      • Effect of In-row Plant Spacing on Growth and Yield of Korean Native Allium wakegi Araki

        Jo,Man-Hyun,Ham,In-Ki,Park,Sang-Kyu,Seo,Gwan-Seok,Han,Gyu-Heung,Woo,In-Shik 한국자원식물학회 2003 Plant Resources Vol.6 No.2

Allium wakegi Araki was grown at plant spacings of 5, 10, 15, and 20 cm to determine the effect of planting density on the growth and yield. Allium wakegi Araki plants grown at the 5 cm plant spacing had the lowest bulb diameter and bulb weight, while plants at the lowest density (20 cm spacing) had the highest bulb diameter, bulb number, bulb weight and fresh weight. In general, plants grown at narrower spacings produced significantly smaller bulb diameter and bulb weight, but resulted in the highest yields and plants per hectare and lower fresh weights per plant.

      • Effect of Plant Growth Regulators on Clonal Production through Basal Stem Explant Cultures of a Phalaenopsis Hybrid

        Jo,Man-Hyun,Ham,In-ki,Park,Sang-kyu,Seo,Gwan-Seok,Han,Gyu-Heung,Woo,In-Shik 한국자원식물학회 2003 Plant Resources Vol.6 No.2

This study was conducted to develop the clonal propagation technique through in vitro culture using basal stem explants in Phalaenopsis hybrid grown in vitro. The highest frequency of protocorm-like body (PLB) formation was obtained when basal stem explants were cultured on VW medium containing 30g/L sucrose, 500 mg/L activated charcoal, 150 ml/L coconut water, 1 mg/L NAA, 5 mg/L 2iP and 2.5g/L gel rite. PLBs transferred to Hyponex medium were regenerated to plantlets. Plantlets transferred to plastic pots containing spagnum moss were developed and successfully acclimatized under greenhouse. The flower was bloomingly opened in plants regenerated from basal stem explants. The flower was not different from both mother plant and plant induced through clonal propagation of Phalaenopsis hybrid.

      • Hypertriglyceridemia-Induced Pancreatitis in Poorly Controlled Type 2 Diabetes

        Hyun-Ho Jo,Kyu-Jin Kim,Bo-Yeon Kim,Chan-Hee Jung,Chul-Hee Kim,Sung-Koo Kang,Ji-Oh Mok 순천향대학교 순천향의학연구소 2014 Journal of Soonchunhyang Medical Science Vol.20 No.2

A 38-year-old female presented with abdominal pain, radiating to her back. Her medical history included type 2 diabetes, which had been uncontrolled for 8 months. Her initial laboratory tests showed marked hyperglycemia, metabolic acidosis, and elevated serum amylase and lipase levels, although the results were inconclusive in terms of a direct diagnosis of acute pancreatitis (AP). Abdominal computed tomography showed only minimal fluid collection at the pancreas tail. As her serum triglyceride (TG) level was 9,884 mg/dL, we made a working diagnosis of AP due to hypertriglyceridemia, and she was treated with massive hydration with an insulin infusion. Subsequently, she recovered rapidly from the abdominal pain, her serum glucose was controlled, and her serum TG decreased. Hypertriglyceridemia is a well-accepted underlying cause of AP. When extremely high hypertriglyceridemia is detected in patients with type 2 diabetes or metabolic syndrome, complications should be considered and managed.

Effect of Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Jet on Inactivation of Listeria monocytogenes, Quality, and Genotoxicity of Cooked Egg White and Yolk

        Hyun Jung Lee,Hyun Pa Song,Hee Soo Jung,Won Ho Choe,Jun Sang Ham,Jun Heon Lee,Cheo Run Jo 한국축산식품학회 2012 한국축산식품학회지 Vol.32 No.5

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of an atmospheric pressure plasma (APP) jet on L. monocytogenes inactivation, quality characteristics, and genotoxicological safety of cooked egg white and yolk. APP treatment using He gas resulted in a 5 decimal reduction in the number of L. monocytogenes in cooked egg white, whereas that using He+O2, N2, and N2+O2 decreased the number further, and to undetectable levels. All treatments of cooked egg yolk resulted in undetectable levels of inoculated L. monocytogenes. There were no viable cells of total aerobic bacteria after APP treatment on day 0 while the control showed approximately 3-4 Log CFU/g. On day 7, the numbers of total aerobic bacteria had increased by approximately 3 log cycles in cooked egg white, but there were no viable cells in cooked egg yolk after 2 min of APP jet. APP treatment decreased the L*-values of cooked egg white and yolk significantly on day 0. No significant sensory differences were found among the cooked egg white samples, whereas significant reductions in flavor, taste, and overall acceptability were found in cooked egg yolks treated with APP jets. SOS chromotest did not reveal the presence of genotoxic products following APP treatments of cooked egg white and yolk. Therefore, it can be concluded that APP jets can be used as a non-thermal means to enhance the safety and extend the shelf-life of cooked egg white and yolk.

Background : Some of invasive plants, which were introduced from foreign countries, have caused problems in Korea. Invasion of these invasive plants in the ecosystem threatens the habitat of endemic species, reducing biodiversity, and causing a disturbance in the ecological system. Hypochaeris radicata L. (Asteraceae), the most invasive plants in Korea, particularly in Jeju Island, invade farmland, and autochthonous forest, establishing monocultures and modifying the ecosystem structure. This invasive species has become a serious environmental problem because they displace the indigenous plant species. This study was conducted to evaluate the antioxidantive effects of ethanolic extracts from different parts (root, stem, seed and leaf) of the invasive exotic species Hypochaeris radicata L. Methods and Results : The aim of present study was to estimate the total phenolic and flavonoid contents and to investigate in vitro antioxidant potential of ethanolic leaf, root, seed, and stem extracts of the Hypochaeris radicata. Antioxidant activity was assessed by using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) assay, reducing power activity, [2,2-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulphonic acid)] ABTS+ assay and ferrous ion chelating activity. The total phenolic and flavonoid contents were also determined and expressed in gallic acid and quercetin equivalent respectively. The results of the study indicate that the ethanolic extracts of the leaf, root, seed, and stem of H. radicata posses significant scavenging activity against DPPH (21.25% for leaf, 34.98% for root, 60.76% for seed and 45.25% for stem at 250 μg/ml each) and ABTS+ radical scavenging activity (14.85% for leaf, 17.40% for root, 35.91% for seed and 24.70% for stem at 250 μg/ml each), reducing power activity (0.178 absorbance at 300 μg/ml for leaf, 0.211 absorbance at 300 μg/ml for root, 0.447 absorbance at 300 μg/ml for seed, 0.276 absorbance at 300 μg/ml for stem). The free radical scavenging and antioxidant activities may be attributed to the presence of adequate phenolic (gallic acid content is 361.92.98 μg/g in leaf, 356.59μg/g in root, 719.72 μg/g in seed and 512.08 μg/g stem) and flavonoid compounds (219.52 μg/g in leaf, 75.67μg/g in root, 281.39 μg/g in seed and 215.66 μg/g stem). This study revealed that the ethanolic extracts of both leaf, root, seed and stem of H. radicata has demonstrated significant antioxidant activity. Conclusion : In conclusion, the present study has demonstrated that Hypochaeris radicata seed ethanol extracts are rich in phenolics and have a strong antioxidant activity and a radical-scavenging action in all of the tested methods. This suggests that Hypochaeris radicata is a good source of natural antioxidants.

      • Comorbid bronchiectasis increases the mortality of corticosteroid-dependent asthma

( Hyun Lee ),( Jiin Ryu ),( Eunwoo Nam ),( Min Ju Jo ),( Sung Jun Chung ),( Yoomi Yeo ),( Dong Won Park ),( Tai Sun Park ),( Ji-yong Moon ),( Tae-hyung Kim ),( Jang Won Sohn ),( Sang-heon Kim ),( Ho J 대한결핵 및 호흡기학회 2019 대한결핵 및 호흡기학회 추계학술대회 초록집 Vol.127 No.-

Background: Bronchiectasis is a common comorbid condition in patients with severe asthma, of whom up to two-thirds are corticosteroid (CS)-dependent. However, there are uncertainty whether comorbid bronchiectasis is associated with long-term mortality in patients with CS-dependent asthma. Methods: Using data from the Korean National Health Insurance Services (NHIS), a population-based 1:1 matched cohort of patients with CS-dependent asthma (CS use > 6 months during baseline period) (n = 8,334) and CS-independent asthma (CS use < 6 months during baseline period) (n = 8,223) was performed. Each group was further subclassified according to the presence or absence of bronchiectasis. Hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for all-cause mortality among CS-dependent asthma patients with bronchiectasis, CS-dependent asthma patients without bronchiectasis, and CS-independent asthma patients with bronchiectasis relative to CS-independent asthma patients without bronchiectasis were evaluated. Results: In both CS-dependent and CS-independent cohort, those with bronchiectasis were more likely to be older (p = 0.020), receive medical aid as a type of insurance (p < 0.001), and have higher Charlson comorbidities index (p < 0.001). Compared with patients without bronchiectasis, those with bronchiectasis were more likely to have metabolic diseases (p < 0.001), pulmonary infectious diseases (p < 0.001), and cardiovascular diseases (p = 0.041). There was no significant increased HR for mortality in CS-dependent asthma patients with bronchiectasis relative to CS-dependent asthma patients without bronchiectasis (HR = 1.18, 95% CI = 0.92-1.50). However, CS-dependent asthma patients with bronchiectasis and those without bronchiectasis were 2.18 (95% CI = 2.041-2.33) and 2.32 (95% CI = 1.92-2.81) times higher mortality compared with CS-independent asthma patients without bronchiectasis, respectively. Conclusion: Comorbid bronchiectasis is associated with increased mortality risk in patients with CS-dependent asthma.

A Comparison Study of Esophageal Findings on 18F-FDG PET/CT and Esophagogastroduodenoscopy

        Jo, KwanHyeong,Kim, Soyoung,Cha, Jongtae,Hwang, Sang Hyun,Lee, Narae,Yun, Mijin,Kang, Won Jun The Korea Society of Nuclear Medicine 2016 핵의학 분자영상 Vol.50 No.2

Purpose The aim of this study was to compare the esophageal findings of 2-deoxy-2-[$^{18}F$]fluoro-D-glucose positron emission tomography-computed tomography ($^{18}F-FDG$ PET/CT) and esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD). Methods We retrospectively reviewed $^{18}F-FDG$ PET/CT and EGD findings of 369 subjects who underwent medical examination between January 2014 and December 2014. The range and intensity of esophageal $^{18}F-FDG$ uptake were visually analyzed. The maximum standardized uptake value ($SUV_{max}$) of the esophagus and around the esophagogastric (EG) junction was measured. EGD results were provided by the gastroenterologist. We compared the esophageal findings obtained using $^{18}F-FDG$ PET/CT and EGD. Results There were typical linear FDG uptakes in $^{18}F-FDG$ PET/CT patients who underwent EGD the same day. In visual analysis of the range and intensity of the $^{18}F-FDG$ uptake, the patients who underwent $^{18}F-FDG$ PET/CT and EGD on the same day showed relatively diffuse and discernible $^{18}F-FDG$ uptake in the esophagus. Reflux esophagitis was diagnosed in 59 subjects, and 27 of these were classified as higher than Los Angeles classification A. With an increasing degree of reflux esophagitis observed on EGD, the $SUV_{max}$ in the esophagus and around the EG junction was also increased. Conclusion Our study showed that FDG uptake at the esophagus or the EG junction might be clinically significantly related to esophagitis. However, EGD performed before $^{18}F-FDG$ PET/CT on the same day may affect the esophageal $^{18}F-FDG$ uptake.

      • Cold atmospheric plasma prevents wrinkle formation via an anti-aging process

( Sang Gyu Hwanga ),( Jung Ho Kim ),( Soo Youn Jo ),( Young Jae Kim ),( Hyoung Min Na ),( Chong Hyun Won ) 대한피부과학회 2020 대한피부과학회 학술발표대회집 Vol.72 No.1

Background: Cold atmospheric plasma is a material that generates free radicals through the ionization of air. Despite the application of this material in various medical fields, the precise mechanism underlying its effect at the cellular level is not understood fully. To date, it is known to stimulate the expression of anti-oxidant transcription factors such as nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), forkhead box class O 3a (FOXO3a). Objectives: In this study, we aimed to assess whether and how cold atmospheric plasma affects damaged cells, particularly after exposure to UV radiation. Methods: Human dermal fibroblast primary cells from adult skin tissue were treated with the cold atmospheric plasma(CAP), UV exposure. Quantitative assessment is done by western blot analysis using various primary antibodies. Fluorescence images were obtained by immunocytochemistry. Results: Cold atmospheric plasma can promote mitochondrial health by controlling the stability of the membrane potential of mitochondria against UV radiation. Moreover, cold atmospheric plasma prevented senescence in fibroblasts exposed to UV radiation through the upregulation of p53. Cold atmospheric plasma also exhibited hormetic effects on MMP and collagen in senescent fibroblasts exposed to UV radiation. Conclusion: In conclusion, cold atmospheric plasma treatment not only protected fibroblasts from free radicals, but also repressed the aging of these cells in a UV-radiation-induced aging process.
