Vol.30 No.5

This research aims to compare and analyze types and frequency of Biophilic design vocabularies extracted from practical Biophilic design projects’ explanatory texts in order to building a theoretical background regarding user’s cognition on Biophilic Effect (Arvay, 2018; Choi & Lee, 2020) affected by Biophilic design vocabularies centered around the Biophilic design concept. The detailed objectives are following as: first, to theoretically review a written language in a general language and Biophilic design theory, and to look around natural experiences and Biophilic effect from Biophilic Design based on Biophilia theory. Second, to establish a definition and role of Biophilic design concept and Biophilic design word through a definition and role of an interior design concept and interior design word. Third, to extract Biophilic design vocabularies from project explanatory texts in “Natural Inside” written by William D. Browning and Catherine O. Ryan (2020), to divide them to direct experience of nature, indirect experience of nature and experience of space and place categorized in “The Practice of Biophilic Design” written by Stephen R. Kellert and Elizabeth F. Calabrese (2015), and to compare and analyze Biophilic design words’ types and frequency. Through being compared to Biophilic design vocabulary’s types and frequency, the research has driven results that first, Natural Landscape and Ecosystem from attributes of the direct experience of nature, Information Richness from attributes of the indirect experience of nature, and Prospect and Refuge from attributes of the experience of space and place, ranked as the first position. Second, Natural Landscape and Ecosystem at home, hotel, hospital and factory, and Plant at store, office and hospital are shown the highest frequency among the attributes of the direct experience of nature. Natural Material at store and hotel, and Information Richness at school, office, hotel and community are the highest frequency among the attributes of the indirect experience of nature. and Prospect and Refuge at home, office, hotel and hospital are ranked the first position among the attributes of the experience of space and place. These results can be analyzed that these words attract to users so that they play an important role to represent their own specialized spaces’ characteristics, Biophilic design concept, also known as interior design concept, which is a designer intent.

Health benefits of evidence-based biophilic-designed environments: A review

Vol.24 No.1

Background and objective: People-nature experiences, which suggest that humans seek connections between nature and other forms of life, were presented by biologist E. O. Wilson in 1984. Biophilic design attributes support environments that can improve human connections to nature. A significant amount of literature on environmental psychology provides empirical evidence that nature benefits humans, and that practical landscape and built environments can be designed to link humans and nature (e.g., the 14 biophilic design patterns). To date, however, there has been no well-done research on reviewing the health benefits of biophilic design. Methods: The paper provides a narrative review on biophilic design and human health. The scope of this article is limited to biophilic-design books and peer-review articles related to “biophilic design,” “evidence-based,” “benefits,” “health,” rather than an attempt to identify universal issues with biophilia hypothesis. Results: A total of 45 papers were included in our review, which was related to the top five biophilic design patterns and design: the presence of natural images, the presence of plants, visual and non-visual connections to nature, and material connection with nature. These studies were related to physiology and psychology through direct or indirect connections with nature and experiences in space and place. Conclusion: This study presents two important comparisons of the empirical research on biophilic design and human health that can explain the relationship of people-nature experiences to biophilic design and human health and provides insights into related researches and recommendations for future application of our findings.

Vol.20 No.-

With the urban environment and public health becoming the focus of attention, the biophilic design has become an inevitable trend in the development of landscape design, which has positive significance for solving urbanization problems. However, researches on biophilic design have been popular in the field of architecture or interior design but there is a lock of studies in the field of landscape architecture. The purpose of this study were, therefore, to analyze the common characteristics of biophilic design and the garden design philosophy of Chinese traditional gardens, and to identify the biophilic design characteristics of Chinese traditional gardens. A total of 23 studies related to biophilic design and Chinese garden design philosophy were used for content analysis by Nvivo. We also analysed the Chinese traditional garden, Liuyuan(留园), as the case study to identify the characteristics of the biological design. As the results, the biophilic design characteristics are directly or indirectly embodied in the garden design philosophy of Chinese traditional garden. In addition, Chinese traditional garden provides people with a mysterious psychological experience through a sense of enclose, which has a common feature with the sense of mystery of biophilic design characteristic. We expect that this study would help to expand the biophilic design from the perspective of the landscape field and provides inspiration for the biophilic design of traditional gardens in the future.

Vol.17 No.2

Biophilic Design, the word that combines biophilia and design, is based on preferring a design space in which nature is introduced, because the connection and interaction between humans and nature give humans a sense of stability and tranquility and optimal comfort. The biophilic design have been actively studied since the 2000s after using the ‘Biophilia’ in 1986 by Edward O. Wilson. Then it was introduced at 2010’s in Korea, and the studies related to healing and work spaces were actively being conducted. On the other hand, the concept of biophilic design has many consensus with the idea that harmony with nature and respect for life of the Korean ancestors that leads to health and abundance. The purpose of this study is to find out the characteristics of biophilic design in traditional Korean spaces as the unique expression characteristics, and present them as design elements of modern Korean design as a biophilic design. A case study was selected for research methodology. Korean traditional spaces that expresses Korean identity were selected as an example, and then the characteristics of the biophilic design by Stephen Kellert were used as a analysis tool. The results were the characteristics of biophilic design that appeared in Korean design.

(Background and Purpose) Recently, owing to the onset of the coronavirus disease pandemic, there has been an increase in consumer interest in naturalism. Consequently, a preference has developed for spaces that offer natural experiences rooted in the biophilic concept. Specifically, consumers visiting plant content spaces find satisfaction through the brand's message and effective communication, culminating in a heightened brand experience. Given this context, plant content spaces have prioritized constructing brand experience environments centered on the biophilic design concept. A growing interest in spatial design strategies can be noted, particularly focusing on the relationship attributes of the brand experience space that arise from the biophilic idea. Therefore, this study aims to identify elements for brand experience spaces within plant content areas, highlight the attributes of biophilic design spaces that enhance brand experiences beyond plant sale stores, and suggest directions for future research. (Method) Through a literature review centered on previous research, first, this study derived biophilic design elements and attributes of the brand experience space based on the biophilic concept's characteristics. Second, a model for quantitative analysis was proposed from these identified characteristics, and focus group interviews(FGI) were conducted to examine selected cases. Third, based on the results, this study seeks to elucidate the relationship between the characteristics of plant content spaces and brand experiences and proposes new directions for maximizing brand experience spaces underpinned by the biophilic design. (Results) In this study, four plant content spaces were selected. Design elements based on the biophilic concept and plant content experience space attributes were holistically applied to the four spaces (product development, content development, exhibition/showroom, project collaboration, and pop-up store). The application varied depending on the concepts and attributes of each brand's experience space. The distinctiveness of brand experience space attributes was identified as a critical factor in enhancing the brand's value and differentiation. When the brand's identity was more pronounced in external sales spaces, the brand's awareness and preference increased. The product development space, project collaboration, and pop-up store space were highlighted as pivotal in maximizing the brand experience. (Conclusions) It was identified that plant content spaces incorporate both brand experience space design elements and spatial features. The biophilic concept and its design play a crucial role in amplifying the brand experience. Furthermore, the external sales spaces with strengthened brand identities and distinctiveness prove beneficial in further bolstering the brand experience in plant content spaces. A strategic application in both permanent and temporary spaces concerning consumer relationships can create a conducive environment for a positive consumer brand experience. Continued research centered on brand experience space design based on the biophilic concept is essential.

Vol.25 No.1

With the importance of design reflecting nature-friendly concepts emerging, the purpose of this study is to develop a mural wallpaper design reflecting biophilic design to incorporate the concept into surface pattern design in the textile field. First, a theoretical review of biophilic design was conducted through the synthesis of prior research. Biophilic design was derived from the concept of life love called biophilia and inherited the concept that humans instinctively love nature and choose things related to nature unconsciously. Biophilic design aims to help consumers feel psychological stability by providing direct and indirect experiences of nature, and Stephen Callert proposed empirical elements and attributes for the effective application and realization of biophilic design. This research proposed this by converting each element and attribute into an example of a method that can be expressed in pattern design in order to apply it to surface pattern design. Among the elements and attributes of biophilic design, the natural shape and shape items were considered suitable as elements that can be practically used for surface pattern design, and buildings and plants from the Greek and Roman periods, where the elements were best revealed, were selected as the main motif. In expressing the motif derived through this process, it was judged that the mural wallpaper applying a relatively larger motif and refit than the general wallpaper was appropriate. A total of four designs, Artemis, Demeter, Hera, and Dioni, were created, and buildings from the Greek and Roman periods were developed as the main motif, and the 12 symbolic plants of Greek and Roman mythology, which are closely related to this, were expressed as sub or point motifs. Through this, we intend to develop a design that can provide indirect beneficial natural experiences and psychological stability to consumers.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of biophilic design in the public space of a Chinese general hospital. The application of biophilic design can play an important role in the public space design of general hospitals. We provide a better medical environment for patients by making general hospitals a lively and warm place. First, an overview of common spaces in general hospitals is provided, including the concept, characteristics, and importance of common spaces. Next, the concept of biophilic design and previous research on biophilic design are summarized, and the need to apply biophilic design in public spaces of general hospitals is explained. In addition, the biophilic design mode elements of general hospital common spaces are systematically analyzed in eight aspects. As a result of conducting an online survey targeting patients and guardians of general hospitals, the survey subjects were satisfied with the design of the public space of the general hospital, but highly recognized the effect and necessity of biophilic design. It was recognized that the application of biophilic design would greatly improve physiological, psychological, and eco-friendly effects such as reducing pain and fatigue, inducing positive emotions, and providing a pleasant space. Also, after applying the biophilic design, it was recognized that the public space image of general hospitals would change to a ‘clear, fun, friendly, and warm’ image.

Vol.35 No.12

Biophilic design gives human beings positive and valuable experiences in nature. The experience in nature in the architectural environment is mainly symbolic and metaphorical, and is based on visual sensations such as color, form, and image. Recently, modern people living in a modern and simple style indoor space have a desire to pursue visual stimuli for interest or pleasure. This desire can be satisfied through color, lighting, and finishing plan. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to propose a biophilic design color palette based on the empirical characteristics and properties of biophilic design. The methods used in this study are as follows. First, the biophilic design factors and natural landscape preference criteria are examined. Second, based on the review results, natural landscape images are selected and color information for each biophilic design element is extracted according to the vertical and horizontal directions. Third, color information is converted to NCS color code and palette range and hue range are derived through the analysis of ratio and average values. Finally, based on the analysis results, biophilic design color palette is proposed for each element. The results of this study might be useful as basic data in establishing biophilic design strategies and applying them to architecture and interior construction.
