        What Has Language Proficiency Got to Do with Accommodation in Interviewer- Interviewee Interaction?

This paper takes a qualitative and microanalytic approach to the analysis of Korean oral proficiency interview (OPI) discourse to (a) examine native-speaker (NS) interviewer accommodation behaviors during OPIs and (b) effects of non-native- speaker proficiency level on OPI interaction discourse patterns. 10-minute segments, each, from a set of five demonstration Korean OPIs were used as the data for this study. Based on previous studies, a list of accommodative behaviors used by NS interviewers upon perceiving communicative breakdowns during OPIs was created, with modification, to identify and classify such behaviors. The results show that (1) not all accommodative behaviors in the list were employed and that (2) there was a difference in an average number of accommodative behaviors used between the low and high proficiency groups.

        한국어 교육학 양적 연구의 질: 연구 보고 관행을 중심으로

        본 연구는 2017년에서 2020년까지의 4년의 기간 동안 한국어교육에 게재된 양적 한국어 교육학 연구(N = 67)의 질을 연구 보고 관행의 측면에서 분석한 논문이다. 심리학과 제2 언어 연구 분야의 기존 양적 연구 보고 기준 또는 지침에 대해 논의하고 비교 목적으로 코딩 체계를 채택한 Plonsky(2013)를 자세히 고찰한다. 분석의 주요 결과는 다음과 같다: (1) 기술 통계: 분석된 연구의 16%와 4%는 효과 크기와 신뢰 구간을 각각 보고했고, 평균과 표준편차를 모두 보고한 연구는 64%였음, (2) 추론 통계: 논문의 57%는 정확한 p값을 보고했고, 평균 기반 분석에 기반을 둔 F값과 t값은 각각 27%와 33%의 논문에서 보고되었음; (3) 기타 보고 관행: 단 하나의 연구만이 연구 질문과 가설을 모두 보고했고, 사용된 통계 분석 유형에 대한 가정을 확인한 연구는 21%에 불과했다. 본 논문은 연구의 한계점, 향후 연구에 대한 시사점 및 한국어 교육학 분야의 연구의 질 개선 방안으로 마무리된다. This study analyzes the study quality, in terms of reporting practices, of quantitative TKSOL (Teaching Korean to Speakers of Other Languages) research (N = 67) published from 2017 to 2020 in Korean Language Education. It discusses the existing quantitative research reporting standards or guidelines from the disciplines of Psychology and Second Language Studies and reviews Plonsky (2013) in detail from which a coding scheme has been adopted for a comparison purpose. The main results of the analysis are as follows: (1) descriptive statistics: 16% and 4% of the studies analyzed reported effect sizes and confidence intervals, respectively, compared to the number of studies reporting both means and standard deviations (i.e., 64%); (2) inferential statistics: 57% of the studies reported exact ps, and Fs and ts, based on means-based analyses, were reported in the 27% and 33% of the studies, respectively; and (3) other reporting practices: only one study reported both research questions and hypotheses, and only 21% of the studies checked assumptions for the types of statistical analysis used. This paper ends with the limitations of the current study and the suggestions for future research as well as ways to improve the quality of research in the field.

        Characterizing Organelles in Live Stem Cells Using Label-Free Optical Diffraction Tomography

        Label-free optical diffraction tomography (ODT), an imaging technology that does not require fluorescent labeling or other pre-processing, can overcome the limitations of conventional cell imaging technologies, such as fluorescence and electron microscopy. In this study, we used ODT to characterize the cellular organelles of three different stem cells-namely, human liver derived stem cell, human umbilical cord matrix derived mesenchymal stem cell, and human induced pluripotent stem cell-based on their refractive index and volume of organelles. The physical property of each stem cell was compared with that of fibroblast. Based on our findings, the characteristic physical properties of specific stem cells can be quantitatively distinguished based on their refractive index and volume of cellular organelles. Altogether, the method employed herein could aid in the distinction of living stem cells from normal cells without the use of fluorescence or specific biomarkers.

      • Reading Single DNA with DNA Polymerase Followed by Atomic Force Microscopy

        <P>The importance of DNA sequencing in the life sciences and personalized medicine is continually increasing. Single-molecule sequencing methods have been developed to analyze DNA directly without the need for amplification. Here, we present a new approach to sequencing single DNA molecules using atomic force microscopy (AFM). In our approach, four surface-conjugated nucleotides were examined sequentially with a DNA polymerase-immobilized AFM tip. By observing the specific rupture events upon examination of a matching nucleotide, we could determine the template base bound in the polymerase’s active site. The subsequent incorporation of the complementary base in solution enabled the next base to be read.         A new higher-order one-dimensional beam theory for thin-walled closed beams is proposed. In order to overcome the limitation of conventional beam theories not suitable for thin-walled beam analysis, we develop a new beam theory taking into account local sectional deformations such as warping and distortion. The present theory is appicable for both straight and curved box beams. The appication of the present theory is expected to be very useful for automobile body design, especially at an early design phase.

        Material Characterization of Single Crystalline Cu Subjected to High Strain Rates and High Temperatures for Multiscale Simulation

        The material characterization of single crystalline Cu columns was numerically carried out at the submicroscopic level. A molecular dynamics (MD) simulation was employed using the embedded-atom method (EAM) interatomic potential between a pair of Cu atoms to describe the interactions among Cu atoms. First, the relationship between mechanical properties and factors affecting their behavior were numerically investigated using a crystal structure including several defects. The factors were specimen size, strain rate, and temperature. As the specimen size increased the normalized yield stress decreased, which was similar to results obtained at other length-scale. The yield stress tended to lead to exponential strain rate-hardening and a linear temperature-softening. Next, material characterization was conducted based on these results. These computational results can lead to the development of an in silico platform to characterize material properties and MD simulation can lay the groundwork for multi-scale modeling and simulation.         A familial case of limb-girdle muscular dystrophy with CAV3 mutation

        Limb-girdle muscular dystrophy (LGMD) is a group of muscular dystrophies that has extremely heterogeneous clinical fea-tures and genetic background. The caveolin-3 gene (CAV3) is one of the causative genes. LGMD appears as a clinical contin-uum, from isolated skeletal muscle involvement to long QT syndrome. Here we report two patients without apparent muscle weakness in a family with CAV3 mutation.A 7-month-old Korean boy visited our muscle clinic because of an incidental ἀnding of elevated serum creatine kinase (CK) concentration (680 IU/L, reference range, 20-270 IU/L) without clinical symptoms. The patient was born after an uneventful pregnancy and showed normal developmental milestones. He developed pseudohypertrophy of his calf muscle during the follow-up. We obtained a muscle biopsy at age 14 months, which showed size variations and degenerating/regenerating myo-ἀbers with endomysial ἀbrosis and immunohistochemical evidence of normal dystrophin. Under the impression of LGMD, we performed target panel sequencing and identiἀed a heterozygous in-frame mutation of CAV3, c.307_312delGTGGTG (p.Val103_Val104del). Immunohistochemical staining of muscle indicated complete loss of caveolin-3 compared with normal control muscle, which supported the variant’s pathogenicity. We performed segregation analysis and found that the patient’s mother had the same variant with elevated serum CK level (972 IU/L). We report on autosomal dominant familial caveolinopathy caused by a pathogenic variant in CAV3, which was asymptom-atic until the fourth decade. This case highlights the utility of next generation sequencing in the diagnosis of muscular dystro-phies and the additive role of muscle biopsy to conἀrm the variants.

      • Development of stress-strength study for automatic transmission parking system

        A parking system sends hydraulic and electrical signal when drivers operate shift lever. A vehicle will move forward and backward or will be stopped and controlled by the signal. A vehicle stop at the parking position is required in a variety of conditions. (Flat road, slope,* ratchet ing, etc.) Among the conditions, during the ratcheting, the generated stress varies depending on the input condition of parts and the vehicle speed. Therefore, the balance between the input condition and strength is important, and also requires the verification for full range of ratcheting. Until now, we ensured it by experiment considering ratcheting. In this study, an analysis tool that could predict similarly to experiment results was developed. By the tool, the time and cost for development can save by eliminating or reducing the verification of experiment.
