Enhanced Gene Expression by Fusion to Rice - ubiquitin in Yeast
(Young Mi Kim) 한국응용생명화학회 2000 Applied Biological Chemistry (Appl Biol Chem) Vol.43 No.1
Chloramphenicol acetyl CoA transferase (CAT) and angiotensin- converting enzyme inhibitory peptide (ACEI) were fused to C-terminal region of rice ubiquitin to examine the level of transcripts or enzyme activities in yeast. When two chimeric genes under an inducible Gall promoter control were transformed into Saccharomyces cerevisaie, both CAT and ACE inhibitory activities were enhanced by three to four-fold as compared to those containing no ubiquitin gene. However, the levels of transcripts of ubiquitin fused and unfused genes were not significantly different each other. Therefore, it was suggested that the expression of foreign genes was post-transcriptionally enhanced by fusion of plant ubiquitin in heterologous organisms such as yeast.
Food insecurity, Material Hardship, and Depression in Korea
( Youngmi Kim ),( Aely Park ) 한국보건사회연구원 2015 한국복지패널 학술대회 논문집 Vol.8 No.-
Public discussions have increased in Korea regarding the prevalence and consequences of food insecurity because it is considered an indicator of disparity in socioeconomic status as a result of structural barriers. More research is needed to uncover the consequences of food insecurity on mental health and to inform social welfare and health policy. We investigate the associations of food insecurity and material hardships with depression using data from the large-scale Korea Welfare Panel Study, which has drawn data from a nationally representative sample in Korea. Using responses from 744 household heads, we used regression analysis to estimate the associations between depression and food insecurity and material hardships. Our findings show that both food insecurity and material hardship are generally significant in predicting depression, after controlling for income and other factors. Implications for research and policy and suggestions for future studies are discussed.
Mimicry and free speech: A new approach to predicting ESL Learners` communicative competence
( Young Mi Kim ) 한국멀티미디어언어교육학회 2011 멀티미디어 언어교육 Vol.14 No.3
This paper explores the possibility of diagnosing ESL learners` communicative competence by introducing mimicry test as an alternative measure of assessing their overall language proficiency level, which could simplify the complicated procedures of speaking tests utilized in the ESL contexts and make it feasible. Rating results of mimicry test and free speech test were compared to explore the possibility of adopting the examination of mimicry ability as an aptitude test for oral proficiency assessment. In addition, difficulty levels of two different task types used in mimicry and free speech have been weighed through the test takers` self-assessment of their language proficiency. The spoken data analyzed in this article came from ESL classrooms at a major American university. Speech samples of participants were recorded onto computers using computer-based speaking test program, and they were rated by experienced native raters based on the holistic and analytic rating criteria. The results, by showing that ``holistic`` scores for free speech and ``analytic`` scores for mimicry were highly correlated, strongly advocated the viability of using mimicry as an alternative measure to assess the overall communicative language proficiency of L2 learners. Moreover, given the significant washback effect of introducing mimicry test into the ESL language classrooms, mimicry can be utilized as a means of obtaining the educational objective of teaching English to improve L2 learners` communicative competence.

This study examined the synthesis of the crystal structure of bis(2,2'-bipyridine)nitrato zinc (II) nitrate, [Zn(bipy)2(NO3)]+NO3‒ using a microwave treatment at 300 W and 60 Hz for the application to dye-sensitized solar cells. The simulated complex structure of the complex was optimized with the density functional theory calculations for the UV-vis spectrum of the ground state using Gaussian 03 at the B3LYP/LANL2DZ level. The structure of the acquired complex was expected a penta-coordination with four nitrogen atoms of bipyridine and the oxygen bond of the NO3‒ion. The reflectance UV-vis absorption spectra exhibited two absorptions (L-L transfers) that were assigned to the transfers from the ligand (σ, π) of NO3 to the ligand (σ*, π*) of pyridine at around 200 - 350 nm, and from the non-bonding orbital (n) of O in NO3 to the p-orbital of pyridine at around 450 - 550 nm, respectively. The photoelectric efficiency was approximately 0.397% in the dye-sensitized solar cells with the nanometer-sized TiO2 at an open-circuit voltage (Voc) of 0.39 V, a short-circuit current density (Jsc) of 1.79 mA/cm2, and an incident light intensity of 100 mW/cm2.

This study investigates beginning EFL teachers’ emotional labor from the perspective of the Activity Theory. Emotional labor is defined as the process of controlling one's emotions and emotional expressions in accordance with the occupational standards for proper emotional expression. Two beginning EFL teachers at Korean junior high schools were recruited by means of a qualitative research method. Semi-structured interviews were conducted and analyzed based on Activity Theory. The findings indicate that participants’ emotional labor in relation to their students was represented as conflicts in their activity system. Additionally, the resolution of the conflicts could be possible if a teacher can join a new teacher learning community and use new instruments. The results suggest that beginning EFL teachers should be encouraged to be empowered with new instruments such as classroom management skills and teaching practices for handling mixed-level students. These new instruments are expected to prevent students’ problem behavior and ease the burden of teachers experiencing emotional labor.
