An Adventist Response to African Traditional Religion

Contextualizing Christianity in a way that is culturally appropriate but biblically faithful is an on-going challenge. This article traces the encounter of Christianity with African Traditional Religion (ATR) and its four components of transcendence: God, lesser gods, ancestors and power objects. Jesus Christ, Scripture and the Devil were new components brought by Christianity. Suggestions are made about how the problems of syncretism and dual allegiance can be addressed.

Purpose: The goals of this study were to identify whether conservative treatment with antibiotics in right colonic divertic- ulitis (RCD) patients, our empirical method used until now, is adequate and to determine how the natural history of RCD is affected by conservative treatment. Methods: This study was designed as a case-control study. Group I was comprised of 12 patients who were managed con- servatively, and clinical data were retrospectively collected. In group II, a total of 49 patients, diagnosed by using diagnos- tic criteria for RCD and managed conservatively, were prospectively included. Results: The period of fasting was 2.7 days, and the hospital stay was 4.6 days in all patients. The intravenous and the oral an- tibiotic periods were 3.8 days and 9.8 days, respectively. There were no statistically significant differences in treatment results between the two groups except the duration of fasting and the hospitalization, and there were no complications under conser- vative treatment. Eight patients (13.1%) had recurrent diverticulitis during the follow-up period. The recurrence risk showed no significant difference between the groups. The RCD-free period after management was 60.1 months, and patients with recurrent RCD were treated by conservative treatment or laparoscopic surgery. Conclusion: Conservative treatment with antibiotics is the optimal treatment of choice for RCD and shows no increase in complications.

Fusarium oxysporum Schlechtend.:Fr is a cosmopolitan fungal pathogen (4) responsible for wit and cortical rot diseases of more than 100 economically important plant hosts (3). Genetic diversity within F. oxysporum has been categorized extensively by vegetative compatibility grouping in laboratories around the world. Detailed studies indicate that isolates belonging to the same vegetative compatibility group (VCG) typically possess very similar or identical multilocus haplotypes and belong to the same clonal lineage(19). VCG. therefore, can be good predictors of genetic similarity, clonal lineage. or both. In this communication, we propose a standardization of the system currently used for categorizing genetic diversity within this taxon. Our primary objective is to make the system more understandable and useful by reducing ambiguity and increasing the rigor with which the current system is applied. A secondary goal of this undertaking is to promote international communication and cooperation in this endeavor.

The Wide-Angle Polarimetric Camera (PolCam) is installed on the Korea's lunar orbiter, Danuri, which launched on August 5, 2022. The mission objectives of PolCam are to construct photometric maps at a wavelength of 336 nm and polarization maps at 461 and 748 nm, with a phase angle range of 0°-135° and a spatial resolution of less than 100 m. PolCam is an imager using the push-broom method and has two cameras, Cam 1 and Cam 2, with a viewing angle of 45° to the right and left of the spacecraft's direction of orbit. We conducted performance tests in a laboratory setting before installing PolCam's flight model on the spacecraft. We analyzed the CCD's dark current, flat-field frame, spot size, and light flux. The dark current was obtained during thermal / vacuum test with various temperatures and the flat-field frame data was also obtained with an integrating sphere and tungsten light bulb. We describe the calibration method and results in this study.
