<▼1><P>A stretchable transparent electrode was achieved with rationally-controlled ultra-long copper nanowires and low-temperature direct spray coating.</P></▼1><▼2><P>The environmentally benign synthesis of ultra-long copper nanowires with successful control of diameter and length for stretchable transparent conducting electrodes (TCEs) is reported. Ultra-long copper nanowires (CuNWs) with an average length of 92.5 μm (maximum length up to 260 μm) and an average diameter of 47 nm were synthesized using environmentally friendly water–alcohol mixtures and l-ascorbic acid as a reducing agent. A facile removal of insulating surface layers, such as organic capping molecules and copper oxide/hydroxide, by short-chain organic acid treatment allowed low contact resistance between the CuNWs without post-reductive treatment at elevated temperatures. The CuNWs were directly spray-coated on glass or polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) at a low processing temperature of 130 °C. The CuNW TCE on a glass substrate exhibited a low sheet resistance of 23.1 Ohm sq<SUP>−1</SUP> and a high optical transmittance of 84.1% at 550 nm. Furthermore, the CuNWs were directly spray-coated on stretchable PDMS, which showed a low sheet resistance of 4.1 Ohm sq<SUP>−1</SUP> and a high optical transmittance of 70% at 550 nm.</P></▼2>

We propose a new technique for autonomous navigation and travelling of mobile robot based on ultrasonic sensors through the narrow labyrinth that leave only distance of a few centimeters on each side between the guides and the robot. In our current implementation the ultrasonic sensor system fires at a rate of 100 ms, that is, each of the 8 sensors fires once during each 100 ms interval. This is a very good firing rate, implemented here for optimal performance. This paper presents an extensively tested and verified solution to the problem of obstacle avoidance. Our solution is based on the optimal placement of ultrasonic sensors at strategic locations around the robot. Both the sensor location and the associated navigation algorithm are defined in such a way that only the accurate radial sonar data is used for accurate travelling.

<P>Activated M1 microglia secrete proinflammatory cytokines into damaged brain areas. The present study examined activated M1 microglial morphology and expression in the hippocampal Cornu Ammonis (CA) 1 region, which is vulnerable to transient ischemia. Transient cerebral ischemia was performed for 5 min in gerbils, and neuronal death in the CA1 region following transient cerebral ischemia was confirmed using cresyl violet staining, neuronal nuclear antigen immunohistochemistry and Fluoro-Jade B histofluorescent staining. In addition, CA1 regions were stained for cluster of differentiation (CD) 74, a marker for activated M1 microglia and a ligand for macrophage migration inhibitory factor In sham-operated animals, no CD74 immunoreactivity was observed in the hippocampal CA1 region. CD74 immunoreactivity was not observed in the hippocampal CA1 region until 3 days post-ischemic insult; however, elevated CD74 immunoreactivity was detected in the CA1 region from 5 days post-ischemia. Double immunofluorescence staining for CD74 and ionized calcium-binding adapter molecule 1, a marker for M1 microglial cells, confirmed the expression of CD74 on this microglial subtype. These results indicated that M1 microglia are activated late in the hippocampal CA1 region following ischemic stroke. Therefore, optimizing the timing of therapeutic intervention may reduce activated M1 microglial-induced neuronal damage.</P>

Background: The Model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) has been widely used for predicting short term mortality in cirrhotic patients and employed for deceased donor liver allocation in the U.S. In year 2011, modification of MELD (Refit MELD) and MELDNa (Refit MELD-Na) was published (Gastroenterology 2011;140:1952-1960). We aimed to validate this for Korean patients with cirrhosis and ascites Methods: We retrospectively reviewed medical records of cirrhotic patients who admitted at konkuk university hospital from 2006 to 2010. Predictive value for 3 month mortality was compared between serum sodium (Na), Refit MELD, Refit MELD-Na, Child-Pugh score. Comparison was done by calculating area under receiver operating curve (AUROC). Results: Total 469 patients were enrolled and there were 60 deaths and 19 patients were performed liver transplantation (LT) within 3 month. Male patients were 358 patients (76.3%) and alcohol was the most common cause of cirrhosis (n=223, 47.5%). The most common cause of death was variceal bleeding (n=29, 48.3%) and hepatic failure was the next (n=27, 45.0%). After exclude patients who performed LT, 450 patients were analysed. AUROCs of Na, Refit MELD, Refit MELD-Na and Child-Pugh score were 0.636, 0.813, 0.776 and 0.771 respectively. There were significant differences between scores except between Refit MELD and Child-Pugh score (P=0.092), between Refit MELd-Na and Child-Pugh score (P=0.811). If analysis was performed in only patients with refractory ascites (n=109), AUROCs were 0.681, 0.801, 0.783 and 0.708 respectively. There were no significant differences between scores except between Refit MELD and Chld-Pugh score (P=0.032). Conclusions: Refit MELD and Refit MELD-Na showed good predictability for 3 month mortality in patients with cirrhosis and ascites. However, Refit MELD-Na is not a better predictor than Refit MELD although hyponatremia is related with mortality in cirrhotic patients with ascites.

Indium hydroxide powders were synthesized using indium nitride, and the characteristics of the indium hydroxide powder were investigated according to the precipitate aging time and the pH and concentration of the liquid synthesis medium. Indium hydroxide (In(OH)3) and indium oxide hydroxide (InOOH) phases co-existed in all conditions studied here. The crystallite size of In(OH)3 was more dependent on the concentration and pH of the reaction medium compared to that of InOOH. Hence, the relative crystallite scale of In(OH)3 increased with increasing concentration and pH of the reaction liquid more than that of in InOOH. Although the crystallite size did not change much with an increase of precipitate aging time, the specific surface area decreased greatly. Such results can aid in the synthesis of indium oxide particles that are used for producing ITO targets.

Purpose: This study investigated the relationship between height and psychopathology in community children with relatively short stature according to the parents’ reports. Also, the matter of parental concern about child’s height was explored. Methods: The child behavior checklist (CBCL), the Brief Encounter Psychosocial Instrument (BEPSI), and the child-health questionnaire-parent form 50 (CHQ-PF50) were administered to 423 parents (from elementary and middle school children’s) in Gangnam, South Korea. Subjects were divided into three groups; (1) relatively short (n=30), (2) average stature (n=131), (3) relatively tall (n=153). CBCL, BEPSI, and CHQPF50 scores were compared among three groups. Results: There were no significant differences in psychosocial burden associated with relatively short stature measured by Korean version of the BEPSI and Korean version of the CBCL scores among three groups. But general health perception score of relatively short was significantly lower than that of nonshort on the CHQPF50. Also, they were more used complementary medicines, milk and growth hormone compared to the nonshort. The parents’ expected height of their children was 180.6±3.5 cm for boys and 166.7±3.5 cm for girls. This is respectively 90 percentile and 75–90 percentile for the Korean standard adult height. Conclusion: Our study shows that in Korea, Parents tended to regard relatively short children as having health problems. Also, the parental expectation for their child’s attainable height is unrealistically tall, mostly due to lack of correct medical information.
