홍삼 추출물이 반치사량정도의 방사선(5Gy)에 조사된 생쥐조직 및 이들 조직에서의 효소활성에 미치는 영향을 관찰하기 위하여 ICR계 생쥐를 대상으로, 생리적 식염수군을 대조구군으로 하여, 홍삼 추출물 투여군과 방사선만을 조사한군 및 홍삼 추출물 투여후 방사선 조사군 등 4군으로 나누어 1일, 4일, 9일, 17일 및 30일 등 5회에 걸쳐 생체의 조직중 비장 및 고환에서의 중량 변화 및 GOT와 GPT의 활성을 측정하여 결과를 얻었다. 비장의 중량변화는 1일째 및 4일째 최소치를 보이다가 이후 증가추세를 보였으며, 고환의 중량 변화는 17일 이후 급격한 감소로 30일에도 증가하지 못했다. GOT의 활성도 변화는 비장에서는 초기에 현저히 증가했으며 이후 회복하는 경향이었다. 방사선 조사군들에서는 홍삼추출물 투여군이 방사선만을 조사한 군보다 빠르게 회복하는 경향이었으며 고환에서의 GOT활성은 매우 불안정하였다. GPT 활성도 변화는 비장, 고환에서 모두 초기에 증가하다가 점차 회복하는 경향이었으며 홍삼 추출물 투여후 방사선 조사군이 방사선만을 조사한군보다 빠르게 회복하는 경향이었다. 이러한 결과로 볼 때 홍삼 추출물은 방사선 조사에 의하여 기인된 비장 및 고환의 GOT와 GPT활성도 증가에 방호효과가 있다고 생각된다. This study was prepared to observe the change of tissues weight, glutamate oxaloacetate transminase(GOT) and glutamate pyruvate transminase(GPT) activities in the spleen and testis treated with red ginseng extract injection in the gamma ray irradiated mice. Groups were divided into control, red ginseng extract injection, irradiation after saline injection and irradiation after red ginseng extract injection. The spleen and testis weights were decreased at 17th day irradiation after saline injection and irradiation after red ginseng extract injection. The GOT activity showed earlier recovery at irradiation after red ginseng extract injection group than irradiation after saline injection group in the spleen. The GPT activity showed earlier recovery at irradiation after red ginseng extract injection group than irradiation after saline injection group in the spleen and testis. The above result suggest that red ginseng extract have the recovery effect on the change GOT and GPT activity after radiation injury in the spleen and testis of mice.
Report of 39 unrecorded bacterial species in Korea belonging to Gammaproteobacteria

During a series of extensive surveys of prokaryotic species diversity in Korea, bacterial strains belonging to Gammaproteobacteria were isolated from various sources of aquatic and terrestrial environments. A total of 39 isolates were obtained, which represented 39 unrecorded species in Korea belonging to 20 genera in 12 families. Enterobacteriaceae was the largest family, as eight species were assigned, which was followed by Moraxellaceae (6 species) and Pseudomonadaceae (5 species). At the genus level, Marinobacter (6 species), and Pseudomonas (5 species) were the main genera, and at least two species were obtained for Acinetobacter (3 species), Psychrobacter (3 species), Shewanella (2 species), Dickeya (2 species), Salinivibrio (2 species), Vibrio (2 species) and Rhodanobacter(2 species). The detailed description of each unrecorded species is provided.

Injectable RGD-bioconjugated Mussel Adhesive Proteins (RGD-MAPs) composite hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) hydrogels provide local periodontal tissue for bone filling in periodontal surgery. Previously we developed a novel type of injectable self-supported hydrogel (2 mg/ml of RGD-MAPs/HPMC) based porcine nano hydroxyapatite (MPH) for dental graft, which could good handling property, biodegradation or biocompatibility with the hydrogel disassembly and provided efficient cell adhesion activity and no inflammatory responses. Herein, the aim of this work was to evaluate bone formation following implantation of MPH and collagen membrane in rabbit calvarial defects. Eight male New Zealand rabbits were used and four circular calvarial defects were created on each animal. Defects were filled with different graft materials: 1) collagen membrane, 2) collagen membrane with MPH, 3) collagen membrane with bovine bone hydroxyapatite (BBH), and 4) control. The animals were sacrificed after 2 and 8 weeks of healing periods for histologic analysis. Both sites receiving MPH and BBH showed statistically increased augmented volume and new bone formation (p < 0.05). However, there was no statistical difference in new bone formation between the MPH, BBH and collagen membrane group at all healing periods. Within the limits of this study, collagen membrane with MPH was an effective material for bone formation and space maintaining in rabbit calvarial defects.

Purpose: The present study purposed to compare the hand washing effect of 7.5% powidone-iodine, which is used in the operation room of C university hospital in Seoul, with that of Ethyl alcohol-CHG mixture recommended by the US Association of Operating Room Nurses (2002) and to adopt a more effective hand disinfectant. Method: In a quasi-experimental design, 48 medical staff who participated in operations during the period from November 2004 to February 2005 had hand washing using the two kinds of hand disinfectants: 7.5% povidone-iodine and the ethyl alcohol-CHG mixture. Their palms were swabbed and cultured just after hand washing and again after taking dff sterile gloves after the operation. The number of colonies from the two occasions were counted and compared. Result: The number of general bacillus increased significantly in the group using 7.5% povidone-iodine compared to that in the group using the ethyl alcohol-CHG mixture. The number of general bacillus increased signficantly in doctors compared to that in nurses. The factors affecting the increase of the number of general bacillus were disinfectants and medical personnel. The number of general bacillus was expected to increase 9.41 times with 7.5% povidone-iodine than with the ethyl alcohol-CHG mixture and 14.87 times in doctors than in nurses. Conclusion: This study shows that the ethyl alcogol-CHG mixture has a stronger hand disinfection effect than 7.5% povidone iodine. Thus we need to change the hand disinfectant used in operating rooms as soon as possible in order to minimize the infection of wounds resulting from operations.
