Intermittent aeration processes have been much of interest as an excellent alternative for nutrients removal for upgrading secondary wastewater treatment plants, with minimum modification. Also, operational flexibility of those proposes a good opportunity for newly planed plants. Here, a pilot study was conducted to evaluate the performance of a continuous flow intermittent aeration process (KSDeN^TM process). The influent was collected at the effluent channel of the grit chamber of a large sewage treatment plant. The influent characteristics with standard deviation were 243.2±170.9mg/L for TCOD_cr, 47.5 13.9mg/L for T-N, 8.4±8.3mg/L for T-P and 5.2±1.8 for C/N ratio. Effluent of 1^st sedimentation tank was 208.2±87.6mg/L for TCOD_cr, 35.0±10.3mg/L for T-N, 4.8±1.9mg/L for T-P and 6.1±2.3 for C/N ratio. The average removal efficiencies of TCOD_cr, T-N and T-P were 93.6, 77.0 and 86.4% and effluent TCOD_cr, T-N and T-P concentrations were 12.5, 9.2 and 0.7mg/L respectively, satisfying regulatory limits. Alkalinity deficiency was not observed during the oxic periods, which is one of the special features of an intermittent aeration process. The results showed higher COD, T-N and T-P removal efficiencies and stability with varying influent conditions, compared to other conventional fixed phase nutrients removal processes.

Increasing demand for automation and recent intact trends have accelerated the employment of robots in manufacturing and service areas. Thus, the need for an easy and efficient robot teaching is also increasing. In this paper, a novel concept of intuitive teaching device is proposed to overcome the weakness of the previous research that enables direct teaching by attaching the teaching device to the end effector of the robot and to improve the intuitiveness and operability. The teaching and collision prediction units are modularized according to their function and can be combined or disassembled. The manipulability is improved by lowering the height of the teaching device, and the influence on the payload is minimized by reducing the weight of the teaching device. A prototype is implemented, and the performance is verified through experiments by attaching the proposed teaching device to an industrial robot and performing teaching and playback tasks.

Purpose: To develop an individualized model for predicting the extent of unintentional weight loss following gastrectomy in patients with gastric cancer based on related risk factors and to externally validate this model using multicenter clinical data in Korea. Materials and Methods: Among gastric cancer patients who underwent curative gastrectomy at 14 different gastric cancer centers, clinical data from patients with more than one weight measurement during the three-year followup period were retrospectively collected. Risk factors associated with weight loss in gastric cancer patients after gastrectomy were analyzed, and a predictive model was developed. Internal and external validation were performed. Results: The data from 2,649 patients were divided into a derivation set (n=1,420 from Seoul National University Hospital) and validation set (n=1,229 from 13 different gastric cancers). Postoperative duration (six vs. 12, 24, or 36 months), sex (female vs. male), age, preoperative body mass index, type of surgery (pylorus-preserving vs. total, distal or proximal gastrectomy), and cancer stage (I vs. II or III) were included in the final prediction model. The model showed approximately 20% accuracy in predicting weight loss at each period: R2 at six, 12, 24 and 36 months after gastrectomy in internal validation=0.20, 0.21, 0.17, and 0.18, respectively, and in external validation=0.20, 0.22, 0.18, and 0.18, respectively. Calibration slopes of internal and external validation were 0.95 and 1.0, respectively. Conclusion: Although predictive accuracy of the model did not reach an acceptable level, repeated external validation measurements showed high reliability. The model may serve as a basic reference in clinical practice.

ZnO film has been used for CIGS solar cells as a buffer layer as itself or by doping Mg and Sn; ZnO film also has been used as a transparent conducting layer by doping Al or B for solar cells. Since ZnO itself is a host material for many applications it is necessary to understand the electrical and optical properties of ZnO film itself with various preparation conditions. We prepared ZnO films by converting ZnS precursor into ZnO film by thermal annealing. ZnO film was formed at low temperature as low as 500°C by annealing a ZnS precursor layer in air. In the air annealing, the electrical resistivity decreased monotonically with increasing annealing temperature; the intensity of the green photoluminescence at 505 nm increased up to 750°C annealing. The electrical resistivity further decreased and the intensity of green emission also increased in reducing atmospheres. The results suggest that deep-level defects originated by oxygen vacancy enhanced green emission, which reduce light transmittance and enhance the recombination of electrons in conduction band and holes in valence. More oxidizing environment is necessary to obtain defect-free ZnO film for higher transparency.

Abstract

Metastasis is responsible for the great majority of deaths in cancer patients. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) have critical functions in cancer metastasis. Especially, MMP-2 and MMP-9 play a major role in tumor-cell migration and invasion. Therefore, to first find out the inhibitory effect of eupatilin on expression of MMPs in SNU182 cells, we used quantitative real-rime PCR to measure MMP-2 and MMP-9 mRNA levels. Eupatilin suppressed transcription of MMP-2 in SNU182 cells more than did the corresponding controls. Also, eupatilin significantly blocked tube formation when treated with a concentration of 3.125 or 6.25 μg/mL on human umbilical vein vascular endothelial cells (HUVECs). Eupatilin induced significant anti-angiogenic potential associated with down-regulation of hypoxia-inducible factor 1-alpha (HIF-1α), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and phosphorylated Akt expression. Thus, tube-formation inhibition and MMP-2-mediated migration are likely to be important therapeutic targets of eupatilin in hepatocellular carcinoma metastasis.

Highlights

Eupatilin inhibits human hepatocellular metastasis.

HIF-1α is important therapeutic targets of eupatilin.

Eupatilin inhibits angiogenesis in HUVECs.

Graphical abstract

[DISPLAY OMISSION]
