Graphical Approaches for Planning ExperimentsHigh Resolution Linear Graphs for ThreeLevel Designs
Lee, Sang-Heon Military Operations Research Society of Korea 2003 한국국방경영분석학회지 Vol.29 No.2
The lack of consideration for statistical properties in Taguchi's threelevel linear graphs is rectified. We propose a new set of linear graphs for the threelevel orthogonal arrays according to the maximum resolution criterion. In the presence of twofactor interactions however, the serious bias of all the estimated effects as well as the estimated variance shows that these designs should not be employed. The various alternative designs are discussed.

The first ever demonstration of a cable‐type lithium ion battery architecture with outstanding omni‐directional flexibility is described by Je Young Kim, Heon‐Cheol Shin, and co‐workers on page 5192. The Front Cover image illustrates the unique battery architecture comprising a skeleton frame surrounding an empty space, that is, a hollow‐spiral anode with a multi‐helical structure. This design enables the battery to reliably power an LED screen or an MP3 player even under severe mechanical twisting and bending.

The technological effects of Makgeolli lees fiber (0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, and 4.0%) on chicken salt-soluble breast meat proteins in a model system on proximate composition, physicochemical properties, and textural properties were investigated. Makgeolli lees fiber was obtained from Makgeolli brew processing, and the by-products showed good dietary fiber. The moisture and ash contents, water holding capacity, redness, yellowness, hardness, and apparent viscosity of chicken salt-soluble meat protein heat-induced gel systems with Makgeolli lees fiber were all higher than the control without Makgeolli lees fiber. However, protein solubility and electrophoretic patterns did not differ among the control and treatments with Makgeolli lees fiber samples. The chicken salt-soluble protein heat-induced gel systems incorporating Makgeolli lees fiber had improved water holding capacity, textural properties, and viscosity due to Makgeolli lees fiber addition. These results suggest that the addition of 4.0% Makgeolli lees fiber to gel is helpful to improve the physical properties of heat-induced gels.

Cutting by a high speed laser cutting machine is one of most effective technologies to improve productivity. This paper has presented the cutting characteristics and optimal cutting conditions in a high speed feeding type laser cutting machine by using Tacuchi method in the design of experiment. An 1.9(34) orthogonal array is adopted to study the effect of adjustment parameters. The adjustment parameters consist of cutting speed, laser power, laser output duty and assistant gas pressure. The surface roughness of sheet metal is regarded as a quality feature. Analysis of variance is performed in order to evaluate the effect of adjustment parameters on the quality feature of laser cutting process.

This study investigated the effect of defatted pepper seed ethanolic extract (DPSE) on high-fat diet-induced obesity in C57BL/6J mice. The mice were fed a normal diet (ND), high fat diet (HFD), or HFD in combination with DPSE (100 and 200 mg/kg body weight) for 7 weeks. Supplementing the HFD of mice with DPSE significantly decreased body weight gain and food efficiency ratio induced by HFD. The amount of epididymal fat and size of adipocytes were also dramatically reduced by DPSE supplementation. Although no statistical significance was found between the HFD and HFD plus DPSE groups in plasma fat deposition, liver weight, and hepatic cholesterol contents were significantly reduced in the DPSE-treated group. In conclusion, these results suggest that DPSE could prevent obesity and adiposity. These effects may be important in developing therapeutic agents against obesity in future.
Multicriteria Optimization of Spindle Units
Sang Heon Lim,Choon Man Lee,Igor Aexeevich Zverev 한국정밀공학회 2006 International Journal of Precision Engineering and Vol.7 No.4
The quality of precision spindle units (S/Us) running on rolling bearings depends strongly on their structural parameters, such as the configuration and geometry of the S/U elements and bearing preloads. When S/Us are designed, their parameters should be optimized to improve the performance characteristics. However, it is practically impossible to state perfectly a general criterion function for S/U quality. Therefore, we propose to use a multicriteria optimization based on the parameter space investigation (PSI) method. We demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method using the optimization results of high-speed S/Us.
