        품종별 무화과의 영양성분 비교

        국내에서 주로 재배되는 무화과 품종인 도후인(Dauphine)2종, 봉래시(Horaish)2종, 바나네(Banane) 1종을 대상으로 이화학적 특성을 분석한 결과, 무화과의 수분은 85.37~87.28%, 회분 0.38~0.43%, 조지방 0.20~0.26%, 조단백질 0.39~0.81%로 품종별 차이는 보이지 않았으며 조섬유는 바나네가 7.55±0.13%로 다른 품종 5.12~7.60%에 비해 다소 높은 결과를 보였다. 무기성분 함량은 모든 품종에서 K>Ca>Mg>Na순으로 나타났으며 전체 함량의 경우 도후인 품종이 타 품종에 비해 조금 높은 결과를 보였다. 바나네 품종과 봉래시 품종의 총 유리아미노산 조성은 glutamic acid>proline>aspartic acid 순으로 높은 분포를 보였으며, 전체 함량의 51.68~58.71%를 차지하고 있으며, 도후인 품종의 경우 glutamic acid>aspartic acid>alanine이 전체의 약 50%를 차지하고 있었다. 또한 기억력 감퇴 예방 등 학습 능력에 도움을 주는 기능성 물질인 γ-aminobutyric acid(GABA) 함량은 바나네에서 26.69mg/100g으로 상당히 높은 함량을 보였다. 총 폴리페놀 함량은 도후인이 198.91~261.64mg/kg, 봉래시 품종이 169.90~174.33mg/kg, 바나네 품종이 211.07mg/kg으로 나타났으며 총 플라보노이드 함량은 바나네(84.95mg/kg), 도후인(60.47~68.71mg/kg), 봉래시(44.12~44.60mg/kg)순으로 바나네가 가장 높았으며 품종간의 차이를 보였따. 플라보노이드성분 중 quercetin과 kaempferol은 각각 2.40~3.54mg/kg, 1.09~1.16mg/kg으로 분석되었다. In this study, the proximate compositions, minerals, free amino acids, total polyphenol and flavonoids of figs were analyzed according to their cultivars. The proximate compositions showed moisture at 85.37~87.28%, crude ash at 0.38~0.43%, crude lipid at 0.20~0.26%, crude protein at 0.39~0.81%, carbohydrate at 11.23~13.66% and crude fiber at 5.12~7.55% (dry base). The amounts of the following minerals in the figs were highest, in this order: K > Ca > Mg > Na. The total polyphenol contents were highest in this order: Dauphine (198.91~261.64mg/kg), Banane (211.07 mg/kg) and Horaish (169.90~174.33 mg/kg). The total flavonoid contents were highest in this order. Banane (84.52 mg/kg) > Dauphine (60.47~68.71 mg/kg) > Horaish (44.12~44.60mg/kg). The quercetin contents were highest in this order. Dauphine, 2.40~3.54 mg/kg; Banane, 3.54 mg/kg; and Horaish, 2.40~2.75 mg/kg; but the flavonoid contents were lowest in this order. Dauphine, 1.11~1.16 mg/kg; Banane, 1.14 mg/kg; and Horaish, 1.09~1.11 mg/kg. The free amino acid content of the figs was 199.70~328.77 mg/100g; their essential free amino acid contents, 46.45~67.46 mg/100 g; and their GABA (γ-aminobutyric acid) contents, 13.57~26.69 mg/100 g.

        Synthesis and characterization of β-carotene-loaded albumin nanoparticles by high-speed homogenizer

        β-Carotene (BC) is a strong antioxidant, but its therapeutic application has been limited by its poor aqueous solubility. Protein-based nanoparticles (NPs) have been used to increase the aqueous solubility of hydrophobic drugs. In this study, bovine serum albumin (BSA) was used to prepare NPs to encapsulate BC using a high-speed homogenizer. After homogenization, BC-BSA-NPs were formed and the encapsulated BC was dissolved in phosphate-buffered saline at pH 7.4. Various characterization methods, including dynamic light scattering, transmission electron microscopy, and spectrophotometry, indicated that BCBSA- NPs were spherical with an average size of 112 nm and encapsulated BC with high efficiency. BC encapsulated in NPs was stable during the preparation process and was continuously released in PBS at 37 C for 3 days. The 2,2- diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl and ferric reducing antioxidant power assays demonstrated good antioxidant activity of BC-BSA-NPs. These results suggest that BSA-NPs are a promising nanocarrier for the delivery of BC.

      • Probing Enzymatic Activity inside Living Cells Using a Nanowire–Cell “Sandwich” Assay

        <P>Developing a detailed understanding of enzyme function in the context of an intracellular signal transduction pathway requires minimally invasive methods for probing enzyme activity <I>in situ</I>. Here, we describe a new method for monitoring enzyme activity in living cells by sandwiching live cells between two vertical silicon nanowire (NW) arrays. Specifically, we use the first NW array to immobilize the cells and then present enzymatic substrates intracellularly via the second NW array by utilizing the NWs’ ability to penetrate cellular membranes without affecting cells’ viability or function. This strategy, when coupled with fluorescence microscopy and mass spectrometry, enables intracellular examination of protease, phosphatase, and protein kinase activities, demonstrating the assay’s potential in uncovering the physiological roles of various enzymes.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/nalefd/2013/nalefd.2013.13.issue-1/nl3037068/production/images/medium/nl-2012-037068_0006.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/nl3037068'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>

        Original articles : Anti-inflammatory effects of equine adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells for bone fracture in thoroughbred racehorses

        Bone fractures are most often seen in racetrack horses because of the high level of intensity in racing. These issues are the main cause of decreased performance in racehorses. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have been explored to improve intra-articular therapy in racehorses. MSCs are essential for the repair and regeneration of damaged tissues. In this study, the effect of intra-articular injection of MSCs in racehorses was investigated. Before accessing the MSC therapy, synovial fluids were obtained from the fracture site of racehorses, and adipose tissue was collected for MSC isolation. Using the MSC specific marker, adipose tissue-derived MSCs were identified. The racehorses received intra-articular injection of autologous MSCs (or allogeneic) (3 × 107 cells/3 mL). After 1 or 2 weeks, synovial fluids were collected from racehorses. To test the effect of MSC injection using ELISA, we analyzed inflammatory factors from the untreated samples compared to MSC-treated samples of racehorses. The level of pro-inflammatory factors (interleukin-1β and prostaglandin E2) was significantly decreased in synovial fluids of MSC-injected racehorses, compared to before accessing the MSC therapy, whereas, the level of anti-inflammatory factor (interleukin-10) was higher than prior to accessing the MSC therapy. Further studies are needed to investigate the anti-inflammatory mechanism of MSC in racehorses.

        조기 진통 임부의 질내 과산화수소생성 유산균

        목적 : 정상 임부와 양막파열이 없는 조기분만진통 임부의 질내 과산화수소생성 유산균 양태를 비교하여 조기분만진통과의 상호연관성을 알아보고자 하였다. 연구 방법 : 2001년 7월부터 2002년 2월까지 전남대학교 병원에 내원한 임신 37주 미만의 정상 임부 66명과 양막파열을 동반하지 않은 조기분만진통 임부 30명을 대상으로 하였다. 질내 분비물을 채취 후 질 분비물도말 건사, pH 및 그람염색 Nugent 점수를 측정하였다. 채취한 질내 분비물을 1시간 이내에 Rogosa 한천배지에 접종하여 Lactobacillus를 정상임부 66명에서 187개 군락, 조기진통임부 30명에서 77개 군락을 분리하였고 0.25 mg/mL 3,3`,5,5`-tetramethyl-benzidine와 0.01 mg/mL paclitaxel가 첨가된 MRS 한천배지에 상기에서 분리한 균주를 3μl씩 접종하여 37℃에서 혐기 배양한 후 꺼내어 호기상태에서 30분, 1시간 후에 집락의 과산화수소 생성을 검사하였다. 결과 : 1. 질내 분비물 pH치는 정상 임부 4.06±0.31, 양막파열이 없는 조기분만진통 임부 4.04±0.57로 서로간의 유의한 차가 없었다. 2. 질 분비물 도말 검사상 백혈구 수는 양막파열이 없는 조기분만진통 임부에서 4.46±0.47으로 정상 임부 2.39±0.37보다 유의하게 많았다 (p<0.01). 3. 질 분비물 그람염색 Nugent 점수는 양막파열이 없는 조기분만진통 임부에서 2.34±0.51로 정상 임부 1.21±0.30보다 유의하게 높았다 (p<0.05). 4. 양막파열이 없는 조기분만진통 임부에서 과산화수소생성 유산균은 30분 후 strongly positive 2.6%, weakly positive 2.6%, negative 83.1%로 정상 임부에서 각각 17.1%, 31.6%, 41.7% 보다 유의하게 감소하였다 (p<0.01). 1시간 후에는 양막파열이 없는 조기분만진통 임부에서는 strongly positive 6.5%, weakly positive 7.8%, negative 59.7%로 정상 임부에서 각각 36.9%, 31.6%, 19.8% 보다 유의하게 감소하였다 (p<0.01). 결론 : 질내 숙주방어작용을 하는 과산화수소생성 유산균들의 분포양상이 조기분만진통의 발생에 중요한 역할을 할 것으로 사료된다. Objective : To investigate the possible role of vaginal infection in preterm delivery, we studied characteristics of vaginal discharge related to hydrogen peroxide producing Lactobacillus. Methods : Vaginal specimens were obtained from 66 women with normal pregnancy and 30 women with preterm labor and intact membranes. Vaginal pH, leukocyte counts on wet smear, and scores by Nugent criteria on Gram stain were measured. Lactobacillus were tested for production of hydrogen peroxide using a qualitative assay on a tetramethylbenzidine agar plate after incubated for 30 minutes and 1 hour. One hydrogen eighty-seven hydrogen peroxide-producing Lactobacillus colonies isolated from vaginal fluid of normal pregnant women, and 77 hydrogen peroxide-producing Lactobacillus colonies isolated from it of women with preterm labor and intact membrane. Results : 1. There were no significant differences in vaginal pH between normal pregnant women and women with preterm labor and intact membranes (4.06±0.31 vs. 4.04±0.57, p<NS). 2. Leukocyte levels in vaginal wet smear of women with preterm labor and intact membranes were significantly higher than that of normal pregnant women (4.46±0.47 vs. 2.39±0.37, p<0.01). 3. Nugent score of Gram stained vaginal smear of women with preterm labor and intact membranes were significantly higher than that of normal pregnant women (2.34±0.51 vs. 1.21±0.30, p<0.05). 4. Hydrogen peroxide-producing Lactobacillus levels in vaginal flora of women with preterm labor and intact membranes were significantly lower than that of normal pregnant women incuvated after 30 minutes (strongly positive 2.6%, weakly positive 2.6%, negative 83.1% vs 17.1%, 31.6%, 41.7%, p<0.01) and 1 hour (strongly positive 6.5%, weakly positive 7.8%, negative 59.7% vs 36.9%, 19.8%, p<0.01). Conclusion : Distribution of vaginal hydrogen peroxide-producing Lactobacillus in vaginal flora as defense factors for vaginal infection may have a important role in the pathophysiology of preterm labor.

        Angiodysplasia, an important vascular lesion of the gut, defined by the presence of ectasia of normal preexisting intestinal submucosal veins and overlying mucosal capillaries, is a source of major morbidity from bleeding. With the development of diagnostic angiography, angiodysplasia of the bowel has been recognized as a frequent cause of significant intestinal bleeding, particularly in elderly patients. Its cause is unknown but considered mostly to be acquired as a result of a degenerative process associated with aging. We experienced one case of jejunal angiodysplasia in a 64-year old man, diagnosed by angiography, and selective jejunal resection was conducted with the aid of intraoperative mesenteric arterial methylene blue injection, administered via a catheter superselectively positioned in the appropriate jejunal arterial branch prior to operation. This patient has been followed up for 6 months without rebleeding. (Korean J Gastroenterol 1995;27:588- 594)

        생사학 연구동향과 학문성 모색

        이 논문은 생사학의 연구현황을 살펴봄으로써 학문적 영역으로서 ‘생사학(生死學)’의 가능성을 모색하는 글이다. 누구나 죽는다는 사실이 죽음학의 출발점이며 죽음의 두려움을 극복하자는 것이 죽음학의 목표이다. 죽음에 대한 불안은 현존하는 인간으로 하여금 일상적 삶을 성찰하는 계기를 제공하며 이 과정에서 삶과 죽음을 상징하는 현재와 미래, 유와 무, 형이상과 형이하를 관통하는 생사관이 생기며 이를 통해 죽음에 대한 불안을 부단히 극복하려고 한다. 따라서 죽음은 삶의 일부이며, 죽음에 대한 불안의 극복은 일상적 삶의 과제이기에 죽음문제는 삶의 문제이다. 이런 측면에서 서양의 죽음학은 동양에서 삶과 죽음이 다르지 않다는 관점에서 생사학으로 재정의 되고 그 영역을 확대해 가고 있다. 생사학이 융합학문으로 성장하기 위해서는 생사학의 개념, 이론, 연구영역, 학문적 성격을 정리해야 한다. 학제 간 융합학문으로 출발한 생사학은 인문학적 접근만 있어서도 안 되고 과학적 접근만으로도 안 된다. 생사학은 삶과 죽음의 문제를 의학과 종교, 철학, 교육학, 심리학, 사회학, 사회복지 등 다양한 범주에서 밀접하게 관련을 맺고 전개하는 융합학문이기 때문이다. 이에 융합학문으로서의 생사학, 특히 한국적 생사학의 지평을 넓히기 위해 지금까지 관련된 연구업적을 분석하고 향후 학문영역으로 발전하기 위한 개념과 이론 정립을 위한 연구노력이 시급히 요청된다. 이 같은 시각에서 먼저 국내 생사학 관련 논문 현황을 살펴보고, 이에 대한 분석을 통해 학제 간 융합학문으로써의 생사학 발전 가능성과 탐구영역 개발, 확장에 대한 논의를 통해 ‘한국적 생사학’의 학문성을 넓히는 데 의미 있는 계기가 되고자 한다. The purpose of this study is to appraise the possibilities of Life and Death Studies as a field of academic disciplines and analyzing the domestic research trend of Life and Death Studies. Every living organism dies and death is part and simultaneously point toward which converge all previous phases. Knowledge and understanding of the process of death and dying are the starting point for the Thanatology and overcoming fear and pain when making preparations for our own death, which are the aim of the study. Death anxiety provides an opportunity to reflect on life to human existence and to prepare for our own inevitable death, in the process it can help many of us have view of life and death passing through the present and the future, existence and non-existence, metaphysics and physical science. Death is a part of life and overcoming death anxiety is the agenda of daily life, therefore, the question of death is very relevant to that of life. Life and Death Studies explores how the question affects individuals, families, communities, and cultures. In this respect Life and Death Studies has to redefine and expand its area from the perspective of the study based on Oriental thought; life and death are the same, in comparison with Western study, Thanatology which focuses on dying and death. Life and Death Studies relies on collaboration with many different fields of study. Because death is such a broad and complex subject, it needs a holistic approach. It is primarily an interdisciplinary study, frequently undertaken by professionals in humanities, social sciences, medical science, religion and mythology. To develop Life and Death Studies as a field of academic disciplines, there must be an accurate definition, theories, critical research area and academic features as convergence studies. Life and Death Studies as convergence studies, especially Korean Life and Death Studies, is urgently called for an effort to analyze research achievements so far and to establish concepts and theories to consolidate its area as academic disciplines. On this view, this study is carried out to examine the theses for master and doctoral degrees and journal articles in Korea and to contribute to the advancement of ‘Korean Life and Death Studies’ by discussing developmental potential and critical research area as interdisciplinary convergence studies.
