적 질적연구방법은 현상학의 창시자인 후썰에 위해 정초된 현상학적 철학의 전통에 토대를 두고 발전된 연구방법이다. 현상학적 질적연구방법 중의 하나는 “체험연구"(lived experience research)를 위한 방법인데. 현상학적 체험연구방법은 심리학, 간호학, 교육학 등 다양한 인문사회과학의 분야에서 광범위하게 활용되고 있다. 그런데 현상학적 체험연구방법이 이처럼 광범위하게 사용되고 있음에도 불구하고, 그것이 과연 현상학적 철학의 전통에 토대를 두고 있는 타당한 방법인가의 문제에 대해서는 그동안 많은 논란이 있어 왔다. 많은 연구자들이 그동안 개발된 여러 가지 유형의 현상학적 체험연구방법을 활용하면서 많은 연구결과를 발표하고 있는 것과는 달리 일군의 연구자들은 그러한 방법이 심각한 문제를 지니고 있다고 주장하면서 그에 대해 비판하고 있다. 이처럼 현상학적 질적연구방법과 관련된 논의는 현재 다소 혼란스러운 상황에 처해 있는데, 그 일차적인 이유는 현상학적 질적연구 방법이 아직도 튼튼한 철학적인 토대 위에 정초되어 있지 않기 때문이다. 따라서 현상학적 칠적연구방법과 관련된 이러한 혼란스러운 상황을 극복하기 위해서는 현상학적 질적연구방법의 철학적 토대에 대한 체계적이며 종합적인 검토가 필요하다. 이 글의 목표는 바로 현상학적 질적연구방법의 철학적 토대를 검토하변서 다양한 유형의 현상학적 질적연구방법의 가능성을 모색하는 데 있다. In the past 50-60 years, pointing out the limitation of the quantitative method in the humanities and social sciences, some researchers have developed various kinds of qualitative research method. One of them is the phenomenological qualitative method. The founders of this method consider it to be rooted in the phenomenological tradition that is developed by such phenomenologists as E. Husserl, M. Heidegger, M. Merleau-Ponty. The most well known phenomenological qualitative method is the method of the lived experience research. It is widely used by many researchers in humanities and social sciences. However, some challenge that this kind of phenomenological research method is really rooted in the phenomenological tradition. One can say that the phenomenological research method is not yet founded on a firm philosophical ground. The aim of this paper is to examine if the phenomenological method of the lived experience research could be considered to be really rooted in the phenomenological tradition and to explore the possibilities of phenomenological qualitative research.

과학적 방법으로서의 현상학적 질적 연구 -후설 현상학을 중심으로-

In these days, the expression, ‘scientific’ is a synonym for ‘objective’ or ‘reliable’. In this paper, I have tried to examine of the scientific character of so-called ‘qualitative research’ which became a major alternative method in the various social sciences. There are many kinds of methods in the qualitative researches: narrative research, phenomenological research, grounded theory research, ethnographic research and case study etc. Each method has a specific character. However, it means that it is hard to grasp the identity of qualitative research itself. Generally speaking, the qualitative research is regarded as a non-quantitative research. The quantitative researches have a common identity by using a mathematic of statistical method, while qualitative researches have many differences in each research domain. Despite of methodological ambiguousness qualitative research has to be regarded as a significant method in various social researches, because the meaning of actions of human being and of social relations could not be explicated by a quantitative method. However, it is not obvious, how qualitative researches satisfy of the criterion of scientific research: objectivity and universality. I have argued that the phenomenological qualitative research is a good candidate to satisfy the criterions.

메를로-퐁티의 『행동의 구조』를 통해 살펴본 현상학적 질적연구의 개념 - 의미 체험의 요소, 상황, 그리고 구조 -

Nowadays, academic interests in 'qualitative research' are raised pointing out the limitations of 'quantitative research'. This trend is active in the field of humanities and social sciences. Among them, the movement to find the theoretical foundation and methodic basis of qualitative research in 'phenomenology' is attracting attention. Unfortunately, we cannot say that the concept of 'phenomenological qualitative research' has been elucidated satisfactorily enough. In general, ‘quality’ is understood as ‘subjective experience’, but this is too loose and rough definition so that it does not help at all. The aim of this paper is to contribute to the formulation of the concept of 'phenomenological qualitative research'. In particular, I would like to clarify the concept of 'phenomenological qualitative research' through Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenology. In this regard, Merleau-Ponty’s The Structure of Behavior has great inspiration. Because there he critically criticise the limitations of objective science centered on ‘quantitative research’ and clearly shows what the science dealing with lived-experience should be, what the science has to do with phenomenology as well. Therefore, this paper will clarify the concept of ‘phenomenological qualitative research’ suggested by Merleau-Ponty by focusing on The Structure of Behavior. In these procedure, I will show that Merleau-Ponty’s Gestalt accords with Husserl’s multi-layered constitution, so that I can suggest a framework for research that qualitative research dealing with experience. ‘양적연구(quantitative research)’의 한계를 지적하면서 점차 ‘질적연구(qualitative research)’에 대한 관심이 증대되고 있다. 이러한 경향은 인문·사회과학 분야에서 활발한데, 그중에서도 질적연구의 이론적 토대와 방법적 기초를 ‘현상학(phenomenology)’에서 찾으려는 움직임이 주목받고 있다. 이에 발맞추어 ‘현상학적 질적연구’에 관해 중요한 논의가 많이 이루어져 온 것도 사실이다. 하지만 ‘현상학적 질적연구’의 개념은 좀 더 해명이 필요한 것처럼 보인다. 대체로 ‘질’은 ‘주관적 체험’ 정도로 이해되고 있는데, 필자는 메를로-퐁티(M. Merleau-Ponty)의 현상학을 통해 ‘현상학적 질적연구’의 개념이 좀 더 분명해지면 좋을 것이라 생각한다. 본고는 『행동의 구조』에서 제시된 메를로-퐁티의 현상학을 통해 ‘현상학적 질적연구’ 개념의 정립에 기여하려는 데에 있다. 이 과정에서 메를로-퐁티의 ‘배경 위의 꼴’로서의 ‘게슈탈트’가 후설 현상학의 ‘구성적 층 이론’과 조화될 수 있음을 보임으로써, 질적 연구가 체험을 다룰 때에 의지할 수 있는 연구의 착안점과 기본틀을 제안할 것이다.

연구패러다임의 변화와 소비자학 분야에 적용된 질적 연구 고찰

  Despite the recently increased interest in the qualitative research methodology due to a change in research paradigm, the current condition sees that actual research materials on qualitative approach are not much published. This study is to examine detailed research methodologies in qualitative research paradigm and how such methodologies are utilized in the field of consumer studies, and contribute to a presentation of direction for a various and in-depth study beyond the level of academic studies dedicated to a quantitative research.<BR>  In this regard, we reviewed in detail 4 research methodologies such as Ethnography, Grounded Theory, Narrative, and Phenomenology as the qualitative research methodology frequently accepted in comparison in the field of consumer studies and analyzed theses which used a qualitative research methodology among the research theses reported to academic journals of the related academic societies till 2006. As a result of an analysis, it was found out that only 10 theses among the ones in academic journals of the 5 related academic societies in total from 1994 till 2006 were the research materials through a qualitative approach. Thus, it can be confirmed that the research in the field of consumer studies in Korea has still been heavily focused on a quantitative research.
