      • Information Security in the Age of Algorithms

        Algorithms are now widely used in all areas of social life, building a new social picture and reality. As a technology based on big data modelling and analysis, algorithms are embedded in all aspects of information production and distribution by means of technology, and become an important force in the construction of information environment. Under the algorithmic logic of information dissemination, the visible and invisible are in fact influenced by the algorithm as an authoritative mediator and mediator. From Daniel Dayan's 'visibility' perspective, this paper examines the risks posed by algorithms in three areas: the risk of passive disclosure of personal privacy, the use and control of personal data by profit-seeking algorithms, and the polarisation of information cocoons and circles. The information security risk brought by algorithms is attempted to be tackled and improved from several aspects, such as constructing a 'trinity' information security strategy system; adhering to the mainstream value orientation and highlighting the rational balance of “tool-value” of algorithms; and bringing into play multiple mechanisms together with effects.

        中国继承法修改的热点问题

        The current Inheritance Law of China was enacted 28 years ago. The National People's Congress of China has included the modification of Inheritance Law in the legislative program of 2012 and 2013. Some well-known scholars have published a draft amendment of inheritance law. Among the latest drafts, one is drawn up by professor Yang Lixin and Yang Zhen etc (hereinafter referred to as Yang’s draft), and another one is by Professor Liang Huixing(hereinafter referred to as Liang’s draft). This article introduces and reviews the important hotspot issues on amending the Inheritance Law mainly in the light of these two drafts. Firstly, the range of estates should be broadened. Liang’s draft enlarges the range of estates by the approach of definition and exclusion. Besides using the same approach, Yang’s draft also enumerates some more types of estates, including the contractual operation right of rural land, the right to using land for construction and the virtual right on internet. Secondly, the scope and sequence of legal heirs should be adjusted. Many scholars thought that the current scope of the legal heirs is too narrow and suggested to add the heirs of Third order. Thirdly, the rules of the validity and forms of wills should be changed. Yang’s draft adds four more forms of wills: the printed will, the electronic data will, the video will and the sealed will. The mutual will of husband and wife is also recognized in Yang’s draft. Fourthly, the legal portion system should be established. Fifthly, the estate administrator system and the link rules of executors and administrators should be stipulated. Sixthly, the protection of creditors should be taken seriously. The heritage liquidation proceeding activated by unsatisfied creditors and the creditor’s right to cancel testator’s improper disposal of property in Yang’s draft are more desirable. Through the comparison between Liang’s draft and Yang’s draft on these six issues, the author concludes her own opinions. In conclusion, the modification of inheritance law is very complicated and will have a significant social impact, so more research has to be done so that the modification can be done in a proper way.

        Thermal buckling and dynamic characteristics of composite plates under pressure load

        The effect of geometrical nonlinearities due to pressure load on the thermal buckling and dynamic characteristics of composite plates are investigated in this paper, which is the main contribution of this research work. The mechanical behavior of the plate is described with the first-order shear deformation theory. The geometrical nonlinearity due to both thermal effect and pressure load is introduced in the finite element model of the plate via additional stiffness matrices. Thermal buckling and modal analysis of a four-sided simply supported rectangular composite plate under different pressure fields are conducted. Numerical results show that both the mode frequencies and critical buckling temperature of the plate rise with the increase of the pressure. The vibrational mode shapes change with the gradient pressure load field. The maximum buckled deflection point moves from the center to the place where is easier to reach compressive stress state under uniform thermal load. The pressure distribution has a significant effect on the buckling mode shapes of the plate.

        Advances in CRISPR-Cas systems for RNA targeting, tracking and editing

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeat (CRISPR)/CRISPR-associated protein (Cas) systems, especially type II (Cas9) systems, have been widely used in gene/genome targeting. Modifications of Cas9 enable these systems to become platforms for precise DNA manipulations. However, the utilization of CRISPR-Cas systems in RNA targeting remains preliminary. The discovery of type VI CRISPR-Cas systems (Cas13) shed light on RNA-guided RNA targeting. Cas13d, the smallest Cas13 protein, with a length of only ~930 amino acids, is a promising platform for RNA targeting compatible with viral delivery systems. Much effort has also been made to develop Cas9, Cas13a and Cas13b applications for RNA-guided RNA targeting. The discovery of new RNA-targeting CRISPR-Cas systems as well as the development of RNA-targeting platforms with Cas9 and Cas13 will promote RNA-targeting technology substantially. Here, we review new advances in RNA-targeting CRISPR-Cas systems as well as advances in applications of these systems in RNA targeting, tracking and editing. We also compare these Cas protein-based technologies with traditional technologies for RNA targeting, tracking and editing.         The Impact of the US-China Trade War on Chinese Firms' Investment

        We study the effects of the US-China trade war on Chinese firms’ investment using the detailed quarterly financial data of Chinese listed firms merged with firm-level Chinese customs data. We construct the firm-level measures of direct trade exposure and the financial measures of indirect exposures to the US-China trade tension using firms’ equity responses during the trade war escalation periods. We document that the trade war reduced Chinese firms’ investment by two percent. In particular, we find significant heterogeneous firms’ responses to the trade war, depending on their firm characteristics. Chinese firms that are more dependent on exports to the US have lower stock returns; large firms and state-owned firms suffer more compared to small firms and private-owned ones.

        Are opportunities to equalize elite high schools discriminatory? Evidence from a quasi-experimental design

        While education equality is considered crucial for broader social equality, policies that aim to equalize educational resources are sometimes suspected of discriminating against high achievers. Such potential discrimination should be examined empirically to provide robust evidence for policymakers and the broader public. Using a quasi-experimental design and longitudinal dataset, this paper reports on research which has investigated potential discrimination arising from China’s high school quota admission policy, which is considered a successful initiative for distributing high achievers across middle schools in ways that equalize achievement, and hence improves overall quality. The results presented in this paper indicate there is basically no such discrimination after controlling for self-selection bias. The paper also reveals the broader value of evaluating potential discrimination as part of similar forms of education development.

        Prediction of the transient energy response for complex vibro-acoustic systems

        As research works of the transient statistical energy analysis (TSEA) and transient local energy approach (TLEA) mostly focus on simple structures, TSEA and TLEA are adopted to quantify the transient response of a complex vibro-acoustic system at the mid-high frequency range in this paper. Numerical examples of a coupled oscillator system, an L-shaped plate, and a launch vehicle fairing model are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness and accuracy of TSEA and TLEA. The computational precision of TSEA and TLEA is verified by the analytical solution and finite element method. Furtherly, the transient energy responses of subsystems with different coupling ratios between subsystems are investigated. Results show that TLEA has a better performance than TSEA. With the increasing coupling ratio between subsystems, the rise time and peak energy of transient energy response of subsystems decrease gradually. Both ratios of rise time and peak energy predicted by TLEA to these of the TSEA increase as the rising of the coupling ratio.
