남송중기 황간(黃榦)이 한양군(漢陽軍)에서 실시한 진휼(賑恤) -그의 황정(荒政) 기록을 통해서 본 이곳 거주민의 모습-

This article examines the relief works performed by Huang Gan who was a great Daoxue(道學) scholar as well as the local governor of the Hanyang prefecture in the mid-Southern Song period. Through this research, some significant discoveries about the local situations of the backward regions like the Hanyang prefecture and the local relief system during the Southern Song could have been made. Above all, the Hanyang prefecture had different relief system from the other regions then. While the Hanyang prefecture did not have any disaster relief agency like Yicang(義倉), the state-operating granaries like the Changpingcang(常平倉), which had usually played the role of the adjustment of grain prices in the regions, took over the role of the Yichang. When Huang took the post of prefect, a severe drought struck the region. Since it quickly revealed that the drought was beyond the limitations of Changpingcang, Huang established a new relief organization like the Baowu(保伍) system, an organization of mutual assistance by the local people. By allowing the local rich to provide the poor with the relief rice, the Southern Song government rewarded government posts to the rich as compensation instead. Through the Baowu system, in addition, Huang was able to grasp the exact circumstances of the damage with considerable efficiency. Not only as the local prefect but as a Daoxue scholar, on the other hand, Huang eventually succeeded in drought relief through establishing a local autonomous relief system like the Shecang(社倉) by Zhu Xi(朱熹)’s. Above of all, however, the most significant contribution of this research is that it kindly helped us to understand how the local government and local community could have coped with the severe disaster together during the Southern Song period.

Single crystalline silicon wafers having (100), (110), and (111) directions are employed as specimens for obtaining slowness profiles. Leaky Lamb waves (LLW) from immersed wafers were detected by varying the incident angles of the specimens and rotating the specimens. From an analysis of LLW signals for different propagation directions and phase velocities of each specimen, slowness profiles were obtained, which showed a unique symmetry with different symmetric axes. Slowness profiles were compared with elastic moduli of each wafer. They showed the same symmetries as crystal structures. In addition, slowness profiles showed expected patterns and values that can be inferred from elastic moduli. This implies that slowness profiles can be used to examine crystal structures of anisotropic solids.
Zombie Chasing: Efficient Flash Management Considering Dirty Data in the Buffer Cache

This paper presents a novel technique, called Zombie Chasing, for efficient flash management in solid state drives (SSDs). Due to the unique characteristics of NAND flash memory, SSDs need to accurately understand the liveness of the data stored in themselves. Recently, the TRIM command has been introduced to notify SSDs of dead data caused by file deletions, which otherwise could not be tracked by SSDs. This paper goes one step further and proposes a new liveness state, called the zombie state, to denote live data that will be dead shortly due to the corresponding dirty data in the buffer cache. We also devise new zombie-aware garbage collection algorithms which utilize the information about such zombie data inside SSDs. To evaluate Zombie Chasing, we implement zombie-aware garbage collection algorithms in the prototype SSD and modify the Linux kernel and the Oracle DBMS to deliver the information on the zombie data to the prototype SSD. Through comprehensive evaluations using our in-house micro-benchmark and the TPC-C benchmark, we observe that Zombie Chasing improves SSD performance effectively by reducing garbage collection overhead. Especially, our evaluation with the TPC-C benchmark on the Oracle DBMS shows that Zombie Chasing enhances the Transactions Per Second (TPS) value by up to 22% with negligible overhead.

Currently, the type of short insertions and deletions (InDels) polymorphisms are increasingly focused in genomic research. InDels have been known as a source of genetic markers that are widely spread across the genome. Genetic relationship among Korean pear cultivars compared with their parents was also identified that they are closely related P. pyrifolia, P. ussuriensis and/or hybrids between two species. Lack of genetic resources including molecular markers has made it difficult to study pears severely. Recently developed next generation sequencing (NGS) platforms offer opportunities for high-throughput and inexpensive genome sequencing and rapid marker development. The main goal of this study was to develop polymorphic InDel markers in ‘Whangkeumbae’ and ‘Minibae’, which were chosen as the representative cultivars of P. pyrifolia and P. ussuriensis × pyrifolia in each among Korean pears using genomic sequences generated by NGS technology. In this study, more than 18.6 Gbp and 15.8 Gbp sequences were obtained from NGS of ‘Whangkeumbae’ and ‘Minibae’, respectively. ‘Whangkeumbae’ contained 197,210 InDels and 197,272 InDels in ‘Minibae’. In InDels validations between ‘Whangkeumbae’ and ‘Minibae’, the number of polymorphic InDels were 149,338 and non-polymorphic InDels were 122,572. For InDel primer set designing, 11,308 of primers were designed from polymorphic InDels and 10,919 of InDel primers were recommended. The study shows that the utility of NGS technology to design amount of efficient InDels and the developed InDel primers will be used for genetic mapping, breeding by marker assisted selection (MAS) and QTL mapping of Korea native pear as well as further genetic studies.

Background/Aims: This study was performed to clarify influences of anticentromere antibody (ACA) on clinical phenotypes of primary Sjögren’s syndrome (pSS) patients in Korea. Methods: We assessed 318 patients who met the 2016 American College of Rheumatology/European League Against Rheumatism classification criteria for pSS. All patients were selected from the Korean Initiative of primary Sjögren’s Syndrome (KISS), a prospective cohort. Among them, 53 patients were positive for ACA, while another 265 patients were not. We compared various clinical data including demographic features, extra-glandular manifestations (EGMs), clinical indices, and laboratory values available from the KISS database between the two groups. Results: Patients in the ACA-positive pSS group were older (p = 0.042), and had higher xerostomia inventory scores (p = 0.040), whereas glandular dysfunction represented with Schirmer I test was more severe in the ACA-negative group. More frequent Raynaud’s phenomenon and liver involvement (both p < 0.001) and less articular involvement (p = 0.037) were observed among the EGMs in the ACA-positive group. Less frequency of leukopenia (p = 0.021), rheumatoid factor (p < 0.001), anti-Ro/SSA antibody positivity (p < 0.001), and hypergammaglobulinemia (p = 0.006), as well as higher positivity rates of anti-nuclear antibody and anti-topoisomerase antibody (p < 0.001 and p = 0.006, respectively) were found in the laboratory data in the ACA-positive pSS group. Conclusions: Considering distinct phenotypes in hematological and serological features and EGMs, we should monitor the occurrence of these clinical features among pSS patients with ACA in caution.
