The photo-performance and color uniformity of the light-emitting diodes (LEDs) were enhanced bycontrolling the surface properties of the titanium dioxide (TiO2) particles as light scatting materials using asol-gel-based surfacemodificationmethod.Silane couplingagentsofdifferentcarbonchainlengths(C3–C16)were introduced onto the TiO2 surface for investigating the light scattering effect depending on the TiO2dispersibility in the encapsulant. The dispersibility of the modified TiO2 particles was greater than that of theas-prepared TiO2 particles (1.6–2.5 times). The dispersibility of TiO2 improved with the increasing carbonchain length of silane (C3–C6). However, the dispersibility did not increase but reduced when the carbonchain length was considerably long (C16) because the TiO2 surface was more hydrophobic than theencapsulant. After the fabrication of the LED devices, the TiO2-loaded LED device showed high photometricflux and low correlated color temperature despite using the same concentration of phosphor (3.0 wt.% withrespect to the added silicone resin). Furthermore, the photo-performance and color uniformity improvedwhen the TiO2 dispersibility was increased. This can be attributed to the enhancement of light scattering inthe LED package when the interfacial affinity of the TiO2/encapsulant was improved.

We report on the optimization of fabrication of a ceramic phosphor plate (CPP) using α-Al2O3 as functional materials for an automotive laser headlamp. The prepared CPP shows the high luminous characteristics with increasing α-Al2O3 contents because of the light scattering of the hexagonal structure of α-Al2O3 materials. We investigated the correlation between α-Al2O3 and thickness of CPP. The luminous properties of the CPP are improved and optimized according to the variables of one. We found that the prepared sample is a potential material for future solid-state laser lighting in application as an automotive headlamp.
백색 LED 패키지용 형광체 광학 시뮬레이션 정확도에 관한 연구

There has been a critical issue in optical simulation of phosphors in LEDs due to their light-reabsorption properties. To improve the accuracy of optical modeling for a white LED package, we utilized the spectrum data of the phosphor-dispersed encapsulant film instead of the phosphor powder. By measuring white LED packages with green and red phosphors, the maximum difference between simulation and experimental results of a color temperature, a color rendition index number and a color coordinate corresponds to ΔT=95K, ΔRa=1.7 and Δxy=0.007, respectively. Based on those results, the proposed method can well explain the change of emission spectra of white LEDs with more than two phosphors which introduce the complex optical phenomena such as absorption, reabsorption, light emission, reflection and scattering, etc.
