Otitis media with effusion (OME) is one of the most common disease in children but its pathogenesis is not clear. In particular the role of allergy has revealed conflicting support with widely varing opinions as to its importance. Within recent years, striking biochemical and immunochemical analytic techniques have opened a new approach the study of otitis media with effusion. So we focused on distributions of IgE in adenoid tissue and serum IgE levels. Authors compared the serum IgE and the distribution of IgE in adenoid tissue between the 20 patients underwent tonsillectomy, adenoidectomy and ventilating tube insertion and control group of 11 patients underwent tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy. The results were as follows; 1. In the distribution of IgE in adenoid tissue, there was a significant increase in the group of patients with OME compared to the control group (P<0.01). 2. In the analysis of serum IgE levels, the levels of IgE in the OME patients an control group were higher than normal level, although the level of IgE in the OME patients were less than that of control group, there was no significance P>0.05).

Background : In recent years gonorrhoea has been panendemic and remains one of the most common Sexually Transmitted Diseases in the world, especially in developing countries. Objective & Method : For the detection of a more effective therapeutic regimen and assessing the prevalence of Penicillinase Producing Neisseria Gonorrhoeae(PPNG), Ive have been trying to study the patients who have visited the VD Clinic of Choong-Ku Public Health Center in Seoul since 1980 by means of the chromogenic cephalosporin method. Results : In 1994, 168 strains of N. gonorrhoeae were isolated, among which 109 (64,9% ) were PPNG. Conclustion : Our results suggests that the prevalence of PPNG in Seoul is still increasing.

<P>A band-offset-based unified-RAM (URAM) cell fabricated on a Si/Si<SUB>1-y</SUB>C<SUB>y</SUB> substrate is presented for the fusion of a nonvolatile memory (NVM) and a capacitorless 1T-DRAM. An oxide/nitride/oxide (O/N/O) gate dielectric and a floating-body are combined in a FinFET structure to perform URAM operation in a single transistor. The O/N/O layer is utilized as a charge trap layer for NVM, and the floating-body is used as an excess hole storage node for capacitorless 1T-DRAM. The introduction of a pseudomorphic SiC-based heteroepitaxial layer into the Si substrate provides band offset in a valence band. The FinFET fabricated on the energy-band-engineered Si<SUB>1-y</SUB>C<SUB>y</SUB> substrate allows hole accumulation in the channel for 1T-DRAM. The band-engineered URAM yields a cost-effective process that is compatible with a conventional body-tied FinFET SONOS. The fabricated URAM shows highly reliable NVM and high-speed 1T-DRAM operations in a single memory cell.</P>
Double-Gate Nanowire Field Effect Transistor for a Biosensor

<P>A silicon nanowire field effect transistor (FET) straddled by the double-gate was demonstrated for biosensor application. The separated double-gates, G1 (primary) and G2 (secondary), allow independent voltage control to modulate channel potential. Therefore, the detection sensitivity was enhanced by the use of G2. By applying weakly positive bias to G2, the sensing window was significantly broadened compared to the case of employing G1 only, which is nominally used in conventional nanowire FET-based biosensors. The charge effect arising from biomolecules was also analyzed. Background/Aims: The optimal treatment (Tx) for epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)-mutant non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients with brain metastasis (BM) remains to be determined. Methods: A retrospective review was conducted on 77 NSCLC patients with synchronous BM who underwent first-line EGFR-tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) Tx. The outcomes of patients were analyzed according to the clinicopathological characteristics including local Tx modalities. Results: Fifty-nine patients underwent local Tx for BM (gamma knife surgery [GKS], 37; whole brain radiotherapy [WBRT], 18; others, four) concurrently or sequentially with EGFR-TKI. Patients treated with TKI alone showed significantly lower incidence of central nervous system (CNS) symptoms. The median progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) after the initiation of EGFR-TKI for all patients were 9 and 19 months, respectively. In 60 patients with follow-up brain imaging, the median time to CNS progression was 15 months. Patients with EGFR exon 19 deletion had a significantly longer median OS than those with other mutations including L858R (23 months vs. 17 months). Other clinical characteristics, including CNS symptoms, number of BM, and the use of local Tx were not associated with OS, as well as PFS. In terms of the local optimal Tx modality, no difference was found between GKS and WBRT in the OS and PFS. Conclusions: This study suggests that EGFR-TKI may result in a favorable outcome in NSCLC patients with synchronous BM, especially in deletion 19 mutant, regardless of the extent of BM lesions or local Tx modalities. Patients with asymptomatic BM can be treated with EGFR-TKI and careful surveillance.

In the present study, the characteristics on the internal flow and heat transfer of the dimple-type plate heat exchanger were numerically investigated. For the numerical analysis, the conjugate heat transfer analysis between hot fluid-separating plate-cold fluid was performed using the periodic boundary condition at the center area of the plate and appropriate inlet and outlet conditions for the two streams. The numerical results were validated by the comparison with the experimental data. From these results, the correlations of the Colburn j-factor for the heat transfer and the Fanning f-factor for the flow friction were obtained. The present results could be applicable for the optimal design of dimple-type plate heat exchanger.

In the present study, a numerical simulation for the diffusion of hydrogen jet in a enclosure was performed to aid the leakage test of the hydrogen for the safety of the hydrogen vehicle. The temporal and spatial distributions of the hydrogen concentration in the test chamber are predicted from the present numerical analyses. Flammable region of 4-74% and explosive region of 18-59% hydrogen by volume was identified from the present results. Factors influencing the diffusion of the hydrogen jet were examined to evaluate the effectiveness of forced ventilation for relieving the accumulation of the leaked hydrogen gas in the chamber, which include location of open windows, size of leakage nozzle, and leakage rate among others. The distribution of the concentration of the leaked hydrogen for various cases can be used as a database in various applications for the hydrogen safety.
