Platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) A and B have essential roles in development and in wound healing. They are highly expressed in the embryo and the adult nervous system. PDGF β receptor, the receptor for PDGF B is also expressed in neurons of the central nervous system and mediates signals into the cytoplasm by tyrosine phosphorylation. The signal transduction pathway of PDGF receptors is well known in fibroblast where PDGF receptors stimulate Ras or Src and finally the expression of immediate early genes to promote cell survival and proliferation. As the first step to understand the PDGF signaling and biological function in the nervous system, we generated an antibody against the extracellular domain of PDGF β receptor and developed as an immunohistochemical reagent to detect the expression of PDGF β receptor in the nervous system. The antiserum was produced from turkey by immunizing the soluble extracellular domain of PDGF β receptor expressed by recombinant baculovirus. The anti-PDGF β receptor antibody was partially purified from antisera by ammonium-sulfate precipitation and DEAE ion-exchange column chromatography. The binding specificity of the isolated antibody was examined by western blot analysis and immunocytochemistry on NIH 3T3 cells which express the PDGF β receptor. This antibody detected the expression of PDGF β receptor in rat sciatic nerve by immunohistochemical method. We report here that the PDGF β receptor is localized on the membrane where axons contact with schwann cells.

<P>Hg(II)-mediated hydration reactions of unsymmetrical quinoline type tolans were studied. The observed accelerated reactions of the tolans rely on the additional binding motifs of the tolan, as supported by the X-ray structure of the macrocycle (2b). The analyte-specific reaction allows us to detect Hg(II) in buffered media.</P>
Analysis of Body Slip and Seat Pressure in Powered Wheelchairs with Two-Slide Recline System

Recline and tilt functions are the most desirable features for relieving seating pressure to decrease the risk of pressure ulcers. This study presents a new recline mechanism for a powered wheelchair for users sitting for a long duration. We analyzed the effect of a developed two-slide mechanism. In this study, body slip distance and buttock pressure were measured during wheelchair reclining and repositioning using a three-dimensional motion analysis and a pressure measurement system in 10 healthy subjects. Non-slide, one-slide, and two-slide versions were compared. During reclining, the total slip distance along the backrest with two slides was 40.6 mm, which was 77% and 44% smaller than non-slide and one-slide backrests, respectively. The slip variation of the non-slide was 38 mm at the beginning of recline in the initial seated position, and the slip distance tended to decrease as the recline angle increased. However, in the two-slide backrest, the average slip distance per 10° interval was only 5.1 ± 1.1 mm. In addition, we observed a similar slip in repositioning as in reclining, and the slip distance along the seat also decreased most in the two-slide backrest. The buttock pressure gradually decreased from 100° to 150° and then increased again from 160°, but the two-slide backrest showed a tendency to decrease at larger angles of recline and decreased by 59% of the maximum pressure. This study confirms that the two-slide system reduces body slip and buttock pressure, and it is expected that risk factors caused by the long-term use of a wheelchair can be minimized.

개방 시스템(Open System) 환경에서 전송되는 전문을 보호하기 위해 ISO에서 정의한 다섯가지 안전성 서비스에 대한 연구는 구현에 대한 연구뿐만 아니라 서비스들 사이의 연계성(Relationship), 서비스의 거절(Denial of Service), 서비스의 실패(Failure) 등을 관리하기 위한 관리 요소(Management Element)에 대한 연구도 진행되어야 한다. 본 논문에서는 안전성 서비스를 OSI 관리측면에서 연구하여 OSI의 응용계층에 구현할 수 있는 안전성 서비스 관리 요소(Security Service Management Element)의 모형을 설계하고 이를 이용하여 ISO에서 정의한 다섯가지 안전성 서비스중 액세스 제어 서비스를 관리할 수 있는 방안을 제시한다.
Temporal Changes of Lung Cancer Mortality in Korea

<P>The lung cancer mortality in Korea has increased remarkably during the last 20 yr, and, it has become the first leading cause of cancer-related deaths since 2000. The aim of the current study was to examine time trends of lung cancer mortality during the period 1984-2003 in Korea, assessing the effects of age, period, and birth cohort. Data on the annual number of deaths due to lung cancer and on population statistics from 1984 to 2003 were obtained from the Korea National Statistical Office. A log-linear Poisson age-period-cohort model was used to estimate the effects of age, period, and birth cohort. The both trends of male and female lung cancer mortality were both explained by age-period-cohort models. The risks of lung cancer mortalities for both genders were shown to decline in recent birth cohorts. The decreasing trends begin with the 1939 birth cohort for men and 1959 for women. The mortality pattern of lung cancer was dominantly explained by a birth cohort effect, possibly related with the change in smoking pattern, for both men and women. Finally, the mortality of lung cancer in Korea is expected to further increase in both men and women for a while.</P>
Chlamydospore Induction from Conidia of Cylindrocarpon destructans Isolated from Ginseng in Korea

Cylindrocarpon destructans causes root rot disease in ginseng and can survive for a long time, producing chlamydospores. We optimized conditions to induce chlamydospore production from the conidia of C. destructans, isolated from Korean ginseng. This will provide the basis for testing the efficacy of control agents targeting these chlamydospores.
