<P>The homeostasis of muscle properties depends on both physical and metabolic stresses. Whereas physical stress entails metabolic response for muscle homeostasis, the latter does not necessarily involve the former and may thus solely affect the homeostasis. We here report that metabolic suppression by the hypometabolic agent 3-iodothyronamine (TIAM) induced muscle cell atrophy without physical stress. We observed that the oxygen consumption rate of C2C12 myotubes decreased 40% upon treatment with 75 mu m T1AM for 6h versus 10% in the vehicle (dimethyl sulfoxide) control. The TIAM treatment reduced cell diameter of myotubes by 15% compared to the control (p<0.05). The cell diameter was reversed completely by 9h after TIAM was removed. The TIAM treatment also significantly suppressed the expression levels of heat shock protein 72 and alpha B-crystallin as well as the phosphorylation levels of Akt1, mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR), S6K, forkhead box O1 (FoxO1) and FoxO3. In contrast, the levels of ubiquitin E3 ligase MuRF1 and chymotrypsin-like activity of proteasome were significantly elevated by TIAM treatment. These results suggest that T1AM-mediated metabolic suppression induced muscle cell atrophy via activation of catabolic signaling and inhibition of anabolic signaling.</P>

The covalent attachment of ubiquitin to proteins plays a fundamental role in the regulation of cellular function through biological events involving abiotic or biotic stress responses, immune responses, and apoptosis. Here, we characterize the biological function of the Arabidopsis thaliana RING Zinc Finger 1 (AtRZF1) in dehydration response. AtRZF1 was significantly reduced by drought stress. The atrzf1 mutant was less sensitive to osmotic stress than the wild-type during early seedling development, whereas transgenic plants overexpressing AtRZF1 were hypersensitive, indicating that AtRZF1 negatively regulates drought-mediated control of early seedling development. Moreover, the ectopic expression of the AtRZF1 gene was very significantly influential in drought sensitive parameters including proline content, water loss, membrane ion leakage and the expression of dehydration stress-related genes. AtRZF1 is a functional E3 ubiquitin ligase, and its conserved C3H2C3-type RING domain is likely important for the biological function of AtRZF1 in drought response. Together, these results suggest that the E3 ligase AtRZF1 is an important regulator of water deficit stress during early seedling development.

There are several reports suggesting that Spirulina (Arthrospira) may have a beneficial effect in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases. Here we review the results of studies on the effects of dietary Spirulina on the vasomotor reactivity of aortic rings excised from either lean or obese Wistar rats. We also review preliminary results on the effects of Spirulina intake on plasma lipids and blood pressure in humans. The results of the former studies strongly suggest that Spirulina induces a tone-related increase in the synthesis/release of nitric oxide by the endothelium as well as an increase in the synthesis/release of a vasodilating cyclooxygenase-dependent metabolite of arachidonic acid and/or a decrease in the synthesis/release of a vasoconstricting eicosanoid by the endothelium. In humans, Spirulina maxima intake decreases blood pressure and plasma lipid concentrations, especially triacylglycerols and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, and indirectly modifies the total cholesterol and high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol values.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the reliability of magnetic resonance angiography(MRA) for detection of intracranial aneurysms. Twenty consecutive spontaneous subarachnoid hemorrhage patients who underwent both MRA using three-dimensional time of flight technique(3D TOf) and conventional angiography were subjected. MRA showed 15 aneurysms in 11 patients and conventional angiography revealed 18 aneurysms in 19 patients. Among the 17 subarachnoid hemorrhage, MRA diagnosed 12 patients by aneurysmal rupture. And 19 subarachnoid hemorrhage, conventional angiography showed 15 patients by aneurysmal rupture. Until now, conventional angiography are superior study than MRA but reliability of MRA increasing with improvement of technique.

The high sheet resistance (Rs) solar cells with ITO full contact suffer from low open circuit voltage (Voc) with a negligible/no passivation effect. To overcome this, we approached ITO local line contact with SiO2 passivation to reduce the recombination loss. Passivation area increases to 91.29%. The improvement in carrier lifetime, Voc, reveals the melioration in passivation. With high Rs emitter, the ITO full contact solar cell results in efficiency of 16.26% whereas the ITO local line contact solar cell results in 17.15%.
Phosphorylation of CHIP at Ser20 by Cdk5 promotes tAIF-mediated neuronal death
Kim, C,Yun, N,Lee, J,Youdim, M B H,Ju, C,Kim, W-K,Han, P-L,Oh, Y J Macmillan Publishers Limited 2016 CELL DEATH AND DIFFERENTIATION Vol.23 No.2
<P>Cyclin-dependent kinase 5 (Cdk5) is a proline-directed serine/ threonine kinase and its dysregulation is implicated in neurodegenerative diseases. Likewise, C-terminus of Hsc70-interacting protein (CHIP) is linked to neurological disorders, serving as an E3 ubiquitin ligase for targeting damaged or toxic proteins for proteasomal degradation. Here, we demonstrate that CHIP is a novel substrate for Cdk5. Cdk5 phosphorylates CHIP at Ser20 via direct binding to a highly charged domain of CHIP. Co-immunoprecipitation and ubiquitination assays reveal that Cdk5-mediated phosphorylation disrupts the interaction between CHIP and truncated apoptosis-inducing factor (tAIF) without affecting CHIP's E3 ligase activity, resulting in the inhibition of CHIP-mediated degradation of tAIF. Lentiviral transduction assay shows that knockdown of Cdk5 or overexpression of CHIPS20A, but not CHIPWT, attenuates tAIF-mediated neuronal cell death induced by hydrogen peroxide. Thus, we conclude that Cdk5-mediated phosphorylation of CHIP negatively regulates its neuroprotective function, thereby contributing to neuronal cell death progression following neurotoxic stimuli.</P>

Linganna, K.,Rathaiah, M.,Vijaya, N.,Basavapoornima, Ch.,Jayasankar, C.K.,Ju, S.,Han, W.T.,Venkatramu, V. Ceramurgica ; Elsevier Science Ltd 2015 CERAMICS INTERNATIONAL Vol.41 No.4
<P>Trivalent erbium (Er3+)-doped K-Sr-Al phosphate glasses were prepared and studied their spectroscopic properties as a function of Er2O3 concentration. Judd-Ofelt analysis has been carried out for 1.0 mol% Er2O3-doped phosphate glass and in turn radiative properties have been evaluated for the excited levels of Er3+ ion. The radiative lifetime for the (4)t(13/2) level was found to be higher for the present glass when compared to other Er3+-doped glasses. The Er3+-doped glasses exhibit intense near infrared emission at 1.53 mu m corresponds to I-4(13/2)-> I-4(15/2) transition as well as green emission at 546 nm corresponding to S-4(3/2)-> I-4(15/2) under 980 nm and 488 nm excitations, respectively. The emission cross-section spectrum for 1.0 mol% of Er2O3-doped glass has been evaluated using McCumber theory. The gain cross-section has been evaluated as a function of population inversion, which revealed that the lasing action would be achieved at 1.53 mu m for a population inversion about 40%. Decay curves for the I-4(13/2) level were measured and lifetimes have been determined for the studied glasses. The results indicate that the present glasses could be useful for laser as well as optical amplifiers at 1.53 mu m. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. All rights reserved.</P>
Insulating phases of vanadium dioxide are Mott-Hubbard insulators
Huffman, T. J.,Hendriks, C.,Walter, E. J.,Yoon, Joonseok,Ju, Honglyoul,Smith, R.,Carr, G. L.,Krakauer, H.,Qazilbash, M. M. American Physical Society 2017 Physical Review B Vol.95 No.7
<P>We present comprehensive broadband optical spectroscopy data on two insulating phases of vanadium dioxide (VO2): monoclinic M-2 and triclinic. The main result of our work is that the energy gap and the electronic structure are essentially unaltered by the first-order structural phase transition between the M-2 and triclinic phases. Moreover, the optical interband features in the M-2 and triclinic phases are remarkably similar to those observed in the well-studied monoclinic M-1 insulating phase of VO2. As the energy gap is insensitive to the different lattice structures of the three insulating phases, we rule out vanadium-vanadium pairing (the Peierls component) as the dominant contributor to the opening of the gap. Rather, the energy gap arises primarily from intra-atomic Coulomb correlations.</P>

In case of deep etching to above 300μm depth, the etch-defects appeared at etched surface could be classified into three categories such as hillocks, reaction products, and white residues. Also, the difference in both the existence of etch-defects and etch rate distribution was investigated when the etched surface was downward, upward and erected vertically in etching solution. Finally, the nondestructive method for the thickness measurement of 5~20μm thick diaphragm was devised by the observation of transmitted light through diaphragm from a 50watt focused tungsten lamp.
