Exploring Pseudoscorpiones: Diversity and insights from Korea
KyungHoon Jeong,Sora Kim 한국응용곤충학회 2023 한국응용곤충학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2023 No.10
Pseudoscorpiones De Geer, 1778, an order of arachnids, exhibits a global distribution spanning all continents, with the notable exception of Antarctica. This taxon is characterized by a wide array of unique behaviors, including phoresy and matriphagy, setting it apart from other arachnid groups. Moreover, their morphological features distinguish them notably from other animal taxa. Surprisingly, in the context of Korean research, pseudoscorpions remain a relatively unexplored field. Up until the year 2023, only 8 families, 13 genera, and 26 species have been documented in Korea. This number stands in stark contrast to neighboring countries like Japan, boasting 13 families, 35 genera, and an impressive 100 species, and China, which has documented 12 families, 39 genera, and an extensive 168 species of pseudoscorpions.
Understudied and ecologically significant: Exploring the pseudoscorpiones of Korea
KyungHoon Jeong,Sora Kim 한국응용곤충학회 2023 한국응용곤충학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2023 No.10
The order Pseudoscorpiones De Geer, 1778, often referred to as pseudoscorpion, is a relatively understudied taxonomic group in Korea. Korea has documented only 26 species within 8 families and 13 genera of Pseudoscorpiones, a notably smaller number compared to Japan, which includes 100 species in 13 families and 35 genera, or China, with 168 species in 12 families and 39 genera. Additionally, Korea currently lacks comprehensive information regarding the ecology, behavior, and taxonomic characteristics of Pseudoscorpiones. These highly sensitive soil-dwelling predators dynamically respond to changes in soil conditions, making them potential significant biological indicator species. Furthermore, Pseudoscorpiones are known for their adaptation to lower soil temperatures, rendering them particularly sensitive indicators of climate change impacts. Through this presentation, our goal is to illuminate the ecology, behavior, and taxonomic attributes of Pseudoscorpiones species recorded in Korea. By doing so, we aim to contribute to the future expansion of research in this field and enhance our understanding of these remarkable arachnids.

Background: Accurate serum creatinine (Cr) concentration measurement is essential for evaluating kidney function. In 2011, the Korean Association of External Quality Assessment Service (KEQAS) launched an accuracy-based Cr proficiency testing (ABCr PT) survey. We analyzed long-term data of the KEQAS ABCr PT survey collected between 2011 and 2019 to assess recent trends in Cr assays in Korea. Methods: The ABCr PT survey including three commutable fresh-frozen serum samples was performed twice a year. The target Cr concentration was assigned using isotope-dilution mass spectrometry. We analyzed data obtained from the participating laboratories, calculated the yearly bias, and evaluated bias trends for the major reagents and instruments. Outliers were excluded from all analysis. Results: The mean percentage bias based on the total data of all participating laboratories was 10.8% in the 2011-A survey and 0.2% in 2019-B survey. Bias for the major reagents and instruments differed depending on the manufacturer. Enzymatic assays generally showed desirable bias ranging from –3.9% to 3.2% at all Cr concentrations and lower interlaboratory variability than non-enzymatic assays (enzymatic vs. non-enzymatic, 3.3%–7.2% vs. 6.3%–9.1%). Conclusions: Although the mean percentage bias of Cr assays tends to decrease over time, it is necessary to continuously strive to improve Cr assay accuracy, especially at low concentrations.

A design of size-reduced branch line hybrid coupler(BLHC) with an artificial dielectric substrate(ADS) and defected ground structure(DGS) is described in this paper. The effective dielectric constant and equivalent capacitance per unit length increase on ADS structure. The equivalent inductance per unit length of DGS line increases due to its geometric patterns. So, ADS and DGS complementarily play a role of length-reduction of transmission line together with a critical change of the characteristic impedance. A size-reduced BLHC is designed, fabricated, and measured as an example by applying ADS and DGS to the normal circuit. The designed BLHC circuit is compared to the circuits with only ADS and DGS, and the reduction ratio are 68%, and 54%, respectively. The measured power dividing ratios and phase difference are -3.08dB, -3.87dB, and 93°, respectively. This means any critical degradation in performances is not observed even after the size-reduction by applying ADS and DGS.
