        Experimental studies of suppressing effectiveness on sloshing with two perforated floating plates

        In the present paper, model tests of suppressing sloshing fitted with two perforated floating plates are carried out. The study involves identification of system performance such as the suppression and the solidity ratio. Three different solidity ratios of perforated plates have been tried out as potential positive slosh damping devices. A series of painstaking experiments have been conducted in a rigid rectangular tank on six degrees of freedom motion platform under roll harmonic excitation. Comparison of the clean tank shows that the three types of perforated plates are all effective on damping the run-up and impact pressure along the bulkhead. The parametric study indicates that the perforated plate with the median solidity ratio is the most optimal one in suppressing sloshing among three configurations.

      • Associations of ABCB1 and XPC Genetic Polymorphisms with Susceptibility to Colorectal Cancer and Therapeutic Prognosis in a Chinese Population

        Associations between ABCB1 and XPC genetic polymorphisms and risk of developing colorectal cancer (CRC) as well as clinical outcomes in CRCs with chemotherapy were investigated. A case-control study was performed on the ABCB1 C3435T, G2677T/A and XPC Lys939Gln polymorphisms in 428 CRC cases and 450 hospitalbased, age and sex frequency-matched controls using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) assays. We observed that the ABCB1 3435CT or CC+CT variants were significantly linked with increasing risk of developing CRC (adjusted OR (95% CI): 1.814 (1.237-2.660), P=0.0022; adjusted OR (95% CI): 1.605 (1.117-2.306), P=0.0102, respectively). Moreover, the distribution frequency of XPC AC genotype or AC+CC genotypes also showed a tendency towards increasing the suscepbility for CRC (P=0.0759 and P=0.0903, respectively). Kaplan-Meier curves showed that the ABCB1 C3435T variant was associated with a tendency toward longer progression-free survival (PFS) (n=343, Log-rank test: P=0.063), and the G2677T/A variant genotypes (GT+TT+GA+AA) with a tendency for longer OS in postoperative oxaliplatin-based patients (n=343, Log-rank test: P=0.082). However, no correlation of the XPC Lys939Gln polymorphism was found with PFS and OS in patients with postoperative oxaliplatin-based chemotherapy (n=343). Our study indicated that ABCB1 polymorphisms might be candidate pharmacogenomic factors for the prediction of CRC susceptibility, but not for prognosis with oxaliplatin chemosensitivity in CRC patients.

      • Differentially Rice Protein Expression Between Rice Bran and Endosperm

        Rice (Oryza sativa L.), the major staple food for more than 60% of the world’s population, offer nutritional and health-enhancing properties. Therefore, breeding of new rice species has been fueled by the rising interest in Asian, Latin cuisines, and many countries. In Asia, rice and rice-based ingredients also appeal to both consumers and processors due to their unique combination of taste, nutrition, texture, and biological properties. Proteins and starch in rice are the two major components in rice seed, with approximately 8 and 80%, respectively. Especially in traditional Asian diet, rice seed contributes to about 28-54% of the protein source. The major rice proteins, including structural, metabolic, protective, and storage proteins, serve as sources of nitrogen, sulfur, and carbon for several important physiological functions. In our previous study also demonstrated that rice protein prolamin activated human mononuclear cells to produce cytokines and enhance anti-leukemic immunity. The present study aimed to compare the differentially expression of rice proteins with bran and endosperm by 2-dimentional electrophoresis (2-DE) and mass spectrometric assay. Several protein spots in 2-DE gel with different expression were isolated and identified. The results showed that the major proteins were metabolic, transporter, storage, antioxidant, disease resistant, and development-related proteins. Further investigation to clarify the different manifestations and functions of these proteins might contribute to development of new rice varieties and breeding with unique features.

      • Low Prevalence of HPV in Male Sexual Partners of HR-HPV Infected Females and Low Concordance of Viral Types in Couples in Eastern Guangdong

        Objective: To investigate the prevalence of genital high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) in male sexual partners of HR-HPV infected women and the concordance of viral types in couples in China, and comprehend the role of men play in HPV transmission to women. Methods/Materials: 94 asymptomatic women and their husbands from rural Chaozhou participated in epidemiologic screening for HPV infection. Cervical cells from females were collected for high risk HPV screening by real time-PCR, and they were positive for at least 1 of 13 HR-HPV subtypes, then these samples were genotyped. Approximately one mouth later, penile epithelial cells from 94 asymptomatic husbands were collected for HPV genotyping. At the same time, a cross-sectional study was conducted in 366 male patients from sexually transmitted disease (STD) outpatient clinic in China for the prevalence of genital HR-HPV infection in men having frequent sex behavior. Penial epithelial cells were collected for HPV 6/11 and HPV 16/18 detection by fluorescent real-time quantified PCR. Results: Among 94 couples, the prevalence of genital HR-HPV infection in men whose wife was positive for cervical HR-HPV was 5.32% (5/94). Only 2.63% (2/76) had the same high risk viral type presented by their wife. HPV 16 proved to be the most prevalent viral type in men and in couples. Of 366 male patients from STD outpatient clinic, the prevalence of HPV 16/18 infection in men with or without HPV 6/11 was 6.85% and 8.16%, respectively. The incidence of HPV 16/18 was higher in men aged more than 35 years than the young men (18-35 years). Conclusion: The prevalence of genital HR-HPV infection in male sexual partners of HPV-positive women in China was lower than that expected, and the concordance of high risk viral type between couples was extremely low. These data suggested that infected men consitute an important viral reservoir, contributing to transmission of HR-HPV to women and maintenance of infection, but HR-HPV infection may be less likely to persist in men than in women.

        Influence of differential leadership on teachers' professional ethics: an empirical study from Chinese universities

        In Chinese society, the teachers’ professional ethics have been considered important since ancient times and have been widely discussed. This paper aims to explore the mechanism of the infuence of diferential leadership with local cultural adapt‑ ability on college teachers’ professional ethics. A total of 403 valid responses were collected from a questionnaire survey of university teachers in many regions of China, and the data were statistically analysed by SPSS17.0 and AMOS22.0. The results showed that diferential leadership positively infuences college teachers’ professional ethics, and college teachers’ professional identity plays a mediating role between diferential leadership and teachers’ professional ethics. The efect of diferential leadership on college teachers’ professional identity and professional ethics is negatively moderated by the tendency towards collectivism, and it seems to be contrary to the national culture of Chinese, which is high in collectivism, but consistent with the strong will of college teachers and the current workplace characteristics embodied in the sample investigated. It is expected that the research results of this paper can provide theoretical guidance for the construction of teachers’ professional ethics in relevant governments and colleges.

        수온별 아질산 급성 노출에 따른 넙치, Paralichthys olivaceus의 혈액학적 성상 및 혈장성분의 영향

        Olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) (Weight 110.9±17.1 g, length 22.3±1.2 cm) were exposed to waterborne nitrite at 0, 30, 60, 120, 240, 480 and 960 mg NO<sub>2</sub> <sup>-</sup>/L according to water temperature at 20℃ and 25℃ for 96 hours. The lethal concentration 50 (LC<sub>50</sub>) of olive flounder, P. olivaceus exposed to waterborne nitrite was 513.87 mg NO<sub>2</sub> <sup>-</sup>/L at 20℃ and 208.35 mg NO<sub>2</sub> <sup>-</sup>/L at 25℃, which means a significant difference in LC<sub>50</sub> by the water temperature. Hemoglobin and hematocrit were significantly decreased by waterborne nitrite exposure. The inorganic component, plasma calcium, was significantly decreased, and the organic components such as plasma glucose and cholesterol were significantly decreased showing a similar tendency with calcium. In enzymatic components, the AST and ALP were also significantly decreased by nitrite exposure. The results of this study indicate that exposure to nitrite can affect the survival and hematological physiology of P. olivaceus, and the effect of exposure to nitrite had a significant effect on nitrite toxicity depending on the water temperature.

      • Transmembrane Protein 166 Expression in Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma in Xinjiang, China

        Objective: Transmembrane protein 166 (TMEM166) expression in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) and remote normal esophageal tissues was examined to assess any role in tumour biology. Methods: TMEM166 mRNA expression in 36 cases with ESCC (36 tumour samples, 36 remote normal esophageal tissue samples) was detected by RT-PCR. TMEM166 protein expression was analysed in paraffin-embedded tissue samples from the same cases by immunohistochemistry. Results: Semi-quantitative analysis showed TMEM166 mRNA expression in ESCCs to be significantly lower than in remote normal esophageal tissues ($0.759{\pm}0.713$ vs. $2.622{\pm}1.690$, P=0.014). TMEM166 protein expression was also significantly reduced (69.4% vs. 94.4%, P<0.01). Conclusion: TMEM166 mRNA and protein expression demonstrated significant reduction in ESCCs compared with remote esophageal tissues, albeit with no correlation with tumour size, differentiation, stage, and lymph node metastasis, suggesting a role in regulating autophagic and apoptotic processes in the ESCC.

        Molecular characterization of a delta class glutathione S-transferase gene from the black cutworm Agrotis ipsilon

        In insects, glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) play essential roles in the detoxification of xenobiotic toxins and elimination of oxidative stress induced by toxic compounds. In the present study, a delta class GST gene (AiGSTd) was identified and characterized in the black cutworm, Agrotis ipsilon (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). The deduced protein sequence of AiGSTd contained highly conserved features of GST enzymes and shared high identities with its orthologs from other lepidopteran species. Recombinant AiGSTD protein was expressed in Escherichia coli and purified. The protein displayed the GSH-dependent conjugating activity toward the substrate 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene (CDNB). Moreover, AiGSTD had the ability to protect DNA from oxidative damage, and the E. coli cells overexpressing AiGSTD showed long-term resistance to oxidative stress. The AiGSTd transcripts were most abundant in the larval midgut. Exposure to chlorpyrifos and lambda-cyhalothrin increased lipid peroxidation in larvae and significantly upregulated AiGSTd expression levels. This study is the first report of molecular characterization of a GST in A. ipsilon, and the present study suggest that AiGSTD might be involved in protecting against the oxidative stress induced by insecticides.
