A Portrait of Korean Won-Buddhist’s Mind Practice Experiences: Focusing on Higher Aspects from the Ways of Evolving to Inner Maturity

This paper presents a portrait of a Korean woman Wonmahn (pseudonym) who engaged in Won Buddhist religious life including Mind Practice. Mind Practice allows the participant to reflect on one’s own state of mind and observe how it triggers other emotions, feelings, or effects in human relationships and in relation to facing troubles in everyday life. We try to understand how her Mind Practice affected her inner states of mind, feelings, attitudes etc. more deeply based on the “Participant as Ally - Essentialist Portraiture” approach. The in-depth interviews were conducted 6 times between the fall of 2011 and 2013. We tried to find out significant passages of transcripts and then articulate them on her ways of evolving to inner maturity through Mind Practice activities. This portrait illustrates her nature and impression with some alive passages and a timeline for grasping unity or oneness of the whole person. Also she repeatedly tried to be aware of her own mind states whenever she encounter troublesome situations in order to become a better person revealing higher aspects. In this portrait, we explore that such “higher aspects” are related with her values, commitments or inner changes as a whole person. Further we try to understand that her higher aspects are manifested as a “subtle and pervasive inner consciousness” in a person.

George Archibald is an active crane expert who dedicated his life to the conservation of cranes by founding the International Crane Foundation in Wisconsin. The Foundation, established in 1973, has been instrumental in the conservation efforts for 15 species of cranes distributed worldwide except South America. AArchibald's fame grew as many people talked about the story of how he danced with Tex to artificially inseminate the whooping cranes, which were on the verge of extinction. In an autobiographical style, this book shows how George Archibald became immersed in the study of cranes and the journey of his life dedicated to these conservation efforts.

Exploration on Autobiographical Discoveries from Creative Work based on Hooded Crane Dancing

This paper explores the practice of using hooded crane dancing as an aesthetic and spiritual journey towards creative experiences through a gradual understanding of hooded cranes. I first became involved in individual and group performances that observed and mimicked hooded cranes via video clips. A documentary film on the hooded crane (Doori) played a strong role in increasing my awareness and understanding of the ecology of the Suncheon bay wetland conservation area, including hooded cranes. As I became more immersed in my performances, I became more adept at particular movements and reached the level of doing choreography work on my own. In this paper, I have tried to investigate how I was able to reveal my inner self while searching for ideas, modifying story-lines, selecting music, doing choreography and performing a final piece on stage. Data collection was done between September 2014 and May 2016, including field notes, reflective memo taking, photos, video clips and self-recollections. After data analysis and interpretation, I was able to grasp almost 13 aspects related to creative work following Root-Bernstein (Root-Bernstein & Root-Bernstein, 1999). As a professor/researcher/artist, I enjoyed playing with my ideas and body movements, heavily shaped by knowledge accumulated through my understandings on hooded cranes. I also needed to transform existing resources and carefully select an appropriate piece of music for my choreography work by coming up with images or abstract concepts. The course of this journey inwards, enabled by my intimate contact with the world of the Hooded Crane was uplifting, aesthetically and spiritually. Additionally, the course of the journey toward my own creative space in the Suncheon wetlands, where I existed in harmony with the Hooded Crane, lifted my spirit up and allowed me to reach a better place, aesthetically and spiritually. 이 논문은 순천만의 흑두루미를 주제로 한 몸짓과 춤을 만들어 가는 대학 교수의 자전적 사례에서 창의적 활동이 나타나는 양상을 다루고 있다. 연구자는 순천만 야외에서 흑두루미를 관찰하고 모방하는 활동을 자발적으로 하면서 점점 순천만 과 흑두루미에 대한 관심을 더 갖게 되었다. 2013년 이후부터 개인 또는 동아리 형태의 공연 활동을 전개하면서 흑두루미에 대한 관찰과 모방을 통한 놀이 활동이 몸짓에 관한 형상화 작업으로 발전되어 나갔다. 특히, 순천만에서 실제 일어난 흑두루미 두리의 이야기를 접목하여 몸짓을 통하여 두리의 입장에서 험난한 과정을 헤쳐나가게 된 구체적인 몸짓을 형상화 시키고 흑두루미의 동작에서 패턴의 인식하여 형상을 만들어 나가는 안무작업을 자연스럽게 하게 되었다. 이 글에서 ‘나’는 창작에 관한 구상, 스토리 전개, 음악, 안무 및 시연에 이르기까지 과정에서 경험한 내면의 상태를 토대로 창의성의 발현에 관한 지점을 탐구하고자 하였다. 자료 수집은 2014년 9월부터 2016년 5월 사이에 걸쳐 창작 과정에 관한 현장 노트, 성찰 메모, 사진, 동영상 및 자전적 기억 자료를 중심으로 이루어졌다. 연구자는 자료 분석과 해석 작업을 거쳐 창의적 사고에 뛰어난 인물들을 연구한 Root-Bernstein이 제시한 13개의 창의적인 측면(Root-Bernstein & Root-Bernstein, 1999)과 밀접한 관련성이 있음을 포착할 수 있었다. 나는 흑두루미에 대한 이해가 높아지면서 흑두루미의 몸짓에서 패턴을 추출하여 변형하거나 추상적인 이미지 작업으로 나아갔다. 이 자전적 사례는 순천만습지에서 흑두루미와 인간이 서로 조화스럽게 살아가는 공감각적 관점에서 다양한 방식의 앎과 느낌을 통합하는 방식으로 창작춤 활동을 전개해 나감으로써 자신을 심미적이고 영적으로 고양시키게해 줌을 보여주었다.

전통 문양을 채색분석 해 보는 자전적 경험 탐구

그림을 그리는 활동과 밑그림을 여러 가지 색깔로 칠해보는 채색활동은 내적인 감정, 생각, 느낌 등을 표현하게 해 준다. 이 연구의 목적은 연구자의 채색활동을 통해 문양에 담긴 의미와 조형적 특징을 탐구하는 자전적 경험을 이해하는데 있다. 연구자는 전통 그림과 문양에 대한 세미나에 참여하면서 채색분석 방법을 알게 되었으며 약 1년에 걸쳐 배운 경험을 토대로 채색 활동이 주는 심미적 경험을 살펴보고자 한다. 먼저 연구자는 투각향료에서 나타나는 조형 패턴에 대하여 NetLogo로 코딩해 보았으며 용면와(龍面瓦)와 고구려 안악 3호분의 연꽃 무늬를 채색분석해 보는 경험을 질적으로 해석하였다. 그 결과 연구자는 그 자체로 다양한 색감을 통해 형태를 꾸며나가는 활동이며 채색을 하는 과정을 통해 내적인 감정과 느낌이 순화되면서 사물을 보는 눈이 확장됨을 서서히 알아차리게 되었다. 이 연구 결과는 조형의 밑그림을 채색하면서 조형에 대하여 분석하는 활동이 조형에 담긴 의미를 해석하는데 도움을 주었으며 더 나아가 무늬가 전개되어 나가는 조형방식을 탐구하는데 체계적인 방법임을 확인할 수 있었다. The purpose of this study is to understand the aesthetic experiences of interpreting traditional patterns with color analysis. I (researcher) learned how to analyze coloring while participating in a seminar on Korean traditional patterns and would like to examine the autobiographical aesthetic experiences of coloring activities carried out for about one year. As part of the art-based research method, I collected and qualitatively analyzed the artifacts of color analysis and memorized data for the selected traditional patterns as well as NetLogo coding. The coloring work itself is an activity to decorate the form through various colors and the process of coloring, and has side effects of tuning the inner emotions and feelings purified. With such a method, I gradually noticed that the eyes to see things were becoming expanded and deepened. The results of this study confirmed that color analysis of traditional patterns helped to interpret the meanings contained in those patterns via re-interpretation from the a/r/tographic perspectives.

물의 마음으로 학생들을 대하는 어느 도덕 교사의 초상

이 연구의 목적은 중학교 도덕 교사의 삶 속에서 드러나는 행복과 힘듦에 대하여 개인의 생생한 목소리를 통하여 탐구함으로써 교사 개인에 대한 통합적 이해를 도모하는 것이다. 우리는 20년의 교직경력을 가진 중학교 도덕교사 한 명을 대상으로 2011년 10월부터 2012년 2월 사이에 심층 면담을 4회 실시하였으며 생생한 단락을 포착하여 의미를 정교하게 부각시키는 작업을 통해 초상 글쓰기를 진행하였다. 우리는 이러한 질적 사례를 통해 초임 시절의 행복했던 2년을 거쳐 20년의 세월이 흐르는 동안 학생들과의 관계에서 마음으로 다가가면서 진정으로 소통하고자 하는 도덕 교사의 주관적 경험 및 교직 생활에서 느끼는 충족감과 힘듦에 관한 총체적인 양상을 고찰하였다. 고등학교 때 만난 두분의 국어 선생님의 모습을 빼닮은 하늘샘은 학생들에게 가랑비에 옷이 젖듯이 한 방울의 물처럼 서서히 스며들어 그들이 변화하는데 도움이 되는 햇님같은 선생님이 되고자 노력하였다. 우리는 이 초상 사례에서 나타나는 고유하고 통합적인 모습을 통해 인간다움을 추구하면서 구도자의 길을 걷고 있는 도덕 교사의 행복과 힘듦의 본질적인 측면을 포착하고 이를 토대로 교사교육에 던지는 시사점을 제시하였다. The aim of this paper was to understand a middle school teacher`s life as a whole by focusing on the participant`s effort and inner struggles with which she wanted to be a better teacher for her students with the mind of water. A single moral-ethics teacher was selected and four in-depth interviews were arranged between Oct 2011 and Feb 2012. Several aspects such as motivation to become a teacher, her own ways of improving the relationships with her students, her inner struggles with which she tried to help them to live humanistically were explored and mapped into a timeline in order to grasp her major strands. We depicted her case by sympathetically following the first two years of her happy work with her students as a novice teacher, and her own ways of struggling with students with the mind of water since that time for about 20 years. Her overall picture was shaped by how she was both fulfilled and suffered as she began career. Having two Korean language teachers as role models when she met during her high school days, she wanted to become a sunshine-like teacher who helps the students to change gradually by not imposing her demands on them with the mind of water. We tried to see the essential aspects of her own feelings of happiness and sufferings as a teacher who walks in the path of a humanity-seeker depicted from this portrait and suggested implications of her case valuable to the teacher education in action.

질적 연구 방법으로서의 초상화법 소개와 특징 고찰

본 논문은 질적 연구 방법론으로 주목받고 있는 초상화법을 소개하고 자료 분석 방법과 초상글쓰기 방식에 따른 사례를 고찰함으로써 초상화법에 대한 학문적 이해를 돕고자 하였다. 초상화법은 연구자가 연구주제에 관하여 심층면담을 포함한 각종 자료를 연구자의 눈(통찰)을 통하여 해석한 결과를 마치 초상화를 그리듯이 묘사하여 제시하는 질적 연구 방법이다. Lawrence-Lightfoot의 초상화법은 문화기술지에서 출발하여 학교문화 또는 개인의 실재성(reality)에 대한 자료를 다양하게 수집하여 통합적인 해석을 통하여 연구 대상에 대한 초상을 그려 내는 방법을 제시하고 있다. 반면에 Witz와 동료들이 제시한 본질적 초상화법은 연구 참여자의 경험을 공감적 내성 원리에 따라 이해함으로써 연구 참여자의 고유한 측면(unity)을 묘사하는 인물 사례의 방식을 띠고 있다. 두 방법론을 비교 고찰한 결과 Witz와 동료들이 개발한 초상화법은 면담 자료에 대한 미시적 분석 방법의 사용, 시간흐름표 기반의 주요 흐름 포착, 그리고 생생한 인용구에 대하여 의미심장한 부분을 불러일으키도록 하는 주석 달기를 함으로써 연구자가 보고 느낀 바를 글쓰기 하는 특징과 이를 뒷받침하는 주요 원리를 보여주었다. This study provides gentle introduction of portraitures that caught much attention of qualitative researchers and reviews several cases according to qualitative data analysis and portrait writing method in order to help readers to understand portraiture methodology. The methodology projects major aspects of a participant regarding research theme in terms of painting a unified image of the participant. Lawrence-Lightfoot`s portraiture paints and presents the result of interpreting diverse data set of school culture or persons. On the other hand, Witz and his colleagues prefer trying to see the whole aspects of a person emerged in terms of a unity based on the principle of sympathetic introspection, which enables the researcher to write up the essence of the participant`s experiences in a portrait. By the comparison and contrast of the two approaches, the major principles of essentialist portraiture reveals the features of micro-analytic analysis with which the author points out the major strands of timeline data by evoking what a significant passage communicates, and provides ways of painting a picture to the reader of what the investigator “sees” and “feels” in the passage.

고고보드를 사용한 중등학생들의 로봇 창작품에 대한 질적 고찰

이 연구의 목적은 로봇 키트를 사용하여 창의적 활동을 전개하는 영재반 학생 및 고등학생들의 창작품을 질적으로 고찰하고 특징을 살펴봄으로써 예술 작품 또는 발명품으로의 확장 가능성을 탐색하는데 있다. 참여 학생들은 집중 캠프를 통해 고고보드 및 다양한 센서를 사용하면서 자신만의 아이디어로 창작품을 만드는 활동을 전개하였다. 연구자는 일반계 고등학교 학생들의 작품(2013년 2월)과 과학영재교육원에 다니는 중학생들의 작품(2015년 1월 및 7월)을 수집하였고 관련되는 사진및 동영상 자료를 보완적으로 사용하였다. 참여 학생들의 고고 창작품을 질적으로 분석한 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 여학생들은 그다지 복잡하지 않은 아이디어에 착안하여 작품의 유용성 및 디자인 측면에 중점을 둔 작품을 만드는 경향을 보여주었다. 그에 비하여 남학생들은 대부분 고고보드와 다양한 센서의 기능을 충분히 살려서 독창적인 작품을 디자인하면서 고고모니터 명령어로 제어 하는 활동에 적극적으로 참여하였다. 둘째, 영재반 남학생들은 고고범퍼카를 구동하는 프로젝트에서 얻은 아이디어를 변형하여 자신만의 작품을 조립, 제어, 테스트 및 수정하는 과정에서 집중력과 정해진 시간 안에 완성시키고자 하는 실행력을 보여주었다. 셋째, 참여 학생들의 작품 중에서 센서를 사용하여 상호작용적 움직임을 구현하는 작품들은 키네틱 아트로 확장될 수 있는 가능성을 보여주었다. This paper aims at exploring several aspects related with creative activities by qualitatively introspecting the creative works done by secondary school students including gifted students. The participating students attended intensive robot classes using GoGo board and other robotic tools including sensors and ended up with designing and creating their own robot artifacts. The author collected the participating students’robot outcomes done in Feb 2013, in Jan 2015 and July 2015 respectively including video data, and informal interview as for complementary data analysis. The qualitative review was depicted as followings. First, the female students seemed to prefer designing relatively simple and pretty interactive robot pieces based on their skills learned from the classes whereas the male students tended to fully utilize the functions of GoGo board and several sensors to integrate for their own creative inventions and engaged themselves into hardware constructing and programming. Second, some gifted students gained interesting insights from the GoGo bumper car project and applied them into their creative projects and accomplished their works by sustaining cycle of constructing, coding, testing and debugging in a limited time session. At the end, I compared the students’works with several relevant international cases in order to indicate the possible future direction such as kinetic arts, and suggested several implications for creative robot education.

영상매체를 경험한 유아의 자발적 그림 그리기 활동에 관한 질적 분석

본 연구의 목적은 유아가 TV 애니메이션 등 영상매체를 통하여 보고 경험한 것을 그림으로 표현하는 활동에 대하여 깊이 있게 탐구하는 것이다. 우리는 지우(연구대상유아)가 만 5세였을 무렵인 2013년 2월부터 2013년 8월까지 그렸던 약 30점의 그림들을 분석하였다. 그 외에 2015년에 2회에 걸쳐 진행한 지우엄마와의 면담 자료, 지우가만 8세였던 2016년 8월에 엄마와 지우를 대상으로 실시한 후속 면담 자료를 보완적으로 사용하였다. 수집한 자료들을 질적 분석한 결과 지우는 닌자고, 포켓몬스터 및 가면라이더 등의 영상매체를 보면서 자신이 외부 세계에 대하여 인상적으로 느낀 바에대하여 즉각적으로 그림을 그려서 표출하고자 하는 동적인 양상을 보여주었다. 그의그림들은 점진적으로 정교하게 발전되는 현상으로 나타났으며 그림에는 지우의 자신감이 강하게 느껴졌다. 또한 지우는 자신이 그린 그림을 매개로 부모 및 친구들과 소통하는 활동을 하였고 더 나아가 ‘선과 악’의 대결에 관한 모방에 머물지 않고 애니메이션 캐릭터의 이미지를 새롭게 변화시켜 스토리를 창의적으로 변환시키는 양상을 보여주었다. 본 연구는 유아의 그림에 대한 발달론적 고찰과 애니메이션 매체 경험과관련된 사회문화적 접근을 시도한 것 외에도 지우가 가진 고유한 통합적 측면에 대하여 탐구하였다는 특징을 보여준다. The purpose of this study is to deeply explore the major aspects of a child who engages in self-initiated drawings after watching TV animation etc. We analyzed about 30 drawings that Jiwoo, a five years old single participant, drew between 2013 February and August. We also conducted interviews twice with Jiwoo’s mom and another separate video data collection with Jiwoo in 2015; his mom together on and video data conducted with Jiwoo’s mom together in 2016. By qualitative data analysis, Jiwoo enjoyed watching Ninjago, Pocketmonster, Kamenrider etc and tended to directly digest outer world’s stimulus and actively expressed his own feelings after watching such diverse animations and movies etc. In his series of drawings, he tended to immerse himself into such media watching and showed his confidence on his ways of projecting his feelings and impressions into the drawings. He also revealed the patterns of expanding himself in several ways that he wanted to make up his own stories creatively in his drawings with his new invention of animation characters, not just imitating the combat between good and evil expressed in the media animation, and to share his own stories with his friends or/and mom. This paper presented that we tried to explore not only the salient features of his drawings and socio-cultural play activities, but to investigate Jiwoo’s whole aspects beyond such socio-cultural viewpoints.
