Nine cattle among 18 in a native Korean herd died or were euthanized within 3 days. The affected cattle showed cowshed. The pigs and dogs had been fed leftover food originating from nearby restaurants, and the cattle could presumably reach the contaminated food in the pig troughs. Necropsy revealed a few chicken bones and red pepper pieces as well as large amounts of grain and rice straw hay mixed in the rumen. Botulism type D was isolated in the ruminal contents of one of the cattle. We speculated that the outbreak was associated with the cattle incidentally eating presumably contaminated leftover food from the pig trough.

Jong-Soo Kim, Ki Nam Lee, Jin-Joo Hue, Jun-Hyeong Kim, Bong Soo Kang, Sang Yoon Nam, Young Won Yun, Jae-Hwang Jeong2, Beom Jun Lee 충북대학교 동물의학연구소 2011 Journal of Biomedical and Translational Research Vol.12 No.1
To investigate the effect of carnosine on exhaustive exercise, swimming tests were conducted weekly with loads corresponding to 5% of body weight attached to the tails of mice, and the swimming time to exhaustion was measured. Eighty male ICR mice were divided into four groups, to which carnosine was administered at doses of 0 (control), 10, 50, and 250 mg/kg/day, respectively, for a period of four weeks. At the end of swimming exercise challenges, serum biochemistry, oxidative stress enzyme activity, and antioxidant enzyme activity in tissues were determined. Treatment with 250 mg/kg carnosine resulted in a significant increase in swimming times to exhaustion, compared to the control group in the first (P<0.01) and third week (P<0.05). Significantly lower serum lactate levels were observed after the swimming exercise in the carnosine-treated groups (10 and 250 mg/kg), compared with the control (P<0.01). Malondialdehyde levels in the liver (10 and 50 mg/kg carnosine treated groups) and skeletal muscle (250 mg/kg carnosine treated group) were significantly lower, compared with the control (P<0.05). Significantly lower protein carbonyl levels in skeletal muscle were observed in the 50 and 250 mg/kg carnosine treated groups, compared with the control (P<0.01). Superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase activities in skeletal muscle did not differ significantly among the groups. These results indicate that carnosine may improve swimming exercise capacity by attenuating production of lactate and reducing oxidative stress in mice.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Ultrafine one-dimensional LaFe1-xMnxO3 (0.00 ≤ x ≤ 0.15) nanofibers were prepared by electrospinning. The X-ray diffraction pattern of Mn-doped LaFeO3 nanofibers showed orthorhombic perovskite crystalline structure of LaFeO3. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images revealed that the nanofibers were composed of fine particulates with diameter of about 50 ± 5 nm in pure LaFeO3 and 35 ± 5 nm in 15 mol% Mn-doped nanofibers. The chemical state of Mn3+ and Mn4+ in Mn-doped LaFeO3 nanofibers were confirmed from curve fitting after X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurement. The optical energy bandgap decreased with increasing Mn-doping, which can be ascribed to Mn dopant levels near the conduction band. A clear hysteresis loop can be observed for Mn-doped LaFeO3 nanofibers. With increasing Mn concentration, remnant magnetization linearly increased from 0.098 to 0.289 emu/g at 10 K, which is due to uncompensated spin moment at the surface and the differences of spin magnetic moments between Fe and Mn ions. The coercivity is decreased from 632 to 190 Oe, following an increasing trend with increase of particles size up to a critical particle size. The present work shows that Mn doping in LaFeO3 nanofibers is a very effective method for having enhancement of magnetic property in antiferromagnetic LaFeO3.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Ultrafine Mn-doped LaFeO3 nanofibers have been synthesized using electrospinning. </LI> <LI> The particulate size showed decrease with increasing Mn concentration from 51 to 23 nm. </LI> <LI> With increasing Mn concentration, remnant magnetization linearly increased. </LI> <LI> The coercivity is decreased from 5 mol% Mn concentration. </LI> </UL> </P>

β-O-linkedN-acetylglucosamine(O-GlcNAc) is a nucleocytosolic post-translational modification on serine and threonine residues that is dynamically regulated by O-GlcNActransferase and O-GlcNAcase. Many proteins are O-GlcNAcylated in response to various cellular processes, including transcription, proliferation, apoptosis and signal transduction. So, we have studied the function of O-GlcNAc modification on several proteins. We found that O-GlcNAcylated NF-kB was translocated into nucleus and had increased transcriptional activity. We report increased O-GlcNAcylation in non-small cell lung carcinoma A549 cells and various other cells in response to glucose deprivation. Also we show that glycogen degradation in response to glucose deprivation provides a source for UDP-GlcNAc required for increased O-GlcNAcylation under this condition. we demonstrate that Snail is O-GlcNAcylated and adjacent-site occupancy inhibits phosphorylation by GSK-3, resulting in increased Snail stability and attenuation of E-cadherin proximal promoter activity and transcription level. Furthermore, Overexpression of OGT induces in vivo invasion program of epithelial cancer cells by Snail-dependent manner. O-GlcNAc modification seems to be involved in neurite outgrowth in cultured neuronal cells. O-GlcNAcylation is highly conserved, so we were able to find several novel proteins modified with O-GlcNAc in Drosophila S2 cell line. Also we found O-GlcNAcylated site in ncOGT outside of TPR by using Q-TOF MS. Now we focus on the activities and function of ncOGT by mutagenesis studies. As stated above, O-GlcNAcylation is related to many cellular metabolism. And we already have found the function of O-GlcNAc modification on several important proteins. We'll keep on concentrating on this interesting post-translational modification. If you have any interest, feel free to contact us.

Purpose: To evaluate the treatment outcomes of preoperative versus postoperative concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CRT) on locally advanced rectal cancer. Materials and Methods: Medical data of 114 patients with locally advanced rectal cancer treated with CRT preoperatively (54 patients) or postoperatively (60 patients) from June 2003 to April 2011 was analyzed retrospectively. 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) or a precursor of 5-FU-based concurrent CRT (median, 50.4 Gy) and total mesorectal excision were conducted for all patients. The median follow-up duration was 43 months (range, 16 to 118 months). The primary end point was disease-free survival (DFS). The secondary end points were overall survival (OS), locoregional control, toxicity, and sphincter preservation rate. Results: The 5-year DFS rate was 72.1% and 48.6% for the preoperative and postoperative CRT group, respectively (p = 0.05, the univariate analysis; p = 0.10, the multivariate analysis). The 5-year OS rate was not significantly different between the groups (76.2% vs. 69.0%, p = 0.23). The 5-year locoregional control rate was 85.2% and 84.7% for the preoperative and postoperative CRT groups (p = 0.98). The sphincter preservation rate of low-lying tumor showed significant difference between both groups (58.1% vs. 25.0%, p = 0.02). Pathologic tumor and nodal down-classification occurred after the preoperative CRT (53.7% and 77.8%, both p < 0.001). Acute and chronic toxicities were not significantly different between both groups (p=0.10 and p = 0.62, respectively). Conclusion: The results confirm that preoperative CRT can be advantageous for improving down-classification rate and the sphincter preservation rate of low-lying tumor in rectal cancer.
OPGW Corrosion Detection Using Nondestructive Test Method
Jeong, Jae-Kee,Yoon, Gi-Gab,Kang, Ji-Won,Yang, Hai-Won The Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers 1998 Journal of Electrical Engineering and Information Vol.3 No.1
This paper deals with some characteristics of a nondestructive eddy current detector to measure OPGW(Composite overhead ground wire with optical fiber) corrosion. This detector is designed to automatically run on OPGW and to continuously inspect the corrosion of the line. The impedance of the eddy current coil changing by any corrosion phenomenon of OPGW is analyzed. Several performances of the detector are described and experimental procedures and test results are also given. As a result, it is shown that the implemented detector can be measured some quantitative data for crack, broken wires or severe deteriorations in OPGW. This nondestructive test method would be applied to improve the reliability and efficiency of transmission line in service.

The multiscale wavelet-Galerkin method implemented in an adaptive manner has an advantage of obtaining accurate solutions with a substantially reduced number of interpolation points. The method is becoming popular, but its numerical efficiency still needs improvement. The objectives of this investigation are to present a new numerical scheme to improve the performance of the multi scale adaptive wavelet-Galerkin method and to give detailed implementation procedure. Specifically, the subdomain technique suitable for multiscale methods is developed and implemented. When the standard wavelet-Galerkin method is implemented without domain subdivision, the interaction between very long scale wavelets and very short scale wavelets leads to a poorly-sparse system matrix, which considerably worsens numerical efficiency for large- sized problems. The performance of the developed strategy is checked in terms of numerical costs such as the CPU time and memory size. Since the detailed implementation procedure including preprocessing and stiffness matrix construction is given, researchers having experiences in standard finite element implementation may be able to extend the multiscale method further or utilize some features of the multiscale method in their own applications.

Magnesium hydrogen phosphate (MHP, $MgHPO_4$) recovered from swine manure was prepared as an alternative phosphorus (P) source. Conventional P additives, monocalcium phosphate (MCP), dicalcium phosphate (DCP), and tricalcium phosphate (TCP) were compared with the MHP in terms of growth and P availability by juvenile carp Cyprinus carpio. A basal diet as a negative control was prepared using practical feed ingredients without P supplementation to which four supplemental P sources were added at the level of 2%. Five groups of 450 fish having mean body weight of 6.5 g following 24 h fasting after 2 weeks of adaptation period were randomly distributed into each of 15 tanks (30 fish/tank). Fish were hand-fed to apparent satiety twice a day for 9 weeks. Fish fed the MHP had weight gain (WG), feed conversion ratio (FCR), protein efficiency ratio (PER), and specific growth rate (SGR) comparable to those fed the MCP. Those values of both the MHP and MCP groups were significantly different (p < 0.05) from the other groups. Fish groups fed control and the TCP showed the lowest WG, PER, and SGR and the highest FCR among treatments. No fish were died among treatments during the experimental period. Fish fed control and the TCP showed hematocrit and hemoglobin significantly lower (p < 0.05) than fish fed the MHP. The lowest inorganic P (Pi) in plasma was found in the control group. Even though Pi was not significantly different (p > 0.05) from other phosphate groups, fish fed the MCP and MHP retained higher P in whole body than the other groups. P availability was determined to be 93.2, 62.4, 6.1, and 98.0% for MCP, DCP, TCP, and MHP, respectively. The present results suggested that the MHP recovered from wastewater stream could be used as an alternative P source in carp diet.
