This study is a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design to examine the effects of cinema therapy on schizophrenia patients' depression and self esteem.
The research period was from November 2009 to April 2010. Participants were 40 people who liked movies, who did not have any special problem of cognitive function, who were under the weekly rehabilitation program at two mental health facilities in J city, and who voluntarily signed to take part in the study.
The experimental group included 20 people and the control group included the remaining 20 people. Depression and self esteem were measured before and after the cinema therapy and the changes were compared between groups. The cinema therapy was conducted seven times:twice a week for three weeks and once in the fourth week. Self-Rating Depression scale developed by Zung (1965) and translated by Jo (1988) was used to measure the degree of depression and self esstem scale developed by Rosenberg (1965) and translated by Jeon (1974) was used to measure the degree of self esteem.
The findings were like the following;
1. After the cinema therapy, depression of schizophrenia patients in experimental group was lowered compared with that of patients in control group, and the difference was statistically significant.
2. After the cinema therapy, self esteem of schizophrenia patients in experimental group was improved compared with that of patients in control group, and the difference was statistically significant.
This study found that the cinema therapy was a useful program leading positive effects on depression and self esteem in schizophrenia patients. Therefore, it is needed for more freguent applicantion of the therapy and more replication studies accordingly to promote active utilization.
