      • rs12904 Polymorphism in the 3'UTR of EFNA1 is Associated with Colorectal Cancer Susceptibility in a Chinese Population

        Accumulated evidence has indicated that Ephrin A1 (EFNA1) is associated with angiogenesis and tumorigenesis in various types of malignancies, including colorectal cancer (CRC). In the current study, we performed an online search using the public microarray database to investigate whether EFNA1 expression might be altered in CRC tissues. We then conducted a case-control study including 306 subjects (102 cases and 204 well-matched controls) in Xiaoshan County to assess any association between genetic polymorphisms in EFNA1 and CRC susceptibility. Searches in the Oncomine expression profiling database revealed EFNA1 to be overexpressed in CRC tissue compared with adjacent normal tissue. The rs12904 G-A variant located in the 3' untranslated region (UTR) of EFNA1 was observed to be associated with CRC susceptibility. Compared with the AA homozygous genotype, those carrying GA genotype had a decreased risk of developing CRC (odds ratio (OR)=0.469, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.225-0.977, and P=0.043). The association was stronger among smokers and tea drinkers, however, no statistical evidence of interaction between rs12904 polymorphism and smoking or tea drinking on CRC risk was found. Our results suggest that EFNA1 is involved in colorectal tumorigenesis, and rs12904 A>G polymorphism in the 3' UTR of EFNA1 is associated with CRC susceptibility. Larger studies and further mechanistic investigations are warranted to confirm our findings.

        RNA sequencing reveals that Prx II gene knockout can down-regulate the allograft rejection of dermal mesenchymal stem cells

        In this study, we used RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) to analyze and compare bulk cell samples from wild-type (WT) dermal mesenchymal stem cells (DMSCs) (n = 3) and Prx II knockout DMSCs (n = 3). The purpose of the study was to elucidate the role of Prx II on allogeneic immune rejection of transplanted DMSCs. The results revealed differential expression of 472 genes (176 up-regulated and 296 down-regulated; p ≤ 0.05) between the PrxII+/+ (WT) and PrxII−/− sample groups. When highly regulated genes were categorized according to the Gene Ontology (GO) molecular function classification and the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway analysis, the PrxII−/− samples showed a robust downward trend in allograft rejection. The study identified 43 all immunologically rejected differentially expressed genes, of which 41 showed lower expression in the PrxII−/− vs. PrxII+/+ (WT) samples. These findings suggest that Prx II gene knockout may down-regulate the allograft rejection that occurs during DMSCs transplantation and improve the survival rate of DMSCs in the host. This study provides a new perspective on the clinical treatment of stem cell transplantation.

        Estimating Areal Production of Intertidal Microphytobenthos based on Spatio-Temporal Community Dynamics and Laboratory Measurements

        In situ Microphytobenthic community dynamics were combined with laboratory measurement of predominant species by fluorescence methods to estimate the areal primary production. Field investigation of community dynamics of microphytobenthos (MPB) was conducted from August 2006 to August 2007 in intertidal flats of the Nakdong River estuary, Korea. MPB Biomass varied between 0.47 and 16.58 μg cm−3 in the surface 1 cm sediment, with two dominant diatom species, Amphora coffeaeformis and Navicula sp., occupying average 77.2 ± 14.9% of total number of MPB cells. The biomass was higher in the slightly muddy sand sites than that in the sand site, and showed different pattern of seasonal variation. The profile of vertical distribution of biomass was an exponential decrease trend with depth in sediments. The biomass proportions in the uppermost 3 mm were 57.6% and 37.8% with and without the presence of biofilm, respectively. The two dominant species were cultured in laboratory, and their photosynthetic parameters, rETRmax (relative maximum electron transport rate), α (light utilization coefficient) and Ek (light saturation parameter) were derived from rETR (relative ETR)-irradiance curves by Imaging- PAM (pulse amplitude modulated) fluorometry. The rETR-irradiance curves showed no significant difference of photosynthetic activities between the two species. The areal potential production ranged from 0.74 to 2.22 g C m−2 d−1.       • A transmit diversity scheme for quantum communications

        <P>This paper proposes a quantum two-branch transmit diversity scheme based on quantum maximal-ratio receiver combining (QMRRC) with one sender and two receivers. Exploiting two senders and one receiver, this scheme provides the same diversity order as that of one sender and two receivers. It can be generalized for two senders and <I>M</I> receivers to distribute quantum information with diversity order 2<I>M</I> for <I>M</I>⩾2. It has the advantage that it does not require any bandwidth expansion and feedback from the receiver to the sender, and its computation complexity is similar to QMRRC. As a consequence, it may transmit quantum information with more efficiency than the previous quantum key distribution (QKD) schemes.</P>

        Constructions of quantum Bose–Chadhuri–Hocquenghem code using spectral techniques

        <P>A quantum Bose–Chadhuri–Hocquenghem (BCH) code is constructed over <I>F</I><SUP><I>n</I></SUP><SUB><I>p</I><SUP><I>m</I></SUP></SUB> in the spectrum domain by employing Fourier transform. The constructed code may be employed to describe the characters of the quantum code over <I>F</I><SUP><I>n</I></SUP><SUB><I>p</I></SUB> in the time domain. Each quantum state of the proposed code has certain specified consecutive spectral components equalling zeros, and the error-correcting ability of the code can hence be determined by the number of consecutive zeros in its parity spectrums. Moreover, the decoding process may be performed more efficiently by using the spectrum techniques rather than by using the traditional methods.</P>

        Secure deterministic communication scheme based on quantum remote state preparation

        <P>Based on the techniques of the quantum remote state preparation via a deterministic way, this paper proposes a quantum communication scheme to distribute the secret messages in two phases, i.e., the carrier state checking phase and the message state transmitting phase. In the first phase, the secret messages are encoded by the sender using a stabilizer quantum code and then transmitted to the receiver by implementing three CNOT gates. In the second phase, the communicators check the perfectness of the entanglement of the transmitted states. The messages can be distributed to the receiver even if some of the transmitted qubits are destroyed.</P>

        Effect of light and sediment grain size on the vertical migration of benthic diatoms

        Using chlorophyll fluorescence, the vertical migration of benthic diatoms responding to light intensity and affected by sediment grain size was studied. Minimal fluorescence (Fo) of surface sediment was measured by imaging pulse amplitude modulated (Imaging-PAM) fluorometer, and used to monitor diatom biomass variation in surface sediments. The test diatoms, Amphora coffeaeformis (C. Agardh) Kützing and Cylindrotheca closterium (Ehrenberg) Reimann & Lewin,migrated to the sediment surface under irradiance from 50 to 500 μmol photons m-2 s-1. However, the diatoms exhibited no evident increase of surface biomass under dark conditions, and even showed slightly decrease of surface biomass under irradiances over 1,000 μmol photons m-2 s-1. The light intensity inducing the maximum surface migration of A. coffeaeformis was 100 μmol photons m-2 s-1, while the light intensity producing the same effect for C. closterium was 250μmol photons m-2 s-1. C. closterium showed higher motility than A. coffeaeformis. Faster diatom surfacing was observed in larger grain size sediments (125-335 μm) than smaller ones (63-125 μm). This study confirmed the significant influence of light as a main triggering factor behind migration, indicated the distinct effect of different sediment grain size,and highlighted the species-specific migratory ability.

        Migratory Responses of Benthic Diatoms to Light and Temperature Monitored by Chlorophyll Fluorescence

        As an important adaptation for survival in the sediments of intertidal flats, benthic diatoms move up and down in response to a wide range of environmental stimuli. We investigated the vertical migration of two diatoms—Cylindrotheca closterium (Agradh) Kützing (B-25) and Nitzschia sp. (B-3)—under different combinations of light intensity and temperature conditions. An imaging pulse amplitude modulated (PAM) fluorometer was used to measure the minimum fluorescence (F0) in order to monitor variations in diatom biomass in surface sediments. Rapid light curves (RLCs) were applied to assess their photosynthetic activities. Both species had increased motility under higher temperatures, with the longer valved C. closterium being twice as fast as the shorter valved Nitzschia sp. The former was also influenced by exposure to light intensities of 100 or 250 μmol m−2 s−1, whereas the latter was not. Consequently, no light/temperature interaction effect was associated with the vertical migration of Nitzschia sp., perhaps because of its lower photosynthetic capacity and smaller cell size. Therefore, we conclude that motile benthic diatoms exhibit species-specific responses to light and temperature due to differences in their photosynthetic capability and morphological characteristics.

      • Effect of storage time and temperature on levels of phthalate metabolites and bisphenol A in urine

        Urine is a widely used matrix in biomonitoring studies on the assessment of human exposure to environmental chemicals such as phthalate esters and bisphenol A (BPA). In addition to the need to apply valid analytical techniques, assurance of specimen integrity during collection and storage is an important prerequisite for the presentation of accurate and precise analytical data. One of the common issues encountered in the analysis of non-persistent contaminants is whether shipping and storage temperature and time since collection have an effect on sample integrity. In this study, we investigated the stability of phthalate metabolites and BPA in spiked and unspiked urine samples stored at room temperature ($20^{\circ}C$) or at $-80^{\circ}C$ for up to 8 weeks. Concentrations of phthalate metabolites declined, on average, by 3% to 15%, depending on the compounds, and BPA declined by ~30% after 4 weeks of storage of spiked urine samples at $20^{\circ}C$. In a test of 30 unspiked urine samples stored at $20^{\circ}C$ and at $-80^{\circ}C$ for 8 weeks, the concentrations of phthalate metabolites and BPA decreased by up to 15% to 44%, depending on the compound and on the samples. It was found that the small reduction in phthalate concentrations observed in urine, varied depending on the samples. In a few urine samples, concentrations of phthalate metabolites and BPA did not decline even after storage at $20^{\circ}C$ for 8 weeks. We found a significant relationship between concentrations of target analytes in urine stored at $20^{\circ}C$ and at $-80^{\circ}C$ for 8 weeks. We estimated the half-lives of phthalate metabolites and BPA in urine stored at $20^{\circ}C$. The estimated half-life of monoethyl phthalate (mEP) and mono (2-ethyl-5-carboxyphentyl) phthalate (mECPP) in urine stored at $20^{\circ}C$ was over two years, of mono (2-ethyl-5-oxohexyl) phthalate (mEOHP) and monobenzyl phthalate (mBzP) was approximately one year, and of other phthalate metabolites was approximately 6 months. The estimated half-life of BPA in urine stored at $20^{\circ}C$ was approximately 3 months, which is much longer than that reported for aquatic ecosystems.
