Polyurea membrane for water cleaning: Kinetic and equilibrium modeling of dyes adsorption

del Campo Calvo Pablo,de Oliveira Lilian Karla,de Oliveira Nicole Aparecida Amorim,Molina Eduardo Ferreira 한국화학공학회 2023 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.40 No.12

The present treatment of water from aqueous solutions, reported from our research work, uses polyurea (PU) as a novel adsorbent. Specifically, the adsorption efficacy of PU was tested in dyes with different characteristics (Congo red (CR) and methylene blue (MB)). The PU membrane was obtained by a sol-gel chemistry reaction of polyetheramine with polyisocyanate resulting in the formation of urea groups, confirmed through FTIR analysis. The polymeric membrane exhibited a high homogeneity, making it a viable purifying technology for wastewater. The high swelling capacity of the membrane played a crucial role in the CR dye diffusion/adsorption. Notably, PU membranes showed excellent adsorption to CR anionic dye, resulting in a removal efficiency over 85%. However, MB dye adsorption was less favorable, suggesting a high affinity with anionic species. Our analysis revealed that the adsorption of CR dye onto PU membranes follows the pseudo-second order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models. Moreover, the intra-particle diffusion model demonstrated that the swelling of PU facilitates the adsorption/diffusion process, thereby accelerating the mass transfer of the CR dye onto the membrane. Overall, our findings suggest that PU membranes derived from commercially available reagents are highly promising for the decontamination of dye wastewater.

Improved extraction of carrageenan from red seaweed (Chondracantus canaliculatus) using ultrasound-assisted methods and evaluation of the yield, physicochemical properties and functional groups

        Angelina Martın-del-Campo,Jose Antonio Fermın-Jimenez,Vıctor Vladimir Fernandez-Escamilla,Zazil Yadel Escalante-Garcıa,Marıa Esther Macıas-Rodrıguez,Yokiushirdhilgilmara Estrada-Giron 한국식품과학회 2021 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.30 No.7

Red seaweed Chondracanthus canaliculatus, anunderexploited algae species, was used as a potentialsource for the obtaining of carrageenan. Seaweed wastreated under alkaline conditions using ultrasound alone orcombined with conventional procedures, to improve theyield extraction. Color, syneresis behavior, water retentioncapacity, and functional groups of the gelling and nongellingfractions of carrageenan were determined; theseproperties were compared with those of commercial carrageenansnamed A and B. Ultrasound alone or with heatsignificantly (p\0.05) increased the yield extraction up to41–45% and influenced color parameters, in comparisonwith conventional treatments. Functional groups kappa andiota, and alginates, were confirmed in both carrageenanfractions. Syneresis behavior was well fitted to a thirddegreepolynomial equation within days 1 to 6, after which,it reached a plateau. While, the use of ultrasound at roomtemperature gave carrageenan properties more similar tothose of the commercial carrageenan type A.

International Exhibitions as a Cultural Link: Conservation of Cultural Heritage

( Rosana Calderón Martin Del Campo ) 부경대학교 글로벌지역학연구소 2018 Journal of Global and Area Studies(JGA) Vol.2 No.1

The cultural heritage of a nation is everything that affirms the values, ways of life, representations of the world, ideas, knowledge, customs, traditions and dreams of the social group that composes it. Cultural heritage, therefore, encompasses both materials and immaterial entity which includes all the possible visions to illustrate how human beings are linked to different customs, social status, educational levels, ethnic origins within a society. The preservation of cultural heritage is not only based on national and international legal provisions, but also on direct activities to prevent, stop, and, reverse the physical deterioration of archaeological, historical and artistic monuments. Moreover, its preservation only makes sense if it fulfills the function as a binding element of rootedness to the present and future generation. Mexico is a country of great cultural and ethnic diversity, so its cultural heritage is extremely broad and diverse. The conservation-restoration of cultural heritage in Mexico is an activity of great importance, which has required specialization in diverse efforts from the relevant fields. In this context, the Universal Exhibition can be a good example to discuss the current issues addressed here in this article. The purpose of the exhibition which is held every five years is to promote economic, touristic, and cultural significance of each participating country. Additionally, the exhibition includes multiple forums to discuss such as iconic objects of the pre-Hispanic cultures, vice regal period, and modern and contemporary art. This type of exhibition requires preventive conservation strategies to control environmental conditions around collections and to minimize any possible alteration during their exhibition period. It provides a great opportunity to share and compare experiences with professionals in this field regarding scientific and technical advances. Thus, the Universal Exhibition in Shanghai 2010 was mainly discussed in this article with regard to implementing preventive conservation strategies in detail.

Development of a Leading Performance Indicator from Operational Experience and Resilience in a Nuclear Power Plant

Nelson, Pamela F.,Martin-Del-Campo, Cecilia,Hallbert, Bruce,Mosleh, Ali Korean Nuclear Society 2016 Nuclear Engineering and Technology Vol.48 No.1

The development of operational performance indicators is of utmost importance for nuclear power plants, since they measure, track, and trend plant operation. Leading indicators are ideal for reducing the likelihood of consequential events. This paper describes the operational data analysis of the information contained in the Corrective Action Program. The methodology considers human error and organizational factors because of their large contribution to consequential events. The results include a tool developed from the data to be used for the identification, prediction, and reduction of the likelihood of significant consequential events. This tool is based on the resilience curve that was built from the plant's operational data. The stress is described by the number of unresolved condition reports. The strain is represented by the number of preventive maintenance tasks and other periodic work activities (i.e., baseline activities), as well as, closing open corrective actions assigned to different departments to resolve the condition reports (i.e., corrective action workload). Beyond the identified resilience threshold, the stress exceeds the station's ability to operate successfully and there is an increased likelihood that a consequential event will occur. A performance indicator is proposed to reduce the likelihood of consequential events at nuclear power plants.

        스페인 협동조합의 재무구조와 회계처리 분석

        ( Polo-garrido ),( Fernando ),( Sanchez-campos ),( Maria Del Mar ) 한국협동조합학회 2018 韓國協同組合硏究 Vol.36 No.3

This paper deals with the financial structure of cooperative societies in Spain and their accountancy. Bearing this objective in mind, first we describe the legal framework of cooperatives in Spain which is characterized by a pluralist framework. Cooperatives are a regional government legal competence (Autonomous Communities) resulting in 16 Autonomic (Regional) Cooperatives’ Laws plus a State Cooperatives’ Law. In addition, Credit (Bank) Cooperatives have a sectoral Law. We study the changes motivated by the international accounting harmonization in the Spanish GAAP and the Spanish Accounting Standards for Cooperatives, also the subsequent changes in the Cooperatives’ Laws in order to introduce a new and optional regimen of members’ shares that can retain the accounting classification of members’ shares as equity. We critically review the criteria of IAS 32 and IFRIC 2 to classify members’ shares as equity or liability. Financial resources are described comprehensively; we focus in financial resources obtained from members and self-financing, we highlight the new sources of finances (shared titles and special participations), a new hybrid cooperative form, mixed cooperatives and the commented introduction of a new and optional regimen of members’ shares whose redemption can be refused by the cooperative. Conclusions are set out on financial structure and accounting standards. We point out the difficult balance between Cooperative Principles and financing needs. New forms of financing and hybrid cooperatives have the risk of denaturalization of the cooperative. From accounting standards is highlighted their impact in cooperatives (Polo, 2014), they have motivated changes in the regimen of members’ shares, changes that otherwise ha not been introduced. Finally, a very short reference is made about the current IASB’s Discussion Paper “Financial Instruments of characteristic of equity”.

Subjective Evaluation of Mood and Cognitive Functions in a General Neurology Clinic: Patients versus Informants

        Adolfo Jiménez-Huete,Antonio Del Barrio,Elena Riva,Pablo Campo,Rafael Toledano,Oriol Franch 대한신경과학회 2017 Journal of Clinical Neurology Vol.13 No.3

Background and Purpose We aimed to determine the correlation between subjective evaluations of mood and cognitive functions by patients and informants, and the findings of a battery of neuropsychological tests. Methods We analyzed 74 subjects recruited from a general neurology clinic, comprising 37 patients with cognitive complaints and 37 informants (either relatives or caregivers in close contact with the patients). Four ordinal scales concerning recent memory, verbal expression, initiative, and mood were correlated with the findings of a series of neuropsychological tests and questionnaires using the tau b coefficient. Results The scores for the patients on the scales were most strongly correlated with scores on the 15-item Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15), while the scores for the informants were most strongly correlated with scores on GDS-15, the Informant Questionnaire on Cognitive Decline, and the Functional Activities Questionnaire (FAQ). The most significant correlation was between the initiative scale from informants and FAQ (tau b=-0.591, p<0.001), and it was the only one that remained significant after correcting for multiple testing (p Holm=0.013). Conclusions Cognitive complaints from patients mainly reflect their mood, whilst informant reports mainly reflect both the functional ability and mood of the patients.

Quantum Performance of Thermal Machines over Many Cycles

        Watanabe, Gentaro,Venkatesh, B. Prasanna,Talkner, Peter,del Campo, Adolfo American Physical Society 2017 Physical Review Letters Vol.118 No.5

<P>The performance of quantum heat engines is generally based on the analysis of a single cycle. We challenge this approach by showing that the total work performed by a quantum engine need not be proportional to the number of cycles. Furthermore, optimizing the engine over multiple cycles leads to the identification of scenarios with a quantum enhancement. We demonstrate our findings with a quantum Otto engine based on a two-level system as the working substance that supplies power to an external oscillator.</P>

PROPERTIES OF THE SCUBA-2 850 μm SOURCES IN THE AKARI NEP-DEEP FIELD

2018 Journal of The Korean Astronomical Society Vol.51 No.3

We carry out the study of SMGs in the $AKARI$ NEP-Deep field using James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) SCUBA-2 850 $\mu$m source catalog released as a part of SCUBA-2 Cosmology Legacy Survey (S2CLS) program. The SCUBA-2 850 $\mu$m map has a root mean square (rms) noise of 1.2 mJy beam$^{-1}$ and covers an area of 0.60 degree$^{2}$. We find 4 sub-millimeter galaxies (SMGs) which have counterparts to $Herschel$ sources with spectroscopic redshifts in the literature. In addition, 3 dust obscured galaxies (DOGs) detected in $Herschel$ bands are also selected as a comparison sample. We derive IR luminosities of SMGs using CIGALE code, which are similar to those of high redshift SMGs from previous studies. The contribution of AGN to the total IR luminosity in SMG (2\%$-$11\%) is smaller than lower limit of that in DOG (19\%$-$35\%), which is consistent with the expectation from the evolutionary scenario of massive galaxies. We search for SMGs in the overdense region as candidates of protocluster and investigate 4 candidates among them including candidates around three DOGs. Finally, we argue that follow-up spectroscopic observation for the NEP-Deep field will provide crucial information to understand the role of SMGs in the evolution of massive galaxies.
