        HISTORY AND TIMELESSNESS IN A SHORT STORY BY MIKLÓS MÉSZÖLY

        본 연구논문에서 저명한 헝가리 작가인 메쒜이 미끌로쉬 (Mészöly Miklós)의 단편소설을 해석해 보았다. 해석에 앞서 우선 서사학의 몇 가지 기본 개념에 대한 정의를 살펴 보았으며, 본문에서는 세 가지 스토리라인(story-line)을 구성해 보았다. 이 스토리라인은 반복되는 모티브(’누군가를 직면하는 것’ 과 ’누군가에게 등을 돌리는 것’)를 가지고 있으며, 서사 내에서 대립되는 것 또한 드러내고 있다. 구조적으로 유사한 이러한 두 이미지(그림이라는 정지된 이미지와 마을의 이야기에서 나타나는 „움직이는 영상”)는 인간의 불완전성이 휴머니티를 조건으로 하는 시간적 차원의 것임을 보여주기 위해 대조적으로 장치된 것이라고 할 수 있다. In this paper I give an interpretation of a short story by the renowned Hungarian writer, Miklós Mészöly. After defining some basic concepts of narratology, I map three story-lines in the text. The story-lines contain recurrent motifs (’facing somebody’ and ’turning one’s back on somebody’) and also point to an opposition within the narrative. The two, structurally similar images (a still image – a painting – and a „motion picture” – the story of a town) are contrasted to show that human fallibility is a result of the temporal dimension humanity is subject to.

      • Contribution to the pathogenic fungi on woody plants in North Korea

        <P>This paper presents the first checklist of pathogenic fungi on woody plants in North Korea. The checklist enumerates 146 species of fungi belonging to 79 genera, growing on 108 host plants belonging to 58 genera and 35 families. Two hosts and 57 fungal species represent first records in North Korea.</P>

      • Traditional Festive Days in the Czech Republic

        모든 개인과 공동체에 있어, 축제일들을 경축하는 전통은 매우 중요하다 하겠다. 계절의 변화와 밀접한 관련을 맺는 축일들은 우리들로 하여금 시간의 흐름을 인식하게 하고 친지들이나 친구들 게다가 우리 자신들에 대해 재고할 수 있는 계기를 제공한다는 데 하나의 의미를 부여할 수 있겠다. 본논문은, 체코의여러전통들이그특징상유럽의다른국가들의그것들 과 유사한 면을 지니고 있음을 보일 뿐만 아니라 체코 자체 내 각 지역이나 가족에 따라 일정한 차이를 보이고 있음을 논의할 것이다. 체코전역에는다채롭고도흥미진진한민속풍습들이존재한다. 그중에서 대부분은 종교(기독교)적 성격을 지닌 축일들과 관련을 맺고 있는 반면 그 기원이 기독교가 전파되기 이전의 시기까지 거슬러 올라가는 것들도 있다. 본 논문을 통해 독자들은 체코인들이 과거에 어떻게 자신들의 명절들(특히 봄 축제들, 부활절 그리고 체코의 모든 가정에 가장 인기있는 성탄절)을 경축하고 또한 오늘날까지 이를 계승하고 있는지를 알게 될 것이다. 본고는 또한 새해나 동방박사 축일, 사순절이나 강림절 시기의 축제들에 대해서도 논의할 것이다. For every community and individual the tradition in celebrating festive days is very important. The festive days which are connected with the change of seasons make us realize the change of time and reconsider the relations to our relatives and friends and to ourselves as well. This paper shows that many Czech traditions have features similar to those in other countries in Europe but also some, which have distinctive features in the Czech Republic alone, and which differ according to the region or a family. There are a lot of interesting folk customs still alive all over the Czech Republic. Many of them are connected with religious holidays, while others have origins dating from pre-Christian times. In this paper we will see how the Czech people celebrated and continue to celebrate some of their festive days, especially the most joyous spring festival, Easter, and probably the most loved family feast, Christmas. Some other traditional feasts like New Year' Day, feast of the Three Kings, celebrations during the Lenten season or during Advent will also be mentioned.

      • Impact of <i>Mycobacterium ulcerans</i> Biofilm on Transmissibility to Ecological Niches and Buruli Ulcer Pathogenesis

        <▼1><P>The role of biofilms in the pathogenesis of mycobacterial diseases remains largely unknown. <I>Mycobacterium ulcerans,</I> the etiological agent of Buruli ulcer, a disfiguring disease in humans, adopts a biofilm-like structure in vitro and in vivo, displaying an abundant extracellular matrix (ECM) that harbors vesicles. The composition and structure of the ECM differs from that of the classical matrix found in other bacterial biofilms. More than 80 proteins are present within this extracellular compartment and appear to be involved in stress responses, respiration, and intermediary metabolism. In addition to a large amount of carbohydrates and lipids, ECM is the reservoir of the polyketide toxin mycolactone, the sole virulence factor of M. ulcerans identified to date, and purified vesicles extracted from ECM are highly cytotoxic. ECM confers to the mycobacterium increased resistance to antimicrobial agents, and enhances colonization of insect vectors and mammalian hosts. The results of this study support a model whereby biofilm changes confer selective advantages to M. ulcerans in colonizing various ecological niches successfully, with repercussions for Buruli ulcer pathogenesis.</P></▼1><▼2><P><B>Author Summary</B></P><P><B/></P><P>Mycobacterium ulcerans is the etiologic agent of Buruli ulcer, a necrotic skin disease affecting humans living close to wetlands in tropical countries. This mycobacteria resides in water where it could colonize many ecological niches such as aquatic plants, herbivorous animals, and water bugs. The latter were shown to be able to transmit the bacteria to mammalian hosts. Here, we described that the bacilli could be structured with a thick envelope called the extracellular matrix (ECM). This peculiar coat contains in small vesicles a toxin named mycolactone, the main virulence factor of M. ulcerans. The ECM confers to the mycobacterium increased resistance to antimicrobial agents and plays a role in virulence. Indeed, a bacteria with ECM is more potent for colonization of insect vectors and mammalian hosts compared to bacteria. Unraveling the regulation of the production of the ECM together with the export of mycolactone will be an important step in developing new pharmacological approaches for the treatment of Buruli ulcer, which has been greatly handicapped by the lack of effectiveness of the current antibiotics.</P></▼2>

      • Phase selection and nanocrystallization in Cu-free soft magnetic FeSiNbB amorphous alloy upon rapid annealing

        <P>Nucleation of soft magnetic Fe3Si nanocrystals in Cu-free Fe74.5Si15.5Nb3B7 alloy, upon rapid (10 s) and conventional (30 min) annealing, was investigated using x-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, Mossbauer spectroscopy, and atom probe tomography. By employing rapid annealing, preferential nucleation of Fe3Si nanocrystals was achieved, whereas otherwise there is simultaneous nucleation of both Fe3Si and undesired Fe-B compound phases. Analysis revealed that the enhanced Nb diffusivity, achieved during rapid annealing, facilitates homogeneous nucleation of Fe3Si nanocrystals while shifting the secondary Fe-B crystallization to higher temperatures resulting in pure soft magnetic nanocrystallization with very low coercivities of similar to 10 A/m.       • Combined hydrogen and lithium beam emission spectroscopy observation system for Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research.

        <P>A novel beam emission spectroscopy observation system was designed, built, and installed onto the Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research tokamak. The system is designed in a way to be capable of measuring beam emission either from a heating deuterium or from a diagnostic lithium beam. The two beams have somewhat complementary capabilities: edge density profile and turbulence measurement with the lithium beam and two dimensional turbulence measurement with the heating beam. Two detectors can be used in parallel: a CMOS camera provides overview of the scene and lithium beam light intensity distribution at maximum few hundred Hz frame rate, while a 4 ?? 16 pixel avalanche photo-diode (APD) camera gives 500 kHz bandwidth data from a 4 cm ?? 16 cm region. The optics use direct imaging through lenses and mirrors from the observation window to the detectors, thus avoid the use of costly and inflexible fiber guides. Remotely controlled mechanisms allow adjustment of the APD camera's measurement location on a shot-to-shot basis, while temperature stabilized filter holders provide selection of either the Doppler shifted deuterium alpha or lithium resonance line. The capabilities of the system are illustrated by measurements of basic plasma turbulence properties.</P>

        Mutations in <i>ATP1A1</i> Cause Dominant Charcot-Marie-Tooth Type 2

        <P>Although mutations in more than 90 genes are known to cause CMT, the underlying genetic cause of CMT remains unknown in more than 50% of affected individuals. The discovery of additional genes that harbor CMT2-causing mutations increasingly depends on sharing sequence data on a global level. In this way—by combining data from seven countries on four continents—we were able to define mutations in <I>ATP1A1</I>, which encodes the alpha1 subunit of the Na<SUP>+</SUP>,K<SUP>+</SUP>-ATPase, as a cause of autosomal-dominant CMT2. Seven missense changes were identified that segregated within individual pedigrees: c.143T>G (p.Leu48Arg), c.1775T>C (p.Ile592Thr), c.1789G>A (p.Ala597Thr), c.1801_1802delinsTT (p.Asp601Phe), c.1798C>G (p.Pro600Ala), c.1798C>A (p.Pro600Thr), and c.2432A>C (p.Asp811Ala). Immunostaining peripheral nerve axons localized ATP1A1 to the axolemma of myelinated sensory and motor axons and to Schmidt-Lanterman incisures of myelin sheaths. Two-electrode voltage clamp measurements on <I>Xenopus</I> oocytes demonstrated significant reduction in Na<SUP>+</SUP> current activity in some, but not all, ouabain-insensitive ATP1A1 mutants, suggesting a loss-of-function defect of the Na<SUP>+</SUP>,K<SUP>+</SUP> pump. Five mutants fall into a remarkably narrow motif within the helical linker region that couples the nucleotide-binding and phosphorylation domains. These findings identify a CMT pathway and a potential target for therapy development in degenerative diseases of peripheral nerve axons.</P>
