A Reinterpretation of God’s Omnipotence in the Context of the Process Philosophy and the Yoruba Concept of Evil

        Babalola, S. F,P. Alokan,E. O. Uduma 한국외국어대학교(글로벌캠퍼스) 아프리카연구소 2011 Asian Journal of African Studies Vol.30 No.-

God’s omnipotence or power is a phenomenon that is subject to controversial discussions down the centuries. The theists are of the opinion that God holds all power absolutely, but this assertion has been variously challenged, especially, in the context of the existence of evil in the world. Going by the experience of the Yoruba of south-west Nigeria, and also by the position of the process philosophers across the globe, the assertion of the theists that God holds absolute power is incoherent. This paper is in agreement with the process thought and the Yoruba of south-west Nigeria that a reinterpretation of God’s omnipotence is absolutely important. A correct understanding of God’s power will help in reshaping our thinking about the politics of our land, Nigeria. A central objective of this paper is therefore, to influence the power sharing formulae and to establish the crucial role of ‘check and balance’ in the governance of Nigeria. This will go a long way to salvage the country from corrupt rulers.

      • A Case Study of Small-Scale Farmer`S Participation in Nigeria Agricultural Development Programmes: Oyo and Osun State Agricultural Development Programmes

( Abel Babalola Ogunwale ) 한국농촌경제연구원 2005 Journal of Rural Development Vol.28 No.1

The study examined the socio-economic characteristics of small-scale farmers that were participating in Oyo and Osun States` Agricultural Development programmes. Reasons for participation and activities in which they had participated were investigated. Data were collected from 120 randomly selected registered farmers in the two programmes. Frequency counts, percentages and chi-square analysis were used in data analysis. Majority of the sampled farmers were illiterates, but had many years of farming experience. Procurement of fertilizers at cheaper rate, easy accessibility to farm information, new crop varieties, new methods of farming, tractors and implements hiring were some of the reasons for participation. Farmers participated in the following programme activities, agricultural meetings, demonstrations, fortnightly training meetings, purchasing farm inputs and listening to radio agricultural programmes. Age of farmers had a positive and significant relationship with total number of activities in which farmers had participated.

Foreign Aid and Economic Growth in West Africa: Examining the Roles of Institutions

Sikiru Babalola,Tsunehiro Otsuki 한국국제경제학회 2020 International Economic Journal Vol.34 No.3

This study examines the roles of institutions on the relationship between foreign aid and economic growth in the 16 West African countries. Relying on panel data obtained from the World Bank’s world development and governance indicators, from 1996 to 2017, the study employs the autoregressive distributed lag technique in investigating the relationship. The empirical findings depict that foreign aid exerts a neutral effect on economic growth; the effect turns negative when the institutional variable is incorporated into the analysis. Again, the interaction effect of foreign aid and institution on economic growth is such that it reduces the negative effect of foreign aid on economic growth. The other factors of growth included are trade openness and government size, whose effects are positive and largely negative on the growth of the West African region, respectively. A significant policy implication from these findings is that the efforts of governments of the region should be directed towards building formidable economic, social and political institutions. This would not only reduce the negative impact of aid on growth but would also promote the competitiveness of the countries for private domestic and foreign capital; thus, reducing reliance on foreign aid.

Morphological Features of Nigerian Pidgin in the Football Commentary

Adesoji Babalola 세종대학교 언어연구소 2021 Journal of Universal Language Vol.22 No.1

The aim of this paper is to analyze and describe the various morphological features that embody commentary in Nigerian Pidgin (NP). The data for this study were drawn from 2018 FIFA World Cup that was hosted in Russia. Pidgin commentary was run and aired on a channel on Digital Satellite Television (DSTV). The pidgin commentaries of the two Semi-Finals between France and Belgium as well as Croatia and England and the Final between Croatia and France were tape-recorded for analysis. The theoretical orientation relies largely on the Item and Process theory (IP) of descriptive morphological analysis popularized. Findings show that reduplication, compounding and affixation are widely used while blending, clipping and conversion are averagely used in the Pidgin commentary data. It is further revealed that acronymy and abbreviations are uncommon morphological features of NP commentary. The study concludes that the characterization of NP commentary with productive morphological features indicates that the language has the stamina to express all facets of our daily life. It is therefore crucial for the government to support the language with official recognition so that it will continue to contribute significantly to national cohesion in Nigeria.

Religious Language: Ludwig Wittgenstein and the South-Western Nigerians on the Use Theory

Sunday Funmilola Babalola 한국외국어대학교 아프리카연구소 2020 Asian Journal of African Studies Vol.- No.47

This paper elucidated on the concept of religious language in the perspective of Ludwig Wittgenstein and the Yoruba of South-western Nigeria. The use theory as propounded by Wittgenstein, in his later work, was discussed in line with the thinking of the Yoruba of South-western Nigeria. The objective of the paper is to explore the relevance of religious language in the circle of adherents of religion and also for intellectual purpose. The method of investigation was philosophical and in this context, the study employed a thematic discourse of the subject matter. Being basically a library based study, scholarly materials were explored. In this perspective, the paper discussed basic African religious language themes that were exemplified by Yoruba in comparison with the world-view of Wittgenstein on religious language. The paper has the finding that religious languages are not meaningless. Their meanings are contained in their use. Religious language is very relevant in African religious world-view.

Warfare in African Pentecostalism and the Indigenous African Religion

Sunday Funmilola Babalola 한국외국어대학교 아프리카연구소 2016 Asian Journal of African Studies Vol.- No.40

This study is essentially phenomenological and comparative in structure. It seeks to offer a scholarly contribution to the current discussion on African scholarship that the indigenous religion of Africans and Pentecostalism as it is being practiced today, particularly in Nigeria, could have a lot in common. This is attested to by the fact that Yoruba cosmology, which admits of the presence and virulence of spirit realities and metaphysical forces, is a common legacy to the Yoruba members of the traditional religion and Yoruba Pentecostalism. The study, therefore, raises and discusses issues such as the reality and effects of witchcraft in a contemporary Nigerian society. The paper also discusses how the menace of witchcraft is being addressed by the practitioners and adherents of African indigenous religion and Pentecostal Christianity in Nigeria. The study, however, centres on the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC), the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) and the Mountain of Fire and Miracle Ministries (MFM) as some of the major Pentecostal movements in Nigeria. The study is conducted through the use of interviews (20 respondents) and questionnaires (120 respondents). Archival materials and relevant text books were also consulted. The data were duly collated and analysed using simple descriptive method.

Re-transmissibility of mouse-adapted ME7 scrapie strain to ovine PrP transgenic mice

Joshua Adekunle Babalola,김종무,이윤정,박정호,최홍석,최영곤,최은경,김용선 대한수의학회 2019 Journal of Veterinary Science Vol.20 No.2

Scrapie is a mammalian transmissible spongiform encephalopathy or prion disease that predominantly affects sheep and goats. Scrapie has been shown to overcome the species barrier via experimental infection of other rodents. To confirm the re-transmissibility of the mouse-adapted ME7 scrapie strain to ovine prion protein (PrP) transgenic mice, mice of an ovinized transgenic mouse line carrying the Suffolk sheep PrP gene that contained the A136 R154 Q171/ARQ allele were intracerebrally inoculated with brain homogenates obtained from terminally ill ME7-infected C57BL/6J mice. Herein, we report that the mouse-adapted ME7 scrapie strain was successfully re-transmitted to the transgenic mice expressing ovine PrP. In addition, we observed changes in the incubation period, glycoform profile, and pattern of scrapie PrP (PrPSc) deposition in the affected brains. PrPSc deposition in the hippocampal region of the brain of 2nd-passaged ovine PrP transgenic mice was accompanied by plaqueformation. These results reveal that the mouse-adapted ME7 scrapie strain has the capacity to act as a template for the conversion of ovine normal monomeric precursors into a pathogenic form in ovine PrP transgenic mice. The change in glycoform pattern and the deposition of plaques in the hippocampal region of the brain of the 2nd-passaged PrP transgenic mice are most likely cellular PrP species dependent rather than being ME7 scrapie strain encoded

Protective effect of methanol leaf extract of Cnidoscolus aconitifolius against lipopolysaccharides-induced cortico-hippocampal neuroinflammation, oxidative stress and memory impairment

Kabirat Temitope Babalola,Oyetola Oyebanjo,Victor Adetayo Adekoya,Ismaheel Akinwale Adeniyi,Abayomi Mayowa Ajayi,Samuel Adetunji Onasanwo 경희대학교 융합한의과학연구소 2023 Oriental Pharmacy and Experimental Medicine Vol.23 No.1

Cnidoscolus aconitifolius contains various phenolic compounds possessing anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. This study aimed to evaluate the protective effect of the Methanol Extract of Cnidoscolus aconitifolius (MECA) against LPS-induced memory impairment, oxidative stress and neuroinflammation in rats. Thirty male Wistar rats were divided into 5 groups (n = 6). Group 1 served as the control and received the vehicle, group 2 was negative control, groups 3–5 received MECA (25, 50, and 100 mg/kg) for 14 days. Groups 2–5 were daily injected with LPS (250 μg/kg, i.p) from day 8–14 of treatment. Memory impairment was evaluated after the last LPS administration using the Y-Maze Test (YMT) and Novel Object Recognition Test (NORT). Brain prefrontal cortex (PFC) and hippocampus (HPC) sections were obtained and levels of reduced glutathione (GSH), malondialdehyde, catalase, nitrite, acetylcholinesterase, and TNF-α and IL-6 were determined. Oral administration of MECA significantly reversed LPS-induced memory impairment in the YMT and NORT. MECA significantly reduced LPS-induced elevated malondialdehyde and nitrite, while preventing depletion of GSH and catalase in the PFC and HPC sections of the brain. Acetylcholinesterase activity is also reduced. MECA (100 mg/kg) significantly reduced IL-6 and TNF-α levels in PFC and HPC of LPS-treated rats. This study showed that the methanol extract of Cnidoscolus aconitifolius has significant protective effect against lipopolysaccharide-induced memory impairment via mechanisms related to inhibition of neuroinflammation and oxidative stress.

      • A Contextualization of American Pragmatism in the Evolution of Christ Apostolic Church, Nigeria

Sunday Funmilola BABALOLA,ALOKAN 한국외국어대학교(글로벌캠퍼스) 아프리카연구소 2016 Asian Journal of African Studies Vol.39 No.-

Pragmatism, a contemporary philosophical issue, has its origin in America, but it is not limited to America. Its development as a philosophical system of thought is traceable, among others, to Alfred North Whitehead and John Dewey. The fact that the relevance of Pragmatism cuts across cultures and nations is a major point that this paper wants to establish. This paper, therefore, seeks to discuss the origin, development, and doctrines of Christ Apostolic Church in Nigeria in the perspectives of Alfred North Whitehead and the American pragmatists, thereby, establishing that pragmatism, in its interpretation, is also relevant to issues of religious interest in Africa. American pragmatism is particularly of a great value when it comes to discussing doctrinal issues within the Church, especially the Pentecostal ones. Furthermore, the paper is a medium to advocate that pragmatism is a philosophical idea, the practice of which should be embraced, not only in America, but also in Africa. The study relies greatly on archival materials and primary sources.
