노인 스트레스와 자아존중감 및 생활만족도와의 관계 = The Relation among Life Stress, Life Satisfaction and Self-Esteem of the Elderly in Korea

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the elderly people's life stress and life satisfaction, especially the moderating and mediating effects of self-esteem in Korea using structural equational modeling.
The presumption of this study is that moderator and mediator, self-esteem may serve as vulnerable or strengthful factor, based on stress-vulnerability model and stress-resistance model.
For this purpose, sample of 245 elderly people who are participating at senior citizen centers and welfare centers in Daegu and Gyeungbuk province were asked to complete Stress Scale for the Korean Elderly, Self-Esteem Scale and Life Satisfaction Scale.
In analyzing this data, this study employed statistical terms and methods such as descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, Cronbach's alpha and the Structural Equation Model(SEM), SPSS 18.0 and AMOS 7.0 program; in clarifying the significance of moderating effects and mediating effects, the Sobel test was used.
Data was analyzed using SEM and to explore the moderating effects and mediating effects of self-esteem on the relation between life stress and life satisfaction. of the Korean elderly. In addition to SEM, the data was analyzed by multiple regression to explore the moderating effects of self-esteem of the Elderly.
The findings were as follows:
(1) The correlation coefficients of the study variables were statistically significant
(2) The relation between stress and life satisfaction varied according to the level of self-esteem; thus, self-esteem acted as a moderating variable. The moderating effect of self-esteem meant that the strength of the relationship between stress and life satisfaction differed by the level of the self-esteem. This results showed that individuals with low-esteem were more likely to be depressed when experiencing severe stress compared to those with high self-esteem.
(3) Stress had indirect effects on life satisfaction mediated by self-esteem. That is, self-esteem can be lowered by stress and then, lower self-esteem can affect life satisfaction. It means that self-esteem is mediating factor between stress and life satisfaction.
In this study, it was shown that self-esteem acts both as a moderating and mediating variable between life stress and life satisfaction. Based on these results, theoretical and practical implications as well as suggestion for future research in this area were discussed.
