미국영어에서 유기 파열음과 / h / 의 분포

Stuart Davis 현대문법학회 2001 현대문법연구 Vol.24 No.-

Stuart Davis. 2001. The Distribution of Aspirated Stops and /h/ in American English. Studies in Modern Grammar 24, 1-23. Languages that have both aspirated stops and the phoneme /h/ frequently manifest a close parallel in their distribution. Previous work in phonology either has failed to recognize this close parallel or does not formally account for it. For example, virtually none of the work on American English phonology observes the similarity of distribution that exists between /h/ and aspirated stops. In this paper we illustrate the close parallelism and then offer an analysis of it within Optimality Theory. The organization of this paper is as follows. In Section I we present the data that show the parallel distribution between /h/ and aspirated stops in American English. In Section 2 we develop an optimality-theoretic analysis accounting for the distribution of aspirated stops and /h/ in American English in a unified way. In Section 3 we discuss two other possible approaches in accounting for the distribution of /h/ and aspirated stops in American English and note their shortcomings. Finally, in Section 4 we briefly consider the distribution of aspiration and /h/ beyond American English and show the range of distribution patterns that are predicted to occur under the optimality-theoretic approach.

WiSeMote: a novel high fidelity wireless sensor network for structural health monitoring

        Davis P. Hoover,Jennifer A. Rice,Argenis Bilbao 국제구조공학회 2012 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.10 No.3

Researchers have made significant progress in recent years towards realizing effective structural health monitoring (SHM) utilizing wireless smart sensor networks (WSSNs). These efforts have focused on improving the performance and robustness of such networks to achieve high quality data acquisition and distributed, in-network processing. One of the primary challenges still facing the use of smart sensors for longterm monitoring deployments is their limited power resources. Periodically accessing the sensor nodes to change batteries is not feasible or economical in many deployment cases. While energy harvesting techniques show promise for prolonging unattended network life, low power design and operation are still critically important. This research presents the WiSeMote: a new, fully integrated ultra-low power wireless smart sensor node and a flexible base station, both designed for long-term SHM deployments. The power consumption of the sensor nodes and base station has been minimized through careful hardware selection and the implementation of power-aware network software, without sacrificing flexibility and functionality.

Photocatalytic hydrogen evolution from biomass conversion

        Davis Kayla Alicia,Yoo Sunghoon,Shuler Eric W.,Sherman Benjamin D.,이승현,Leem Gyu 나노기술연구협의회 2021 Nano Convergence Vol.8 No.6

Biomass has incredible potential as an alternative to fossil fuels for energy production that is sustainable for the future of humanity. Hydrogen evolution from photocatalytic biomass conversion not only produces valuable carbon-free energy in the form of molecular hydrogen but also provides an avenue of production for industrially relevant biomass products. This photocatalytic conversion can be realized with efficient, sustainable reaction materials (biomass) and inexhaustible sunlight as the only energy inputs. Reported herein is a general strategy and mechanism for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution from biomass and biomass-derived substrates (including ethanol, glycerol, formic acid, glucose, and polysaccharides). Recent advancements in the synthesis and fundamental physical/mechanistic studies of novel photocatalysts for hydrogen evolution from biomass conversion are summarized. Also summarized are recent advancements in hydrogen evolution efficiency regarding biomass and biomass-derived substrates. Special emphasis is given to methods that utilize unprocessed biomass as a substrate or synthetic photocatalyst material, as the development of such will incur greater benefits towards a sustainable route for the evolution of hydrogen and production of chemical feedstocks.

Savoring traditions: culinary memory, familial identity, and authenticity of meen curry in Kerala

Davis Ann Rose 한국식품연구원 2024 Journal of Ethnic Foods Vol.11 No.-

Food has been invented, consumed, modifed, and evolved through the ages based on social conditions. This infuence can be seen in Kerala, a South Indian state along the Arabian Sea, which has been part of the colonial expedition. The culinary heritage of Kerala is a unique blend of foreign infuences from Arabs, Chinese, Portuguese, Dutch, and British who arrived on its shores. In this context, the aim of the study is to focus on the authenticity of Kerala’s traditional dish, meen curry, in relation to culinary nostalgia and familial identity. The research paper will provide a comprehensive analysis of meen curry and the ingredients used in Kerala-style restaurant, studio kitchen, toddy shop, and heirloom recipes to understand how the dish is prepared in various settings within and outside the state as an agent of culinary traditions and nostalgia. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with six participants to explore the gastronomic landscape of Bangalore and Kerala with respect to the authenticity of meen curry. The qualitative data from these interviews were analyzed using thematic analysis and categorized into three relevant themes. The fndings of the study suggest that the authenticity of meen curry of Kerala is variable and subjective, and one single form of“authentic” meen curry that represents entire Kerala does not exist. The research will contribute to the current academic knowledge on how the authenticity of food is perceived by communities or individuals and suggests that this perspective may be applicable to other societies or cuisines for future research.

English Loanwords and the Word-Final [t] Problem in Korean

        Davis, Stuart,Kang, Hyunsook 서울대학교 언어교육원 (구 서울대학교 어학연구소) 2006 語學硏究 Vol.42 No.2

English nouns that are borrowed into Korean as ending in [t] are lexicalized as if they ended in /s/. While some researchers have suggested that the lexicalization of word final [t] as /s/ reflects a general weakening process or involves something specific to loanwords, we will argue that the borrowing of English word final [t] as lexical /s/ in Korean is purely a matter internal to the morphophonology of Korean. While our claim is not a new claim since the idea is present in some of the recent literature, the detailed analysis of this within Optimality Theory and its formal connection to cases of paradigm leveling elsewhere in Korean nominal morphology as well as to diachrony is original.

ETS transcription factor Etsrp / Etv2 is required for lymphangiogenesis and directly regulates vegfr3 / flt4 expression

        Davis, Jennifer A.,Koenig, Andrew L.,Lubert, Allison,Chestnut, Brendan,Liu, Fang,Palencia Desai, Sharina,Winkler, Tamara,Pociute, Karolina,Choi, Kyunghee,Sumanas, Saulius Elsevier 2018 Developmental Biology Vol.440 No.1

Abstract

The molecular mechanisms initiating the formation of the lymphatic system, lymphangiogenesis, are still poorly understood. Here we have identified a novel role in lymphangiogenesis for an ETS transcription factor, Etv2/Etsrp, a known regulator of embryonic vascular development. Through the use of fully validated photoactivatable morpholinos we show that inducible Etv2 inhibition in zebrafish embryos at 1 day post-fertilization (dpf) results in significant inhibition of lymphangiogenesis, while development of blood vessels is unaffected. In Etv2-inhibited embryos and larvae, the number of lymphatic progenitors is greatly reduced, the major lymphatic vessel, the thoracic duct, is absent or severely fragmented, and lymphangiogenesis-associated marker expression, including lyve1b, prox1a, and vegfr3/flt4, is strongly downregulated. We also demonstrate that lymphatic progenitors in Etv2 deficient embryos fail to respond to Vegfc signaling. Chromatin immunoprecipitation and sequencing (ChIP-Seq) studies using differentiated mouse embryonic stem (ES) cells as well as luciferase reporter studies in the ES cells and in zebrafish embryos argue that Etv2 directly binds the promoter/enhancer regions of Vegfc receptor Vegfr3/Flt4 and lymphatic marker Lyve1, and promotes their expression. Together these data support a model where Etv2 initiates lymphangiogenesis by directly promoting the expression of flt4 within the posterior cardinal vein.

Highlights

Etv2 expression is enriched in the vein during zebrafish lymphangiogenesis.

Inducible Etv2 knockdown inhibits lymphangiogenesis.

Blood vessels are not affected by Etv2 knockdown at 24 hpf.

Vegfc fails to induce lymphangiogenesis in Etv2 knockdown embryos.

Etv2 directly binds to Flt4 promoter and promotes its expression.

      • Cucurbit Grafting

        Davis, Angela R.,Perkins-Veazie, Penelope,Sakata, Yoshiteru,Lopez-Galarza, Salvador,Maroto, Jose Vicente,Lee, Sang-Gyu,Huh, Yun-Chan,Sun, Zhanyong,Miguel, Alfredo,King, Stephen R.,Cohen, Roni,Lee, Jun Taylor Francis 2008 Critical reviews in plant sciences Vol.27 No.1

Due to limited availability of arable land and high market demand for off-season vegetables, cucurbits (plants in the family Cucurbitaceae) are continuously cultivated under unfavorable conditions in some countries. These conditions include environments that are too cold, wet, or dry, or are cool low-light winter greenhouses. Successive cropping can increase salinity, the incidence of cucurbit pests, and soilborne diseases like fusarium wilt caused by Fusarium spp. These conditions cause various physiological and pathological disorders leading to severe crop loss. Chemical pest control is expensive, not always effective, and can harm the environment. Grafting can overcome many of these problems. In fact, in many parts of the world, grafting is a routine technique in continuous cropping systems. It was first commonly used in Japan during the late 1920s by grafting watermelon [Citrullus lanatus (Thunb.) Matsum. and Nakai] onto pumpkin [Cucurbita moschata Duchesne ex. Poir] rootstocks. Soon after, watermelons were grafted onto bottle gourd [Lagenaria siceraria (Molina) Standl.] rootstocks. This practice helped control declining yield due to soilborne diseases. China produces more than half the world's watermelons and cucumbers (Cucumis sativus L.), and approximately 20% of these are grafted. Use of rootstocks can enhance plant vigor through vigorous attainment of soil nutrients, avoidance of soil pathogens and tolerance of low soil temperatures, salinity, and wet-soil conditions. The type of rootstock affects cucurbit plant growth, yield, and fruit quality. Cucurbit grafting is rare in the United States, but with continued loss of quality disease-free farmland along with the phase-out of methyl bromide, the U.S. cucurbit industry sees grafting as an attractive option. Some seed companies now offer watermelon transplants grafted onto squash or bottle gourd rootstocks, and some transplant facilities offer grafting services. There have been thorough analyses of cucurbit grafting in other countries, but the literature in English is limited. This review summarizes the state of the cucurbit grafting industry on a global level, translating work published in many languages.
