      • The influence of game genre on Internet gaming disorder

        Na, Euihyeon,Choi, Inyoung,Lee, Taek-Ho,Lee, Hyeseon,Rho, Mi Jung,Cho, Hyun,Jung, Dong Jin,Kim, Dai-Jin AKADEMIRI KIRDO 2017 JOURNAL OF BEHAVIOURAL ADDICTIONS Vol.6 No.2

<P><B>Background and aims</B></P><P>Although Internet gaming disorder (IGD) has been investigated in detail, minimal research has been conducted regarding the influence of different game genres on IGD. The aim of this study is to compare the characteristics of members of game genre-specific groups with IGD and to identify factors associated with IGD status in each group in a large sample of adults.</P><P><B>Methods</B></P><P>Internet games were categorized into four genres: real-time strategy games, massive multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPG), sport games, and first-person shooter (FPS) games. Participants (<I>n</I> = 2,923) who usually played one of these games completed an anonymous online survey that collected sociodemographic, game usage pattern, and psychopathological assessment data.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>MMORPG and FPS game players more frequently met the criteria for IGD than participants in the other two groups. Differences between the IGD-suspected gamers within the genre-specific groups were observed for a few items, such as average game-playing time and the subscales of the behavioral activation system; however, the factors that contributed to the development of IGD within each game genre-specific group were found to be considerably different.</P><P><B>Discussion and conclusions</B></P><P>The findings of this study suggest that IGD is a stable psychiatric diagnosis encompassing users of a broad range of game genres. In addition, the development of strategies for the prevention of and early intervention on individuals at high risk for developing IGD may require consideration of the distinct characteristics identified as effective predictors of IGD in users of each game genre.</P>

        스마트폰 중독

        나의현 ( Euihyeon Na ),김대진 ( Dai-jin Kim ) 대한내과학회 2016 대한내과학회지 Vol.91 No.3

Smartphones have significantly changed our lives and become a digital lifestyle hub. However, uncontrolled smartphone usage has created a new issue in global health, including a range of mental health concerns. Previous studies have proposed that excess use of a smartphone that interferes with daily life should be called “smartphone addiction”, which has similar core features to substance- related disorders (substance addiction) and known behavioral addictions. The aim of this review was to add to our understanding of smartphone addiction by presenting an overview of the research field. (Korean J Med 2016;91:245-249)

        중독질환의 수용전념치료

        나의현(Euihyeon Na) 한국중독정신의학회 2021 중독정신의학 Vol.25 No.1

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is one of the mostwell-known third wave cognitive behavioral therapies (CBTs)based on relational frame theory (RFT) and functional contextualism. From an ACT perspective, human suffering and psychopathologyresult from psychological inflexibility, which is drivenby experiential avoidance and cognitive fusion. Within the context, addiction is conceived as a component of the learned repertoireof behavior driven by psychological flexibility. Addictive behaviorsare remarkably effective, over the short term, for peopleto avoid their unwanted private events such as negative thoughts, affects, and physical sensations but also to make coherent consequencesin line with their verbal rules about behaviors andthemselves. However, addictive behaviors can cause great difficultieswith their values and disconnect from their life areas inthe long term. ACT can help people with addiction by fosteringpsychological flexibility and moving in the direction of a valuedlife. This review aims to introduce the pathology of addiction fromthe perspective of ACT and to discuss the possibility of use ofACT as a novel therapeutic approach to treating addiction with itskey features of addiction treatment processes in clinical settings.

Global consumption of energy drinks has prompted significant concerns regarding its associated risks. Adolescence marked by heightened consumption of these beverages coincides with a crucial period of brain development, raising apprehensions about the adverse impact of psychostimulants such as caffeine on this process. Moreover, emerging evidence underscores the link between energy drink use and mental health issues, compounded by heightened risk when combined with alcohol. This review adopts an addiction psychiatry lens to scrutinize the prevalence and implications of high-caffeine energy drink consumption among adolescents, offering insights into clinical practice responses.

금연치료의 장애물인 알코올 의존의 접근 방법

        나의현(Euihyeon Na),정조은(Jo-Eun Jeong),김대진(Dai-Jin Kim) 한국중독정신의학회 2015 중독정신의학 Vol.19 No.1

Smoking continues to be as great a hazard to global health as alcohol use. Tobacco (nicotine) and alcohol dependence share a high degree of co-morbidity and interact across many levels of analyses involving potentiated reinforcement. The co-use of these two addictive substances accelerates ‘synergistic adverse effects’, such as the development of various types of cancer and cognitive impairment. Accordingly, critical steps in the process of smoking cessation treatment may require an under-standing of the interaction between alcohol and tobacco dependence. This review discusses how to utilize knowledge of alcohol and tobacco interactions to encourage smoking cessation in alcohol-dependent smokers.

나의현,Na, Euihyeon 제주대학교 의과학연구소 2018 The Journal of Medicine and Life Science Vol.15 No.2

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a functional contextual intervention approach based on the behavioral theory on human language, which views human suffering as originating in psychological inflexibility fostered by cognitive fusion and experiential avoidance. Thus, the goal of ACT is to enhance psychological flexibility using six core processes including acceptance, cognitive defusion, self-as-context, contact with present moment, values clarification, and committed action. Recent clinical trials have suggested the efficacy for ACT in the treatment of various mental illness and psychological distress. The aim of this review is to offer more knowledge and better understanding of ACT by presenting its underlying principle and an overview of the research field.

      • The tendinous variations of extensor hallucis longus muscle: Focusing on the regional difference between Jeju island and peninsular Koreans

Inyoub Chang,Euihyeon Na,Ji Won Oh,Jinu Kim,Sang-Pil Yoon 대한체질인류학회 2021 대한체질인류학회 학술대회 연제 초록 Vol.64 No.-

From the evolutionary myology, the additional tendon of the extensor hallucis longus (EHL) muscle represents the sample of a new acquisition. We aimed to determine whether The EHL insertion pattern differs in Koreans according to demographic populations, especially between Jeju islanders and the Korean Peninsula inhabitants. We classified 69 adult Korean cadavers based on the number of the tendinous insertion of the EHL as Pattern I, Pattern II, and Pattern III. The ratio of the EHL muscle insertion patterns in adult cadaveric samples (n = 68) was compared between demographic populations. The proportion of Pattern I, Pattern II, and Pattern III of the EHL muscle was 30.4, 63.8, and 5.8%, respectively, further divided into 18.0 vs. 36.0%, 72.0 vs. 60.5%, 10.0 vs. 3.5% in Jeju islanders vs. peninsular Koreans. There was a considerable difference in the insertion Patterns of the EHL muscle in each regional group (p = 0.03), but not in each gender, age, and body sides of lower limbs. The findings of this study indicate that Pattern II was the most common among the tendinous insertion of the EHL muscle in Koreans. Furthermore, the distribution of the EHL insertion patterns was significantly different between Jeju islanders and peninsular Koreans.

Examining Patterns of Polypharmacy in Bipolar Disorder: Findings from the REAP-BD, Korea

        Kiwon Kim,Hyunju Yang,Euihyeon Na,Hoseon Lee,Ok-Jin Jang,Hyung-Jun Yoon,Hong Seok Oh,Byung-Joo Ham,Seon-Cheol Park,Shih-Ku Lin,Chay Hoon Tan,Naotaka Shinfuku,Yong Chon Park 대한신경정신의학회 2019 PSYCHIATRY INVESTIGATION Vol.16 No.5

Based on Korean data from the Research on Asian Psychotropic Prescription Pattern for Bipolar Disorder, this study tried to present prescription patterns in biopolar disorder (BD) and its associated clinical features. Based on the information obtained from the study with structured questions, the tendency of prescription pattern was studied and analyzed. Polypharmacy was predominant, including simple polypharmacy in 51.1% and complex polypharmacy in 34.2% of patients. Subjects associated with simple or complex polypharmacy were significantly younger, had higher inpatient settings, a larger portion of onset with manic episode, a shorter duration of untreated illness, a shorter duration of current episode, were more overweight, used less antidepressants and used more anxiolytics. These findings can suggest higher polypharmacy rate in more severe BD and highlight the necessity of monitoring the weight of subjects with polypharmacy.

      • Types of problematic smartphone use based on psychiatric symptoms

        Rho, Mi Jung,Park, Jihwan,Na, Euihyeon,Jeong, Jo-Eun,Kim, Jae Kwon,Kim, Dai-Jin,Choi, In Young Elsevier 2019 Psychiatry Research Vol.275 No.-

<P><B>ABSTRACT</B></P> <P>To provide appropriate solutions for problematic smartphone use, we need to first understand its types. This study aimed to identify types of problematic smartphone use based on psychiatric symptoms, using the decision tree method. We recruited 5,372 smartphone users from online surveys conducted between February 3 and February 22, 2016. Based on scores on the Korean Smartphone Addiction Proneness Scale for Adults (S-Scale), 974 smartphone users were assigned to the smartphone-dependent group and 4398 users were assigned to the normal group. The data-mining technique of C5.0 decision tree was applied. We used 15 input variables, including demographic and psychological factors. Four psychiatric variables emerged as the most important predictors: self-control (Sc; 66%), anxiety (Anx; 25%), depression (Dep; 7%), and dysfunctional impulsivities (Imp; 3%). We identified the following five types of problematic smartphone use: (1) non-comorbid, (2) self-control, (3) Sc + Anx, (4) Sc + Anx + Dep, and (5) Sc + Anx + Dep + Imp. We found that 74% of smartphone-dependent users had psychiatric symptoms. The ratio of participants belonging to the non-comorbid and self-control types was 64%. We proposed that these types of problematic smartphone use may be used for the development of an appropriate service for controlling and preventing such behaviors in adults.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Four psychiatric variables were the most important predictors of problematic smartphone user: self-control, anxiety, depression, and dysfunctional impulsivities. </LI> <LI> There are five problematic smartphone use types: (1) non-comorbid, (2) self-control, (3) Sc + Anx, (4) Sc + Anx + Dep, and (5) Sc + Anx + Dep + Imp. </LI> <LI> 74% of smartphone-dependent users have psychiatric symptoms.
