For limitation and interruption of short circuit currents from low voltage to extra high voltage applications, the electrical equipment including fuses and circuit breakers, are widely used today. But in order to anticipate increasing needs for effective and competitive device for limiting the growing fault current in electrical power systems, fault current limitation technologies and fault current limitation devices are widely introduced and investigated in these days. Fault current limiters are emerging electric equipment which is under development using various methods including superconducting fault current limiter, solid state fault current limiter, arc driving fault current limiters. And these various methods have some advantages and disadvantages to take into considerations In order to commercialize fault current limiters in the electrical networks, a lot of discussions should be given on the point that fault current limiting methods, need for fault current limiters, coordination with existing protective system, and field experience before commercialization. In this paper, recent trends of fault current limiting technologies will be reviewed and the key issues of superconducting fault current limiters will be dealt with. And finally, future applications of superconducting fault current limiters would be discussed.

High critical current density, high n value, multiple faults endurances, and fast recovery characteristics of YBCO thin films are very attractive characteristics for developing resistive type superconducting fault current limiters. But due to the limited current and voltage ratings of one YBCO module, it is needed to construct series and parallel module connections for high capacity electric networks. Especially for distribution network, more than 30 units should be connected in series to meet voltage level. So in order to construct distribution-level superconducting fault current limiter, simultaneous quench in one YBCO thin films should be realized, and furthermore, quench should be occurred in all fault current limiting units equally to avoid local heating and failures. In this paper, we proposed optimum design of YBCO thin films for fault current limiting module and technical method using shunt resistor to achieve simultaneous quench between multi current limiting units. From the analytical and the experimental results, optimal current path and thickness of shunt material was determined for YBCO thin films and shunt resistor between modules was developed. Finally, 14 kV one phase resistive fault current limiter using multi YBCO thin films was constructed and it was possible to get satisfactory test results.

In this study, electromagnetic analysis of current paths including meander pattern, spiral pattern, and bi-spiral pattern were performed and in order to verity the analysis results, experiments tests including quench test, and insulation tests were performed. In addition, bubble corner concepts were introduced to enhance insulation reliability. From our study, bi-spiral pattern of YBCO thin films were rather effective for quench and insulation than the other patterns. So this current path pattern was adopted for YBCO thin films in order to develop 6.6 kV resistive fault current limiters. Finally YBCO thin films were connected in series and parallel to enhance capacity, and the test results of current limiting characteristics of 6.6kV resistive SFCL were successful.
