        Depressive Symptoms among Chinese International Students in South Korea: Roles of Perceived Social Support, Perceived Discrimination, and Years of Residence

        The purpose of the current study was to examine factors associated with depressive symptoms among Chinese international students in South Korea, with a particular focus on the effects of years of residence, linguistic acculturation, perceived social support, and perceived discrimination. A total of 129 Chinese international students studying at a large university in South Korea participated in this study. The Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale, the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, and the Perceived Discrimination Scale were utilized. In addition, Korean language usage, perceived Korean language fluency, years of residence in Korea, and other demographic information were obtained. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was used to test the hypothesized model. Results revealed that perceived social support andperceived discrimination were directly related to depressive symptoms. Results also suggested that there was an indirect effect of years of residence in Korea on depressive symptoms via perceived social support.In addition, there was an indirect effect of linguistic acculturation on depressive symptoms via perceived discrimination.

        Depressive Symptoms among Chinese International Students in South Korea: Roles of Perceived Social Support, Perceived Discrimination, and Years of Residence

        본 연구는 한국에 거주하는 중국유학생들의 우울에 이르는 경로를 연구하기 위하여 AMOS 프로그램을 사용하였다. 본 연구에서는 중국유학생의 우울에 영향을 주는 변인으로 거주기간, 한국어 구사 능력, 사회적 지지와 인지하는 차별의 연구모형으로 구성하여 우울에 이르는 경로를 분석하였다. 본 연구의 조사대상자로 129명의 중국유학생들이 참여 하였고, 연구 도구로는 CES-D(우울증), MSPSS(사회적지지), PD(인지하는 차별)을 사용하였다. 인구학적 변인으로 한국어 구사능력, 한국어 이해능력, 거주기간, 성별 등을 포함시켰다. 통계는 SEM(Structural Equation Modeling)을 사용하였는데 연구 결과는 사회적 지지와 인지하는 차별은 중국유학생의 우울에 직접적인 영향을 주었다. 또한 거주기간은 사회적 지지를 통하여 우울에 간접적인 영향을 주었고, 언어 구사능력은 인지하는 차별을 통하여 우울에 간접적인 영향을 주었다. 이러한 결과에 근거하여 중국유학생들의 우울의 완화를 위한 사회복지 개입전략을 제시하였다.         노령 지체장애인의 생활만족도에 대한 영향요인에 관한 연구 - 차별경험 및 차별인식의 매개효과를 중심으로 -

        The purpose of this study is to establish the model of casual relationship of the factors influencing life satisfaction of elderly with physical disability. We built and reviewed the model under the assumptions that physical function, disability grades, economic status influenced the life satisfaction of E.P.D. and the influences were mediated by the discrimination experiences and the perceived disability discrimination. For this study, We analyzed the 380cases which were composed of E.P.D. over 60 yrs from the survey of disabled persons in korea(2008). The result was that 11 hypotheses of 22 hypotheses were supported. Disability grades, economic status were efficient to discrimination experiences and economic status, discrimination experiences were efficient to perceived disability discrimination. And physical function, disability grades, economic status were statistically significant to life satisfaction. Reviewing the indirect effect between the variables, the mediating effect of discrimination experience was efficient to disability grades and economic status and was efficient to the perceived disability discrimination, the disability grades and economic status effects to the perceived disability discrimination. We proposed the promotion strategy to enhance the E.P.D's life satisfaction on these results. First, We have to make a strategy for improving the heavily E.P.D's discrimination. Second, the income preservation policy of E.P.D is required. Third, the rapid intervention to the discrimination experience of E.P.D is needed. Forth, medical rehabilitation and exercise program for the promotion of physical function of E.P.D. is needed. Fifth, the improvement strategy for discrimination by connecting the sector of the welfare for the disabled and the welfare for the Elderly. Sixth, the further qualitative study is needed in the future. 본 연구는 노령 지체장애인의 생활만족도 영향요인들 간의 인과관계 모형구축을 위한 목적으로 진행되었다. 즉 신체기능, 장애정도, 경제상태가 노령 지체장애인의 생활만족도에 미치는 영향을 차별경험과 차별인식이 매개한다는 가정 하에 연구모형을 구축하여 검증하였다. 연구를 위하여 2008년 장애인실태조사 자료 중 60세 이상 지체장애인 380명의 자료를 분석에 포함하였다. 연구결과, 차별경험에 장애정도, 경제상태가 유의한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났으며, 차별인식에 경제상태, 차별경험이 유의한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 신체기능, 경제상태, 차별경험이 생활만족도에 미치는 영향이 통계적으로 유의하였다. 변수들 간의 간접효과에 대하여 살펴본 결과, 장애정도와 경제상태가 생활만족도에 미치는 영향을 차별경험이 매개하는 효과가 유의하였으며, 장애정도와 경제상태가 차별인식에 미치는 영향을 차별경험이 매개하는 효과가 유의하였다. 이상의 결과에 기초하여 노령 지체장애인의 생활만족도 증진전략을 제시하였다.

        The association between perceived discriminations and well-being in Korean employed workers

        Background: Around the globe, discrimination has emerged as a social issue requiring serious consideration. From the perspective of public health, the impact of discrimination on the health of affected individuals is a subject of great importance. On the other hand, subjective well-being is a key indicator of an individual’s physical, mental, and social health. The present study aims to analyze the relationship between Korean employed workers’ subjective health and their exposure to perceived discrimination. Methods: The Fourth Korean Working Conditions Survey (KWCS, 2014) was conducted on a representative sample of the economically active population aged 15 years or older, who were either employees or self-employed at the time of interview. After removing inconsistent data, 32,984 employed workers were examined in this study. The data included general and occupational characteristics, perceived discrimination, and well-being. Well-being was measured through the WHO-Five index (1998 version). Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to examine the association between perceived discrimination and well-being. Result: As a group, employed workers who were exposed to discrimination had a significantly higher likelihood of “poor well-being” than their counterparts who were not exposed to discrimination. More specifically, the workers exposed to age discrimination had an odds ratio(OR) of 1.51 (95% CI: 1.36–1.68), workers exposed to discrimination based on educational attainment had an OR of 1.43 (95% CI: 1.26–1.61), and workers exposed to discrimination based on employment type had an OR of 1.68 (95% CI: 1.48–1.91) with respect to poor well-being. Furthermore, workers exposed to a greater number of discriminatory incidents were also at a higher risk of “poor well-being” than their counterparts who were exposed to fewer such incidents. More specifically, the workers with three exposures to discrimination had an OR of 2.60 (95% CI: 1.92–3.53), the workers with two such exposures had an OR of 1.69 (95% CI: 1.44– 1.99), and the workers with one such exposure had an OR of 1.32 (95% CI: 1.20–1.45). Conclusion: The present study found that discrimination based on age, educational attainment, or employment type put workers at a higher risk of “poor well-being,” and that the greater the exposure to discrimination, the higher the risk of poor well-being.

        Experiences and Perceptions of Gender Discrimination and Equality among Korean Surgeons: Results of a Survey of the Korean Surgical Society

        Background: Previous studies that have focused on the challenges faced by female surgeons, such as the gender pay gap, gender biases, lower likelihood of promotion, and gender differences in the perception of discrimination against women, are reviewed. A more comprehensive understanding of explicit and implicit gender discrimination and experiences and perceptions of discrimination is needed. This study aims to determine the current prevalence and degree of gender discrimination in the Korean Surgical Society and to compare the experiences and perceptions of gender discrimination between male and female surgeons. Methods: We analyzed 400 responses from a survey sent to all members of the Korean Surgical Society. This electronic survey included 16 items on experiences of gender discrimination and 17 items on perceptions of gender discrimination. We conducted χ2 tests and binary logistic regression on the data regarding these experiences and perceptions of gender discrimination. Results: Adjusted analyses found that female surgeons were more likely to experience gender discrimination than their male counterparts across all categories of discrimination. Further, adjusted analyses showed that female surgeons were more likely to confirm the presence of gender discrimination than male surgeons. Conclusion: Female surgeons were more likely to experience implicit and explicit gender biases and discrimination throughout all stages of their career progression. We also discovered significant gender differences in the perception of gender discrimination, as well as the experience of it. Changing the male-dominated culture and raising awareness of gender biases and discrimination among male surgeons are crucial steps toward addressing gender discrimination in surgery.

        중고령 장애인의 차별 경험이 주관적 건강상태와 주관적 행복도에 미치는 영향: 선형성장모형을 이용하여

        This study examined to analyze the effects of discrimination experiences on self-perceived health and happiness in the middle aged with disability using the data of 2nd wave PSED(Panel Survey of Employment for the Disabled). For the data analysis, linear growth model was applied to four year(2006-2019) data to examine the effects on the base year and the rate of change. The results showed that self-perceived health and happiness had a constant rate of growth during period of four years. The results of conditional growth model showed that education levels, income, employment, chronic illness were significant contributors to self-perceived health trajectories while discrimination*exercise days and discrimination*education levels had significant moderating effects. As for happiness trajectories, income, age, average exercise days a week, smoking, discrimination experience, and chronic illness were significant predictors, whereas discrimination*employment and discrimination*perceived SES levels had significant moderating effects. Based on these results, theoretical, practical as well as policy implications were discussed to help improve discrimination towards the midde aged with disability, as well as their health and mental health status. 본 연구는 중고령 장애인의 차별 경험과 부가적 차별요인들이 주관적 건강상태와 주관적 행복도의 궤적에 미치는 영향을 살펴보는 데 목적이 있다. 본 연구를 위해 2016년부터 2019년까지 실시한 장애인고용패널조사로부터 수집된 2차 웨이브(제 1-4차) 원자료를 사용하였다. 중고령 장애인의 주관적 건강상태와 주관적 행복도의 초기 값와 변화율에 대한 예측요인을 모형화한 연구 모형을 선형성장모형(Linear Growth Model)으로 분석하였다. 연구결과, 중고령 장애인의 주관적 건강상태와 주관적 행복도는 매년 소폭 증가하는 성장변화를 나타냈다. 이러한 변화를 설명하는 조건모형 분석결과, 주관적 건강상태의 변화를 설명하는 주요변수로는 학력, 소득수준, 취업 여부, 만성질환이 유의미하게 나타났으며, 조절변수로는 차별 경험x운동일 수와 차별 경험x최종 학력이 유의미하게 나타났다. 주관적 행복도의 변화를 예측하는 주요변수로는 소득수준, 연령대, 1주일 평균 운동일, 흡연 여부, 차별 경험, 만성질환이 유의미하게 나타났으며, 조절변수로는 차별 경험x취업 여부와 차별 경험x주관적 사회경제적 지위가 유의미하게 나타났다. 연구결과를 기반으로 이중위험가설 및 교차이론에 대한 이론적 함의를 제시하고, 중고령 장애인의 건강 불평등을 완화 시킬 수 있는 실천적⋅정책적 시사점을 제시하였다.

        장애노인의 장애정도가 차별인지와 차별정도를 매개로 우울에 미치는 영향 : 사회적지지의 매개된 조절효과

        The purpose of this study is to verify whether social support has a mediated moderating effect in affecting depression through whether the degree of disability is caused by perceived discrimination and the degree of discrimination for the elderly with disabilities. By this means, data from the year of the 15th Korea Welfare Panel Study were used as a reference. Among the total of 1,066 people, 633 elders with disabilities aged 65 to 89 who responded to the principal variables of depression, social support, degree of disability, perceived discrimination, and degree of discrimination were analyzed. The results of the study are as follows: First, the degree of disability of the elderly with disabilities had an effect on depression through perceived discrimination. Second, the degree of disability of the elderly with disabilities had an effect on depression through the degree of discrimination. Third, the social support of the elderly with disabilities moderated the mediating effect on discrimination between the degree of disability and depression. And the mediated moderating effect was shown as a buffering effect. Fourth, the social support for the elderly with disabilities moderated the mediating effect between the degree of disability and depression to the degree of discrimination. The mediated moderating effect was shown as a buffering effect. According to the results above, a measure to reduce the depression of the elderly with disabilities was proposed. 본 연구는 장애노인을 대상으로 장애정도가 차별인지와 차별정도를 매개로 우울에영향을 미치는데 있어 사회적지지가 매개된 조절효과를 가지는지 검증하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위하여 한국복지패널조사(Korea Welfare Panel Study) 15차년도 자료를 활용하였다. 총 1,066명 중에서 주요변인인 우울, 사회적지지, 장애정도, 차별인지, 차별정도에 응답한 65세 이상 89세 이하 장애노인 633명을 분석대상으로 하였다. 본 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 장애노인의 장애정도는 차별인지를 매개로 우울에 미치는 영향을 미쳤다. 둘째, 장애노인의 장애정도는 차별정도를 매개로 우울에 미치는 영향을 미쳤다. 셋째, 장애노인의 사회적지지는 장애정도와 우울사이에서 차별인지에 매개효과를 조절하였다. 조절효과는 완충효과로 나타났다. 넷째, 장애노인의 사회적지지는 장애정도와 우울사이에서 차별정도에 매개효과를 조절하였다. 조절효과는완충효과로 나타났다. 나타난 결과에 따라 장애노인의 우울을 줄이기 위한 방안을 제언하였다.

        장애인차별금지 및 권리구제 등에 관한 법률에 대한 소고

        본고에서는 장애인차별금지와 권리구제 등에 관한 법률을 검토하고 몇 가지 논점에 대하여 살펴보았다. 수년간의 입법과정에서 이 법은 다양한 관점의 논의를 거치고, 제정 이후 몇 차례의 개정을 통해 보다 완성도 높은 법이 되었다. 향후 조금 더 보완을 바란다면 이는 대체로 장애의 개념정의, 간접차별과 관련한 편의제공의무, 차별구제와 관련한 몇 가지 개선점 등이다. 먼저 장애의 개념정의에 있어서는 사회적 관점에서의 장애개념 정의가 더 구체화되었으면 한다. 아울러, 미국의 장애인차별금지법 상 규정되어 있는 간주장애개념 규정의 취지를 반영하여 `장애가 있다고 추측됨` 이라는 현행 법 규정을 보다 구체적으로 규정할 필요가 있다. 또한, 편의제공의무의 확대가 차별의 판단과 관련하여 특히 간접차별 판단을 위한 전제조건으로서 꼭 필요하다고 본다. 이를 위해서는 영세사업자등에 대한 국가차원에서의 각종 지원을 비롯한 사회적·국가적 차원의 편의제공의무 확대시행이 꼭 필요하다. 차별의 구제와 관련하여서는 입증책임의 전환, 손해배상, 차별원인의 경합 등을 살펴보았다. 입증책임 전환의 경우 비교적 소송현실을 잘 반영한 구체적 타당성이 있는 입법이라고 보지만, 차별원인의 경합에 있어서는 차별에 대한 다른 적법한 원인이 인정된다 하더라도 또 다른 한편으로 위법한 원인인 장애를 원인으로 차별에 이르렀음이 인정된다면 그것만으로도 독립적인 차별행위가 성립한다는 취지로 법을 개정할 필요가 있다. 이와 아울러, 차별구제를 위한 법원의 적극적 조치의 활성화와 징벌적 손해배상 등의 도입도 필요하다고 본다. I have reviewed the Korea`s “Act on the Prohibition of Discrimination against Disabled Persons, Remedy against Infringement of their Rights, etc (KDDA).” The KDDA was enacted in April, 2007. After quite bitter arguments over the type and contents of the legislation, it was finally legislated as a separate law regulating only discrimination against disabled persons, not in the form of law handling discrimination for all various reasons. The KDDA, as the result of disputes of several years and review of all the precedent foreign relevant laws, is quite a good and reasonable legislative product from the perspective of its purpose of enactment. The purpose of the KDDA is to prohibit discrimination on the basis of disability in all aspects of life, and to effectively safeguard the rights and interests of individuals discriminated against on the ground of disability, thus enabling them to fully participate in society and establish their right to equality which will ensure their human dignity and sense of value. However, I think there are some points to be further refurbished. According to the KDDA, disability means a physical or mental impairment or loss of function that substantially limits an individual`s personal or social activities for an extended period of time. I would like to suggest that the KDDA should give more weight on the social aspect of the disability notion. Disability, not as a factor carried by disabled persons but as the one perceived by other members of society, should be the key reason of discriminations regulated and forbidden by the KDDA. In the same line, I would like to suggest the definition of disability of the “Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990” of the U.S.A to be reflected in the future revision of the KDDA, in terms of the disability regarded and perceived by the others. I have also reviewed the duty to provide legitimate conveniences to the disabled persons without justifiable grounds. The duty is very important as a precondition to be satisfied, before judging whether there is any indirect discrimination against disabled persons. I would like to suggest that the legitimate exclusion and exemptions of the duty shall be further diminished. To do so, governmental financial support for small businesses is also required. And, as for the shift of burden of proof, I have reviewed the KDDA and found the current statements of it is quite reasonable from the perspective of reality of the litigations process. I have also reviewed the matter of findings of discriminations especially when there are two or more causes exist for one discrimination. The KDDA states that if a disability is deemed to be a primary cause of such discrimination, then such act shall be deemed discrimination under the KDDA. My opinion is that if a disability is one of the substantial causes of a discrimination, then such act should fall under a category of forbidden discrimination. I would like to suggest a revision of the KDDA in this regard. And last, as for the judicial relief for the victims of the illegal discrimination against on the basis of disability, more active roles of the courts are required especially in terms of proactive measures to improve working conditions. In addition to that, punitive damage reimbursement is also preferable to be included in the future revision of the KDDA.

        교사의 정당한 세상에 대한 믿음과 우울의 관계: 성차별지각과 성별의 조절된 매개효과

        본 연구는 중등학교 교사의 정당한 세상에 대한 믿음, 성차별지각과 우울의 관계에서 성별의 조절된 매개효과를 확인하였다. 이를 위해 전국 중등학교에 재직중인 남녀교사를 대상으로 정당한 세상에 대한 믿음, 우울, 성차별지각을 측정하였고, 412명 자료를 분석하였다. 연구결과, 성차별지각이 정당한 세상에 대한 믿음과 우울 간의 관계를 부분 매개하는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 성별이 정당한 세상에 대한 믿음과 성차별지각 간의 관계를 조절하는 것으로 나타났다. 정당한 세상에 대한 신념이 낮을수록 성차별지각의 수준이 높아졌는데 남성의 경우 그 관련성이 여성보다 강했다. 셋째, 정당한 세상에 대한 믿음과 우울 간의 관계에서 성차별지각과 성별의 조절된 매개효과가 나타났다. 즉, 정당한 세상에 대한 믿음이 낮을수록 성차별지각의 수준이 높아졌고 이로 인해 우울을 더 많이 경험하는 것으로 나타났으며, 이러한 관계가 남성의 경우 더 뚜렷하게 나타났다. 마지막으로 이러한 연구결과를 바탕으로 본 연구의 의의와 제한점 및 제언을 논의하였다. This study examined the moderated mediation effect by gender in the relationship between the belief in a just world, perceived sex discrimination and depression of teachers. For this purpose, we surveyed belief in a just world, perceived sex discrimination, depression and gender of the 412 teachers working in secondary schools and the result was analyzed. The results indicated that perceived sex discrimination partially mediated the relationship between belief in a just world and depression. Second, gender had moderation effect on belief in a just world and perceived sex discrimination. The lower the belief in a just world, the higher the level of perceived sex discrimination. In the case of men, the tendency was stronger than that of women. Third, the moderated meditation effect of perceived sex discrimination and gender on the relationship between belief in a just world and depression. In other words, the lower the belief in a just world, the higher the level of perceived sex discrimination, which could lead to more experience of depression, and this pattern was more pronounced in men. Finally, implications and limitations of this study as well as the suggestions for the future study were discussed.

        장애인의 일상생활 · 취업준비 · 일자리에서 지각된 차별경험에 영향을 주는 요인에 관한 연구

        This study aims to explore the actual conditions of perceived disability discrimination and its influence factors. In order to understand the perceived disability discrimination in daily living, job search, and workplace, this study examined relevant variables from the 6th Panel Survey of Employment for the Disabled(2013). The study used the 6th year(2013) data by Korea Employment Agency For the Disabled applying 4,161 cases, as with dependent variables, job seekers 3,385 cases and the employed 1,707 cases for this analysis. The descriptive analysis, Chi-square test and logistic regression were conducted to examine using SPSS 21.0. The results suggested that age, gender, marital status, degree of disability, health conditions, level of English proficiency, interpersonal skills, and the state of employment significantly influenced on the probability of the experience of the perceived disability discrimination. In case of the job search, marital status, degree of disability, level of English proficiency, and interpersonal skills were found as significant variables. In workplace, age, degree of disability, level of English proficiency, and interpersonal skills were significantly affecting factors. Based on these finding, it was confirmed that Human capital affected the perceived disability discrimination in daily living, job search, and workplace. In addition, this study is to identify the severe realities of the multiple discrimination against women with disabilities and the unemployed. 본 연구의 목적은 장애인 당사자의 지각된 차별경험의 실태와 그 영향요인에 관하여 고찰하는 것이다. 특히 장애인의 일상생활, 취업준비, 일자리에서 지각된 차별경험에 영향을 주는 요인을 중점적으로 살펴보았다. 분석 자료는 한국장애인고용공단에서 구축한 6차년도 장애인고용패널조사의 응답자인 4,161명이었으며, 종속변수에 따라 비취업자3,385명, 취업자 1,707명으로 나뉘어 분석하였다. 주요변수는 일상생활, 취업준비, 일자리에 따른 지각된 차별경험과 장애인의 인구사회학적요인, 장애관련요인, 인적자본요인이었으며, 분석방법은 기술통계와 Chi-square 검증, 로지스틱 회귀분석을 실시하였다. 분석결과 일상생활 차별경험에 영향을 미치는 변수는 연령, 성별, 배우자의 유무, 장애정도, 건강상태, 영어능력, 대인관계능력, 취업유무인 것으로 나타났다. 취업준비시의 차별경험에 영향을 미치는 변수는 배우자의 유무, 장애정도, 영어능력과 대인관계능력인 것으로 나타났다. 일자리에서의 차별경험에 영향을 미치는 변수는 연령, 장애정도, 영어능력과 대인관계능력인 것으로 나타났다. 이 연구는 장애인의 일상생활, 취업준비, 일자리에서의 지각된 차별경험에 영향을 주는 요인 중 인적자본의 영향을 고찰하였다는 점과 특히 장애여성과 같이 다중차별에 처하여 있거나 비취업장애인에게 심각한 차별경험이 존재한다는 사실을 보여주었다는 점에서 의의가 있다.
