        Effects of Mold Growth on Building Materials by Different Environments in Taiwan

        The main of study is to investigate the effect of moisture variation and micro-structure on the growth mold at surface of buildingmaterials. The two different water-cement ratio of mortars (w/c = 0.4, 0.6), brick and tiles were used in this study. The mercuryIntrusion Porosity-Meter (MIP) was used to determine the pore distribution of building materials. The moisture variation of materialswas recorded in constant climate chamber (25oC, relative humidity 80%), general indoor environment (28oC, relative humidity 55%)and water damage simulation environment. The results indicated that the pore size and distribution will affect the surface water ratioand moisture content of materials. The surface water ratio of specimen was affected by different environment seriously. The surfacewater ratio was an important factor in mold growth.

      • COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION IN AND BENEFITS OF TOURISM DEVELOPMENT IN THE TURPAN VALLEY, XINJIANG AUTONOMOUS REGION OF CHINA

        While western scholars such as Jamal and Gertz (1995), Tosun (2005), Fallon and Kriwoken (2003), usually presume that community participation is critical to sustainable tourism development, Chinese scholar Wenjun Li (2006) boldly states that it is possible for a community to achieve benefits of tourism development despite weak involvement in the planning and management of a tourist destination. Our survey of government officials, tourist business operators and residents in seven locations in the World Heritage-listed Turpan Valley in the Xinjiang province found that top-down, government-led participation is necessary and desirable, and does not detract from stakeholders' perception that they are sharing in the benefits of tourism development in the region.

        Factors Affecting the Incidence of Angel Wing in White Roman Geese: Stocking Density and Genetic Selection

        The present study investigated stocking density and genetic lines, factors that may alter the severity and incidence of angel wing (AW), in White Roman geese. Geese (n = 384) from two genetically selected lines (normal- winged line, NL, and angel-winged line, AL, respectively) and one commercial line (CL) were raised in four pens. Following common commercial practice, low-stocking-density (LD), medium-stocking-density, and high-stocking-density treatments were respectively administered to 24, 32, and 40 geese per pen at 0 to 3 weeks ($1.92m^2/pen$) and 4 to 6 weeks ($13.2m^2/pen$) of age and to 24, 30, and 36 geese at 7 to 14 weeks ($20.0m^2/pen$) of age. The results revealed that stocking density mainly affected body weight gain in geese younger than 4 weeks, and that geese subjected to LD had a high body weight at 2 weeks of age. However, the effect of stocking density on the severity score of AW (SSAW) and incidence of AW (IAW) did not differ significantly among the treatments. Differences were observed among the genetic stocks; that is, SSAW and IAW were significantly higher in AL than in NL and CL. Genetic selection generally aggravates AW, complicating its elimination. To effectively reduce IAW, stocking density, a suspected causal factor, should be lower than that presently applied commercially.

      • Service Design of Community Fruit and Vegetable Smart Vending Machine Based on User Touchpoint

        In this paper, the concept of touchpoint in service design is used to optimize the service progress of the fruit and veg table smart vending machine. According to the behavior of users, the whole use process is divided into four stages: arrival, selection, payment and departure. Through the way of user interview and observation, the touchpoints in the use process are summarized into three types: physical touchpoints, digital touchpoints and interpersonal touchpoints. Then analyze the pain points of user touchpoint. According to the pain points and design objectives, sort out the solution of service design. It is expected to optimize the whole process service according to the analysis results, so as to realize better interaction between people, goods and machines.

        Effective Antiviral Activity of the Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitor Sunitinib Malate against Zika Virus

        Introduction: Zika virus (ZIKV), a mosquito-borne flavivirus, causes the outbreaks of Latin America in 2015 - 2016, with the incidence of neurological complications. Sunitinib malate, an orally bioavailable malate salt of the tyrosine kinase inhibitor, is suggested as a broadspectrum antiviral agent against emerging viruses like severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV) and SARS-CoV-2. Materials and Methods: This study investigated the antiviral efficacy and antiviral mechanisms of sunitinib malate against ZIKV infection using cytopathic effect reduction, virus yield, and time-of-addition assays. Results: Sunitinib malate concentration-dependently reduced ZIKV-induced cytopathic effect, the expression of viral proteins, and ZIKV yield in supernatant with 50% inhibitory concentration (IC50) value of 0.015 μM, and the selectivity index of greater than 100 against ZIKV infection, respectively. Sunitinib malate had multiple antiviral actions during entry and post-entry stages of ZIKV replication. Sunitinib malate treatment at entry stage significantly reduced the levels of ZIKV RNA replication with the reduction of (+) RNA to (-) RNA ratio and the production of new intracellular infectious particles in infected cells. The treatment at post-entry stage caused a concentration-dependent increase in the levels of ZIKV (+) RNA and (-) RNA in infected cells, along with enlarging the ratio of (+) RNA to (-) RNA, but caused a pointed increase in the titer of intracellular infectious particles by 0.01 and 0.1 μM, and a substantial decrease in the titer of intracellular infectious particles by 1 μM. Conclusion: The study discovered the antiviral actions of sunitinib malate against ZIKV infection, demonstrating a repurposed, host-targeted approach to identify potential antiviral drugs for treating emerging and global viral diseases.

        Cross-Strait Detente and Implications for U.S. Arms Sales to Taiwan

        Cross-Strait detente in the wake of China`s rise presents the United States a greater challenge in selling new, advanced weaponry to Taiwan, owing to the political unpredictability of cross-Strait relations and the insurmountable task of maintaining a military balance across the Taiwan Strait. In contrast to the Bush administration, the Obama administration is more concerned about China`s retaliation against U.S. defense corporations involved in arms sales to Taiwan and the maintenance of Sino-American strategic stability. The United States is faced with warming cross-Strait relations and Taiwan`s unknown political destiny with China, complicating faithful implementation of the Taiwan Relations Act (TRA) by the United States. The rise of China has further constrained U.S. policymakers in their deliberation of arms sales to Taiwan. With the signature of 19 cross-Strait functional agreements and all kinds of interflows, Beijing has some evidence-backed arguments that the United States should cease arms sales to Taiwan in accordance with the August17, 1982 Communique. A policy of actively implementing the TRA and providing Taiwan with the most advanced weapons is becoming harder to implement, but the TRA is not moribund unless Beijing renounces the use of force against Taiwan, or Taipei enters a process of political negotiation leading to final settlement of its status with China.

        Comparing U. S. and Taiwanese Pre-service Teachers` Solving Triangular Arithmagons

        The study investigated pre-service teachers’ knowledge and computational skills by using Triangular Arithmagon. Participants included 90 pre-service teachers from two schools in the United States and Taiwan. The Triangular Arithmagons Test (TAT) was used to measure pre-service teachers’ performance in whole number, fractions, and decimals operations (i.e., addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division), each of which included level-1 (basic) and level-2 (advanced) tests. MANOVA analysis was performed to compare the performance between teachers from the United States and Taiwan. Results indicated that overall, pre-service teachers in Taiwan outperformed those in the United States, especially on the advanced-level tests. Pre-service teachers in the United States were found to have poor ability of solving complex operation problems. Different curriculum plans and teaching methods may lead to the performance gap between the two countries.
