A psychotherapy that uses films as a therapeutic tool is called cinematherapy. This therapy can be divided into cinema viewing and movie making therapy. Cinema viewing therapy consists of a counselor and a client, and it can be divided again into a self-help and interactive cinematherapy in the perspective of text. In a self-help cinematherapy, the therapeutic effect occurs automatically in the film viewers or clients themselves who watch and read films. In contrast, in an interactive cinematherapy, a counselor helps a client to integrate certain aspects of his/her life, with locating the film text between them.
This study analyzed and compared the therapeutic factors of selp-help and interactive cinematherapy, using both quantitative and qualitative method. First, an Unstructured questionnaire was administered to 138 participants. Their responses were summarized into a preliminary 135 items, 21 subscales, with 5-point Likert scale format. The preliminary questionnaire were administered to 70 of selp-help group and 103 of interactive group. As a result, a cinematherapy therapeutic scale was finally developed, with proper validity and reliability. It consists of final 34 items and 6 subscales. After the development, the inter-correlation analysis on the 6 subscales was performed in each group.
The result showed that the statistically significant therpeutic factors of cinematherapy were affective factor(positive and negative), cognitive factor(introspection), identification factor, and interpersonal relationship factor(interpersonal and communication). Furthermore, the inter-correlation analysis revealed that: First, positive affective factor and negative affective factor seemed to take quite different psychological pathways. Second, although both positive and negative affective factor were associated to introspection factor, negative factor seemed to have strong relationship with communication desire early in the stage of self-help cinematherapy. Third, unlike positive affective factor, negative affective factor is gradually related to introspection, through the interactive cinematherapy. Finally, introspection factor is negatively correlated to the communication desire in both groups.
In summary, the more correlations and more significant relationship among the 6 factors were discovered in the interactive cinematherapy, although self-help cinematherapy itself has its own therapeutic effects. Therefore, it is assumed that with a therapist’s guide and help, more integration and interaction would occur in an interactive cinematherapy. In conclusion, an <Affection-Cognition-Interpersonal Relationship Model of Therapeutic Factors of Cinematherapy> was suggested.
