      • Organophosphate insecticide resistance of Anopheles sinensis from two malaria occurrence areas in ROK, 2016

        Anopheles sinensis is an important vector for Plasmodium vivax and thus has been targeted with organophosphates in Republic of Korea. Using the direct contact mortality bioassay, two field populations of An. sinensis from Paju-si and Yeoncheon-gun were characterized for their resistance to organophosphats with RR ratio values (Resistant ratio to imidacloprid) of 446.9 to 756.3 folds and 502.1 to 861.7 folds, respectively. Genomic DNA was used for Allele-specific PCR (AS-PCR) genotyping of the acethylcholine esterase to detect Gly119Ser mutations. The homozygous susceptible Ser/Ser genotype in Paju-si and Yeoncheon-gun was 20.0% and 20.9% and the resistance genotypes were 80.0% and 79.1%, respectively. The homozygous Gly/Ser resistance genotype was the most prevalent as 60.7% in Paju-si and 41.9% in Yeoncheon-gun. Hence, this study suggests that malaria vector control programs should be prepared for the management of organophosphate insecticide resistance.

        Refractive Predictability between Standard and Total Keratometry during the Femtosecond Laser-Assisted Cataract Surgery with Monofocal Intraocular Lens with Enhanced Intermediate Function

        Purpose: We aimed to compare the accuracy of the intraocular lens (IOL) calculation formula using the standard keratometry (K) and total K (TK) during the femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery (FLACS) with a monofocal IOL with enhanced intermediate function using currently used formulas. Methods: A retrospective review of 125 eyes from 125 patients who had undergone FLACS with implantation of monofocal IOL with enhanced intermediate function was conducted. The predicted refractive power was calculated using an optical biometer (IOLmaster 700) according to the K and TK in the Barrett Universal II, SRK/T, Haigis, and Holladay 2 formulas. Absolute prediction error (APE) obtained from the actual postoperative refractive outcomes and the refractive error predicted in each formula was compared one month after surgery. Results: Mean APE ranged between 0.29 and 0.39 diopters (D) regardless of the calculation formula and the method of measuring corneal curvature. Significant differences were observed in the APE from the four formulas and the two keratometric measurements (p = 0.014). In a total of 125 eyes from 125 patients, the mean APE was lowest with the Barrett Universal II formula. Across all formulas, both the mean APE and the median APE tended to be lower for K than for TK, although there was no significant difference. Approximately 70% to 80% of the patients were included within 0.5 D of the refractive error across all formulas. The percentage of eyes within 0.5 D of APE outcomes was not statistically different between the K and TK data when using each formula. Conclusions: Keratometric measurements considering the poster corneal curvature did not show any additional advantages when implanting the monofocal IOL with enhanced intermediate function during the FLACS.

        Aedes albopictus is an important vector for yellow fever, dengue fever, chikungunya fever and Zika virus. This mosquitohas been exposed to organophosphates and pyrethroids in Republic of Korea for a long time. Using the direct contactmortality bioassay, susceptibility strain and two field populations of Ae. albopictus from Busan, and Damyang. Insecticidalproperty were indicated to RR ratio values (Resistant ratio to strain of susceptibility) of LC50 (Midian Lethal concentration)to organophosphats and pyrethroids. Genomic DNA was used for Allele-specific PCR (AS-PCR) genotyping of the acethylcholineesterase to detect Gly119Ser mutations and kdr gene to detect Phe1534Cys mutations. Detoxification enzyme activitiesof Ae. albopictus from Busan and Damyang were assessed using microplate enzyme activity assays. Activities of fourdetoxification enzymes eg., glutathione S-transferase(GST), Non specific esterases (α-naphthyl acetate and β-naphthyl acetate),and cytochrome C oxidase were determined for each Ae. albopictus strain. This study might suggest that Ae. albopictuscontrol programs should be prepared for the management of organophosphate and pyrethroid insecticide resistance.

      • High hydrostatic pressure treatment for manufacturing of red bean powder: A comparison with the thermal treatment

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The traditional process of manufacturing red bean powder (RBP) using high temperature and extensive cooking causes quality changes, such as an off-flavor, destruction of colors, and a reduced nutritional value of the product. In this study, RBP was manufactured using a novel process of wet grinding, high hydrostatic pressure (HHP), and freeze-drying. The impact of HHP treatment in this innovative manufacturing process on the microbial count, antioxidant activity, anti-nutritional factors, and physicochemical properties of RBP was evaluated by comparison with the conventional method of thermal treatment. Microbial populations in final RBP were reduced to 1.83, 1.55, and 1.05 log CFU/g when treated using HHP 400, 500, and 600 MPa, respectively. HHP treatment improved the nutritional profile and reduced the effects of anti-nutritional factors in RBP. The most effective reduction of trypsin inhibitor activity and phytic acid content was achieved using HHP at 600 MPa for 5 min. Total phenols, flavonoids, proanthocyanidins and total antioxidant capacity in HHP treated RBP were more effectively preserved than in thermally treated RBP. Preparation of RBP using a novel manufacturing process involving HHP treatment rather than a thermal treatment improved physico-chemical and functional properties and enhanced microbiological safety.</P> <P><B>Highlights for review</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Red bean powder was manufactured using a novel process. </LI> <LI> Process included wet grinding, high hydrostatic pressure (HHP), and freeze-drying. </LI> <LI> HHP effectively disinfected naturally occurring microorganisms in red bean powder. </LI> <LI> Nutritional and functional properties of red bean powder were effectively preserved. </LI> </UL> </P>

        자율적 학습공동체 프로그램이 대학생의 전문가 역량 및 학교태도에 미치는 영향

        본 연구는 다양한 주제와 분야의 학습활동을 목적으로 대학에서 자율적으로 구성된 학습공동체가 대학생들의 역량에 어떤 영향을 미칠 수 있는지 확인하기 위해 수행되었다. C대학교에서 2016년에 5월부터 12월까지 진행된 학습공동체 프로그램의 참여 학생 792명이 연구에 참여하였다. 참여 학생들에게 2차에 걸친 설문조사를 통해 대학생 핵심역량과 학업역량, 전문가 역량, 그리고 학교태도를 측정 자료로 수집하였다. 수집된 자료를 바탕으로 학생들의 프로그램 참여 전후의 점수 변화를 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 주제와 활동목적의 다양성에도 불구하고 학습공동체에 참여했던 학생들은 활동 초반보다 활동 종료 시점에 전문가 역량이 향상되었다. 또한 학생들의 학교에 대한 태도 역시 활동 초반 보다 활동 종료 시점에 긍정적인 방향으로 변화하였다. 학생들의 이러한 전문가 역량 향상 결과는 학생의 개인 역량 수준에 따라 상이하게 나타났다. 상대적으로 낮은 수준의 역량을 가진 것으로 평가된 학생들이 높은 역량을 가진 것으로 평가된 학생들 보다 전문가 역량이 크게 향상되는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 대학생들의 학교에 대한 태도에서도 동일한 양상으로 관찰되었다. 본 연구의 결과는 수업 내 활동이나 단일한 목적을 위해 구성된 학습공동체가 아닌 다양한 목적을 위해 구성된 이질적인 학습공동체들도 공동체 활동만으로도 학생들이 공통적으로 전문가 역량을 향상시킬 수 있으며, 이런 학습공동체 프로그램은 학생 개인뿐만이 아니라 학교 조직에 대한 인식에도 긍정적 영향을 미칠 수 있다는 사실을 제안하였다. This study aimed to analyse and evaluate the effect of learning communities on college students’ professional competence. Total 792 students participated in survey research in 2016 learning community program at ‘C’ University. The methodology for analysis was to compare the change of professional competence between pretest and posttest. The findings are as follows. First, the scores of professional competence in posttest were significantly higher than in pretest. Second, the attitudes for college were progressed toward positive side at the end of program. Finally, the effects of learning community program differed in students’ gender, level of students’ competences. Female students showed the result of more improvement than male students through activity on learning community. And students in lower competency group had improved more than higher group students in professional competence. In addition, the patterns of attitudes for college results were identical. These results indicate that learning community in college have an beneficial influence on student’s competence as well as attitudes for college. Theoretical implications were discussed.

      • Pyrethroid and organophosphate pesticide resistance of Aedes albopictus (Diptera: Culicidae) from two areas of South Korea

        Imported 313 cases of Dengue fever and 16 cases of Zika virus disease were reported in the ROK during 2016. Aedesalbopictus has been reported as a major vector mosquito for Dengue and Zika virus. Various class of pesticides havebeen used locally different pesticide class. To investigate the pyrethroid and organophosphate pesticide resistance, genomicDNA was used for Allele-specific PCR (AS-PCR) genotyping of the acethylcholine esterase to detect Gly119Ser mutationsand kdr gene to detect Phe1534Cys mutations. Detoxification enzyme activities were assessed using Ae. albopictus fromYeosu and Jeju. Activities of four detoxification enzymes eg., glutathione S-transferase (GST), Non specific esterases (α-naphthylacetate and β-naphthyl acetate), and cytochrome C oxidase were determined for each Ae. albopictus strain. In our studies,Ae. albopictus showed only susceptible sequences for AchE and kdr. Activity of cytochrome P-450 and non specific esterasewas higher in a field population than a laboratory strain, except for GST. This study might be helpful to understandthe insecticidal susceptibility and resistant for effective vector mosquito control program.

        동료 튜터링 프로그램 유형이 대학생의 학업성취에 미치는 효과:

        본 연구는 대학생 동료 튜터링 프로그램의 형태가 대학생의 학업성취에 미치는 영향을 평가하고자 진행되었다. C대학에서 시행되고 있는 튜터링 프로그램에 2014년 1학기부터 2015년 2학기까지 참여한 886명 학생들의 자료가 조사 분석에 포함되 었다. 두 형태의 동료 튜터링 프로그램에 참여한 학생들을 대상으로 튜터링 참여 전과 후의 학업성취 변화를 분석하였다. 전체 학생들의 과목 평점평균(GPA) 분석 결과, 프로그램을 통해 튜터링을 받은 교과목은 본인의 다른 수강과목 평균보다 높은 것으로 나타났다. 또한 프로그램에 참가한 학생들의 학기 평점은 튜터링 프로그램을 참여하기 전보다 참여한 후 향상된 것으로 나타났다. 학생들의 성적 향상 추이는 성별과 전공 및 학년에 따라 상이한 것으로 드러났다. 또한 동료 튜터링 프로그램 형태에 따라 학생들의 성적 향상 추이 역시 다르게 나타났다. 본 연구를 통해 대학에서 학생들에게 교과목에 대한 동료 튜터링 프로그램으로 보충학습을 지원하는 경우, 학생 특성과 튜터링의 형태를 고려해야할 필요성이 확인되었다 This study aimed to analyse and evaluate the effect of types of peer tutoring program on academic achievement in subjects. Total 886 students from 2014 to 2015 were involved with analysis. The methodology for analysis was to compare the differences between self-directed tutoring and collaborative tutoring before and after tutoring program in terms of academic achievements. The findings are as follows. First, the performance for tutoring subjects in tests were significantly better than rest of subjects compared with students’ personal GPA. Second, academic achievement level of students were facilitated after peer tutoring program. In addition, the effect of peer tutoring program differed in students’ gender, majors, and grades. And types of peer tutoring resulted in differential effects on academic achievement. These results indicate that peer tutoring program have an influence on student’s academic performance and college should consider student’s characteristics and types of tutoring.

      • Screening of potential probiotic and anti-diabetic activities of Lactobacillus spp. from kimchi

        The research on novel probiotic bacteria has been increased with the market expansion of the global health functional food and medicine. In this study, we screened two Lactobacillus pentosus HA4-CK and JW32-CK, and a Lactobacillus plantarum HA30-CK from kimchi, and evaluated their probiotic activities and inhibition against carbohydrate hydrolyzing enzymes. Through the 16s rRNA gene sequencing, they revealed similarities with L. pentosus DSM 20314 of 99.65% for HA4-CK and 99.79% for JW32-CK, and L. plantarum ATCC 14917 of 99.79% for HA30-CK. Our selected strains, HA4-CK, HA30-CK, and JW32-CK survived more than 50% when they incubated in each 0.1% pepsin and 0.3% bile salt solution at 37℃ for 3h. They showed negative reactions in β-hemolysis tests. All selected strains inhibited the growth of Escherichia coli, E. coli O157:H7, Bacillus cereus, and Staphylococcus aureus. They showed strong α-glucosidase inhibitory activity and weak α-amylase inhibitory activity compared to acarbose. Therefore, our finding strains might be useful alternatives to prevent diabetes as well as to improve intestinal balance.
