M-13 bacteriophage based structural color sensor for detecting antibiotics

Color sensor systems that exploit the advantages of M-13 bacteriophage have been shown to be potentially useful for detection of hazardous materials. The properties of M-13 bacteriophage can be systemically modified to impart target-specific selectivity and sensitivity using the phage display technique. Here, we describe a structural color-based sensor that utilizes genetically engineered M-13 bacteriophage to discriminate different types of antibiotics. An M-13 bacteriophage based structural color matrix was fabricated using a simple pulling technique by self-assembly of M-13 bacteriophage. When exposed to organic solvent, M-13 bacteriophage bundles promptly swell and promote distinct structural color change. Color sensors composed of M-13 bacteriophage genetically engineered to possess WHW peptide motifs clearly discriminated three different types of antibiotics, which was based on the color analysis of sensor using principal component analysis. Our sensing approach based on M-13 bacteriophage could be a promising sensor technique such as an environmental monitoring system.

<P>In automotive turbo-chargers, excellent high-temperature properties are needed for retaining their structures at extremely high temperature of exhausted gas, and thus austenitic cast steels have been actively developed. In this study, high-temperature tensile properties of austenitic cast steels containing different W, Nb, and Cr were interpreted by deformation and fracture mechanisms related with carbides and austenite matrix. Replacement effects of W by Nb or Cr were also investigated because of expensive alloying cost of W. The high-temperature tensile test results revealed that the Cr-added steel containing many M7C3 carbides showed the higher strength than the Nb-added steel containing hard MC carbides. This was because the strength could be enhanced by distributing carbides having slightly lower hardness such as M7C3 carbides in the strengthened matrix as it could hold hard carbides, like in the Cr-added steel. The Cr-added steel (1 wt% W) also showed the higher strength and elongation at 900 degrees C than the basic-composition steel (2 wt% W), which indicated that the partly replacement of W by Cr was successfully achieved. 우리나라에서는 2002 년 이후 근골격계 질환자의 수가 급증하여 2003 년 산업안전보건법의 개정으로 산업안전보건기준에 관한 규칙에 근골격계 부담작업에 의한 건강장해 예방기준이 마련되면서, 근골격계 질환에 관한 연구가 활발히 진행되어 왔다. 작업 현장의 근골격계 질환을 일으킬 수 있는 작업을 평가하기 위하여 OWAS, RULA, REBA 등 여러 가지 분석 기법이 인간 공학 전문가에 의하여 사용되어 왔으나 기법 간의 차이나 적합성에 대한 연구는 미미하다. 또한 QEC 는 진동, 반복성 등의 요소를 고려할 수 있도록 만들어진 평가 방법이나 널리 쓰이고 있지 않다. 따라서 본 연구의 목적은 자동차공장과 제철 공장에서의 작업을 기준으로 근골격계 질환 평가를 위한 분석 기법의 비교 평가와 적합성을 분석하는 것이다.
The Unpredictable Event of Remaining Broken Needle in the Body during Vascular Puncture: Case Report

Background Numerous medical techniques are used to care for patients in hospitals. Unexpected accidents can occur in the course of treating patients. Here we report a case that the unpredictable situation during vascular puncture. Case A 87-year-old female patient was admitted to treat pneumonia. Her body mass index (BMI) was 26.67kg/m2. She was bed-ridden state since old cerebral infarction and operation of left hip. During treating pneumonia with antibiotics, the oxygen demand suddenly increased, respiratory acidosis was progressed, and the blood pressure was lowered. We performed several times of arterial blood gas analysis (ABGA) to monitor the patient's condition. Because of hypotension, We punctured the femoral artery instead of the radial or the dorsal artery. We used a 25 gauge and 16mm needle for arterial puncture. After pull out of blood, during draw a syringe out of a blood vessel the needle was disconnedted from the syringe. The needle remained in the groin, and the location of the needle was not identified in X-ray and sonography. The needle located in the soft tissue of the groin not in the vessel under the fluoroscopy. We completely removed the needle using the fluoroscopy(figure 1). The broken needle removed from the groin(figure 2). Conclusion Clinicians carefully perform medical techniques . However, sometimes accidents can occur unexpectedly. We experinced the unpredictable event during the arterial puncture to the obese patient. When puncturing the femoral artery in the obese patient, we should consider the needle of suitable length with close attention for puncture.
